At last!

After 6 years i scored a SM-6 in very near mint condition.

This time the price stayed resonable.
Before the item shoot over 700,- USD and that's too much!

When the unit arived i have gone through it inside and out and no prev. repairs were made.

Dc-offset values were 1 mV on both channels.

She looks great! Congratulations on getting her.
After you've had a chance to listen, tell us your thoughts on her.

Looks great, isn't anything though until you actually see those big meters bouncing in person. Wish my SM-7 had the little cover for the controls, I'll be combing ebay until hopefully someday I find one.

Gorgeous meters! I've always loved the looks of the Marantz Esotec line! :ntwrthy:

Yes!! - That amp has the classic AMP-look!!!! Congratutalions!!
We have a saying in Denmark (Maybe other countries too): "All good things comes to him who can wait". I benefitted from that a couple of times too. Tell us how it sounds compared to...say...older Marantzes like the 15..or 250M - please!

Here we go;

The big difference are the mid's and they sound a bit strange in my ears.

Little more forward compared to a 170DC.

Image is very wide and detailed but those mid's are weird.

You will hear it pretty soon Freddy

I think the pre SC-6 is realy great, but the SM-6 :scratch2:

I wil recap it soon

I have two Sm 6's. Love them. Have sc 6's, sc 9's, many ma 5's Still looking for a replacement for the the Sm 1000 I had. Recently these have been in the 3K range. Marantz Esotec, forever.

So, in your opinion the SM-6 sounds better then the SM-1000?!

Can you describe the differences??

I think it is after a full week slightly better sounding then the 170DC.

Bench tested at 2 x 150 Watt rms @ 8 Ohm's.

I am very happy with the SM-6!

Hi Guys, I too have just bought an SM-6 but it does come with a couple of ageing problems! It has been partially serviced and tested and the report says that it is getting hot and a clicking can be heard:worried:
I have no doubt that this can be sorted though:yes:
Hopefully I can get it looking and sounding as good as yours SB:music:
I was sooooooooo close to getting the SC-6 aswell but was outbid at the last second:mad::boxing::twak:
Not sure how long it will take to find one but I can live in hope.
Who was it said on here "Good things come to those who wait"??

These are some sweet Esotecs!

And I always stress patience, so it probably was a post of mine.

Bigredplane - You are going to be soooo happppppyyyy with that amp! I was tracking it on ebay (love those wood panels) and this one looks beautiful.

Now if only you could find an SC-6 to go with it...:scratch2:

02-02-2011, 02:12 PM
I was thinking about a Sc-6 to go with them but I'm not but sure. I like a tube preamp with a solid state amp. A person Can play around with the tubes to get the sound you like. There's a Sc-9 on Audiogon right now I was looking at just not sure. I have alway like the Esotec amps. I paid a top dollar for this one but I haven't never seen one this nice with the wood case before. This one was about as close to NIB I have ever seen. I offer him $700.00 but he said he had aleady turned down $700.0. You gotta love those Meters. To me this is one of best looking amps out there. I'm not a big fan of the black finish amps. Here's a ? I have. If was going to get this amp re-caps were should I go to get it done?

Thanks Scott

Always loved the styling gurus at Marantz. Sharp piece. Enjoy!!!

This is ture styling was important to Marantz. One of the things I like about the Sm-6 also is that is DC all the way through and caps altering the sound.

My main system is Esotec - love it to death. Would not trade it for the world. Yours has the seriously beautiful (and as often seen as a Yeti. Mine has the rack handles) wood - and I love it.

I would recommend a matching Esotec - simply because of all the preamps i tried with the SM-6 and the pile of MA-5 I have, the SC-6 sounded clearly superior. Better than the Mcintosh C-28, and even better than the SONY TA-E86 which is one of the best 5 preamps I ever heard. That SONY preamp is getting expensive as of late BTW. ( ( (

Have you had your Sm-6 recaped or anything? Or is still running factory original? Like I said I like tube preamps but it sounds like I need to pick-up a Sc-6 and give one a try. How the Sm-6 sound compaired to the Ma-5's ?

I never really gave the MA-5s and the SM-6 any true head to head comparason, so I can't really answer that.

Non have been recapped and people constantly tell me to recap as these are 30 years old. They tell me that "although it sounds great now, wait till you recap". I might be moving in a few months, so maybe I'll take the opportunity and overhaul the system.

As for the SC-6 sound: the best way I could describe it will be "carressing". It does not have the aggressive sound you may find in othe SS preamps of that period (such as the SONY), and yet nothing is lost. Very very pleasent and soft on your ears. A good SC-6 could get pricey though.

Does anyone know why some Sm-6 say Esotec Series Sm-6 on the front and some just have Sm-6 on the front and some have a black handle and some have a gold handle I see the Sc-6's are the same way :scratch2:

AFAIK, the black Esotecs are European. I also think that the wood panels were meant for the Japanese market, and some retrofitted on amps that were sold in other markets.

02-13-2012, 08:22 PM
Any difference between the earlier ESOTEC SM6 and the later just SM6 amps?
