I saw an ad for some Altec 604-8G speakers in my neck of the woods. Any idea if my MC225 could drive them? They're 15" coaxals. I've been thinking about looking for some vintage speakers. :scratch2:

At 1-2 watts you'll be backing away from the speakers :) The604's are some of the most sought after of the Altecs. dgwojo 08-05-2006, 09:18 AM I have a MAC1700 - 40watt/channel receiver hooked to my 604-8H's and G's and I can't take much past 9:30 on the volume, one has to remember that these produce about 100db at 1watt at 1 meter, that's efficiency for sure!! http://206.225.95.32/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1622 CarlV 08-05-2006, 09:18 AM That sure would be a great match. Go for it and good luck! Carl Number 9 08-05-2006, 09:54 AM The "G" s are the ones to have. Great speakers ... but need a hefty sized cabinet to accomodate them. If the price is right, a no brainer. MrZero63 08-05-2006, 10:21 AM Check it out: http://www.audioheritage.org/html/profiles/altec/duplex.htm :thmbsp: MrZero63 08-05-2006, 10:30 AM Just one quick question for whoever knows it - is that cardboard in the hole where I think a horn should be? I can't locate a good pic of the 604G for comparison... Sure looks to me like something is missing, though... :dunno: http://cgi.ebay.com/2-ALTEC-LANSING-STUDIO-MONITOR-LOUDSPEAKERS-604-8G_W0QQitemZ320013499305QQihZ011QQcategoryZ50597QQ ssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem radioactive 08-05-2006, 10:35 AM no nothings missing thats just a port if you look at my avatar i have the same type of port.the 604'g are a fullrange speaker thus no need for a horn. MrZero63 08-05-2006, 10:50 AM Kewl. From what little I've read on these gems, these are the ones to have. Might be in my future after I tire of the Heresies :scratch2: Billfort 08-05-2006, 10:57 AM I use Altec 604-8G's in cabinets with the same volume and tuning as the model 17. I have no experience with the MC225 but these Altecs work great with lower power tubes. I use 2A3 and 300B SET's with mine and anything over 3 watts drives them very nicely. radioactive 08-05-2006, 11:32 AM Kewl. From what little I've read on these gems, these are the ones to have. Might be in my future after I tire of the Heresies i tired of my heresy's after i gott my 19's really quick. www.records 08-05-2006, 11:47 AM I have identical Model 17's that I use with MC40's. He doesn't make mention in his ad about the working condition of these, so I would definately contact him and see that they are operating properly. When I bought mine, one of the voice coils was bad, which wasn't a big deal, but did cost close to $100 to replace. I think you would love'm. You don't see many of these. I look forward to your impression if you get these. dgwojo 08-05-2006, 11:48 AM The "G" s are the ones to have. Great speakers ... but need a hefty sized cabinet to accomodate them. If the price is right, a no brainer.Personally I like the H best as the Mantaray horn is better IMHO, the G's are very nice too, I have the C, E, G, H, and a broken down K, the H is the one I settled on but there too rare!! Yes, good sized cabs make all the difference in the bass extension!! :music: audiomaniac 08-05-2006, 02:00 PM Wow! Thanks for all of the feedback. I have been using some single driver speakers for near field listening and these caught my eye. I wonder if these would be over kill. I've never had Altecs or horn speakers and wonder how these would handle jazz and vocals. They could probably handle the rock side of the house. Are they super heavy? They look like book self speakers. Anyway, they will probably go to the moon! Number 9 08-05-2006, 04:19 PM ... and wonder how these would handle jazz and vocals. They could probably handle the rock side of the house. Are they super heavy? They look like book self speakers. Anyway, they will probably go to the moon! They are big and heavy. Just awesome speakers, great on Jazz. Just remember to update the crossover with caps ... they are way past their time by now. You won't be disappointed. Get them off the ground a bit ... Russellc 08-08-2006, 07:46 PM The MC 225 will drive the crap out of them and will sound excellent. My MC225 with Altec A7 will rock the house with no problem and plenty of throttle left. You can hardly go wrong with them whether they work or not. Replacing the high frequency diaphram or the low frequency cone also replaces the voice coil. contact great plains Audio for the best replacements. call, dont email. Russellc audiomaniac 08-09-2006, 06:43 PM They went too high for me. Someday maybe...... Billfort 08-09-2006, 06:53 PM I thought they might get up there but I can't think of any other speaker for $1400 I'd rather have. |
