View Full Version : Question on Dvd/Surround Sound hookup via Optical and Analog
Hi, right now my home theater set up is configure this way: Onkyo m 501 power amp, Yamaha E 492 surround processor, Mitubushi Dvd player and a Technics ACH 500 ;Dolby Digital and DTS processor.
I'm using my optical cable output from my Dvd player into the Technics for decoding Dolby Digital and DTS.
Would there be advantage in getting a different dvd player with 5.1 analog output that I could directly connect to the input on my Yamaha Processor ?
Thanks

Only if you are certain that the DAC in the new DVD player will be better than the DAC in your current combination.
In my case, the DAC in my $1200 amp is superior to the DAC in my $50 DVD player, so I just run a single digital coaxial cable from the DVD player to the amp and let the amp do the converting.
I guess the only real way to determine what's better in your case would be to do an A/B comparison.
Hope this helps :)

If you were to get a SACD, DVD-A or universal player you could play the high resolution formats which you can not do now. The high resolution formats can not be output through the optical or coaxial outputs. They can only be output through the analog 5.1 outputs on the DVD player.
