ok, tired of my denon ht, want to use my sansui au-999 as the center unit, what exactly do i have to buy/do to convert it to ht?? can i use a receiver with the pre out main in to power the rears? what controls the center? i probably need a processor then?

please spell this out to me in very common english as i am old and brain challenged :)

thanx!

Star, you would use the pre out of your front L R from your Denon into the amp section of the 999 just like you stated. So you'll use your 999 as an amp just like any other external amp and not use the pre on it. You'll still need a pre amp that will do DD and DTS decoding so your Denon will fill that need nicely. Give it a shot and let us know what you think. I have a Denon 3805 and I'm always thinking about adding an external amp for the fronts.

Several manufacturers made surround sound processors containing the decoder and an amplifier for the rear/center channels. For a while I ran one from Kenwood in the tape loop of my Sansui AU-555. It worked, but the output from the rears was somewhat thin.

I had it set up as follows. I connected the audio output from the video monitor to the AUX input on the 555 so I could select from DVD/LD/VCR via the remote control. The Kenwood processor was connected to the tape in/out on the 555. For surround set the tape monitor to playback and turn on the processor. For stereo leave the processor off and set the tape monitor to source.

The setup would be a bit different with a newer processor with digital inputs.

I picked up a Marantz processor last week, but I've yet to check it out. It's an older model that only supports up to Dolby Prologic (not 2). I'll get around to playing with it sometime. If it's noticably better than the Kenwood it may stay in the system, but for the most part I am satisified with regular stereo.

I have seen a simliar Marantz unit that was newer and had support for Prologic 2 and Dolby Digital.

thanx! When you said "center unit",it is my assumption is that you're referring to the front left and right, not "center channel".Is this correct? How many speakers are you using? If you have 5 (l,r,c,ls,rs) and a sub,you would most likely want the left and right front speakers running from your Sansui. Is this what you're intending to do?If so,hook up the pre-out RCA connections from your Denon and connect that to the main in on your Sansui. This is basically using the Sansui as an external amp.The other 3 channels is powered by the Denon. One of the downsides to this configuration is the sound characteristics in the front 3 channels (assuming you have a center channel). They most likely won't match.
