Here are the rules, you can name one album (CD, LP, SACD) that you would like to have with you on a desert island.

Only One!

Name the guilty pleasure, if you want.

Boxed sets, need not apply. If it is a 2CD/LP/SACD set, ok.

And ignore the lack of electricity/stereo/CDP/MP3/iPod! It is the TV series LOST, there is a stereo, and mistery power, You get the idea!

BUT ONLY ONE!

So let's start: Fleetwood Mac, Fleetwood Mac.

Hi Grainger,

If I were to be left all alone on a desert island, any form of music would be heaven. I would probably fabricate a rudimentary guitar out of coconut shells, strips of bamboo, guava wood and vines.

If this happens and I get to choose then I will select a double LP which has a combination of composition from Bach, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Rachmaninoff and Chopin.

There would not be a TT and power so I may have to call Fred Flintstone and trouble him for a schematic of his tortoise table. I bet I can build one on a desert island :-)

Thank you :-)

Any double record set would be fine. As was mentioned, the lack of electricity would be a major drawback. And I would probably not have the professor from Gilligan's Island to build me a victrola, or anything else, for that matter. A two record set, therefore, would present some interesting possibilities. :scratch2: Assuming I could make a fire, I would heat up a round rock, and melt the records on it. I would then plug the spindle holes, making a bowl for water, and even a hat! The possiblities are not endless, but limited only by what little imagination I might have left.

I actually was on an island (although neither desert nor deserted) for much longer than I intended (5 weeks instead of 2), and although I had about 32 CD's with me (that's how much my case holds, hence the specificity, though there may have been a double-disc slimline case in there or two), there was one I listened to far more than any other:

Tear Garden, Last Man to Fly

It even got to the point where I programmed my portable CD player to play it backwards, trackwise (I.E. last track first, second-to-last track second, etc. first track last).

Tough one. Since I can take a two record set with me, I guess I would take Sinatra's A Man and his Music. Since most of his albums were theme oriented, it would be hard to pick just one that covers his many sides as well as this one in a two disc format.

Any one album from Celine Dion. Preferably one at her caterwalling best or the album with that Titanic theme song. What was it? Oh yes, "My Heart Will Go On". :yuck:

If I had to be alone on a desert island I'd want to go quick and listening to anything from Ms. Dion would greatly improve those chances.

Yes... great thread... great to see some lp's I wore out like Close to the Edge and Selling England by the Pound!! And I just got that Coltrane- Blue Train today from yourmusic.com and haven't listened to it yet... but for me it would be the Pat Metheny Group's first CD... with Phase Dance, Jaco...etc..and it's on ECM. Also probably the reason I like '70's Yamaha amps. I would have to have my amp (headphones :music: would do fine if I can't take the Polk's).... with me on that desert island.

I gott'a admit, I have never heard of it. What genre?

Mink DeVille was one of the first wave of bands to come out of CBGB's along with The Ramones, Blondie, Richard Hell etc.. but were definitely not a punk band or even new wave. They are very hard to put into a genre because their influences were R&B, the blues and latin music, I would categorize them as a NY band with a lot of street savvy and soul. The first 3 records are definitely classic street soul. I'm 50 years old and I was born in NY's Lower East Side and the sounds on this record is what I grew up hearing all around me. definitely something to check out. :music:
As far as the album this is from the All Music Guide: "Energetic, no-holds-barred, smoking rock with R&B roots."

The Jimi Hendrix Experience-"Electric Ladyland" (European version with the naked ladies of course). Desert island:)

Its amazing that not THAT long ago you couldnt even market a rock LP with art like, low key nudity on the cover in the U.S., in most cases. Now it seems like REAL vulgarity is our trademark. I'm not saying that I am a big censorship person but I do think that when things are a little more well hidden that they are more fun if taken in by an adult(s) in their own privacy. The way it should be. Not being pumped into the brains of our children. Just an opinion....

Now that you mention it I have heard about Jimi not liking the cover. I didnt realize that he didn't know about it.

Also I always thought that the (two bag) look of the women was almost intentional. Some would say that it was just the period. Not true. I have seen some stunning women on 60's-70's "Hits" album covers or other lame stuff. The women were the perfect sales gimmick for the worst album format. IMHO

Or anywhere else for that matter.....Trade that one for Jimi Hendrix "Blues" or anything for that matter...Just giving you a ribbing man. Glad you liked Ladyland and you are right Hendrix is "The Man".

"Blues" is one of the many recordings released after Jimi's death. It is simply a collection of some of his Blues performances. Jimi was always a Blues man at heart anyway. No matter how "Far Out" things got the Blues as a foundation was never far away. When he was alive he released Jimi Hendrix music. Not blues albums or any other genre. He was very progressive as far as the evolution of his sound. Especially in the studio. But in small rooms, smokey night clubs, and many times on stage it was Blues (loud).

You can play Jimi's music. Whatever you want to call it. I play a lot of his songs. Imitation is one thing. Invention is another. I guess the point I had was that Jimi had a whole different soundscape playing (sometimes frustrating him) in his mind. The studio was the closest thing that there was to even remotely come close to what he had in mind. Back in those days the studio was causing some bands to refrain from playing a lot of material live because it couldnt be duplicated on stage. The Beatles are again another example. As Hendrix's studio capabilities progressed he found it harder and harder to introduce new material into the live performance. He disliked being stuck with the limitations of his "Are You Experienced" hits. Also he was pressured by the Black Panthers to be "blacker" as he was attracting a largely white audience. To the Panthers he was a sell out. The K.K.K. also troubled him for having two "white boys" playing behind a black frontman. No wonder he got messed up...

Its like trying to conceive the vastness of space when considering what Jimi may have done if he had lived. Then again maybe he was meant to come and go so quickly. Frankly its mind boggling that he had the impact that he had, and still has today on music in four years, and with five or so albums.....

AS for whipped cream, saw it in a thrift store today, but it was troweled, so I picked up Herb Alpert's "South of the Border," instead. Also got a TEN-ALBUM Tchaikovsky set that I'm almost certain has never been played. But I'm not bringing it either. Since it's a desert island, I'll bring "all things must pass" by Geo. Harrison. Philosophy, jams, virtuosic playing, great vocals, wonderful writing. Still the best thing ever done by a former Beatle. Except, "Someone's that knockin at the door, Somebody's Ringin' a Bell. Do me a favor, open the door, and let 'em in" by McCartney.

Tough choices here. I've found out that I can leave a Grateful Dead cassette in the car and play it over and over and over w/o getting tired of it, so I'll go with "Workingman's Dead" as my choice.

Van Morrison, "His Band and Street Choir" would be a close second.:thmbsp:
