I am totally sold on the above German label put out by Manfred Eicher. The recording quality, the presentation and total marketing are superb. I have about 400 titles 35% on vinyl. I often buy blind, I have never been dissaponted and furthermore get this, I am not a jazz fan, I don't own any "jazz" albums

ECM has got some fine fine releases. Buying blind will seemingly still be a choice score with ECM :music:

All of Dave Holland's stuff prior to his recent album is quite good. Dave Holland goes back quite a ways with ECM.

I have to agree that there are many excellent ECM recordings and one could probably not go wrong buying these at random, though I'm sure I would find some of the recordings a bit challenging. Three I have recently listened to are these.

Pat Metheny—Group S/T

Steve Tibbetts—Safe Journey

Ralph Towner—Blue Sun

Many great recordings on this label. Recent used bin finds:

Marc Johnson, Shades of Jade
Steve Kuhn, Remembering Tomorrow
Terje Rypdal, Vossabrygg
Paul Motian, Garden of Eden
John Abercrombie, Class Trip

I posted a some info on ECM a little over a month ago and didn't get very many responses. Some titles are quite expensive, and hard to find without spending $20 or more on a single disc. The early German pressings on CD are always interesting finds.

i always thought the label was based in norway, but no matter.i agree with eunomians that even a blind purchase will be worth it.the sound quality is always superb and the musicianship first rate.manfred eicher was, i believe a deutch gramophon engineer specializing in chamber music which dovetails nicely with the type of music found on ecm.it is truly an amazing legacy.picking a favorite is not an easy task but i will for now go with the survivors suite, keith jarrett, dewey redman, charlie haden and paul motian, ecm 1075.i also found that if you start exploring, one artist will open doors to a host of others.thank you mr eicher for 25 years of listening enjoyment

Yes. I discovered a host of musicians through ECM. I met Dewey Redman a few years back. I believe he has since past away. Check him out on Pat Metheny's "80/81". Also check him out with Old And New Dreams. They only put out 3 albums. Most of the albums mentioned so far are recent. I like many of the obscure releases from the late 70's, early 80's. Not that earlier, or latter releases are bad. The Marc Johnson, "Shades Of Jade" is my favorite newer release that I have heard. Tomasz Stanko "Suspended Night". Liked that one very much as well. How about Steve Tibbetts "Northern Song". Very different from his other releases.

Miroslav Vitous "Journey's End". Bill Connors "Swimming With a Hole In My Body". Eberhard Weber "Following Morning". Steve Tibbetts "Northern Song". Jan Garberek, Charlie Haden, Egberto Gismonti "Folk Songs". The Steve Tibbetts release is very different than his other releases. Very laid back. Garbarek would sound better to me if he did not spend so much time trying to pierce ones ear drums. He spoils many ECM releases with his constant high note playing. I do like him on the above mentioned disc, as well as "Solstice". The Hilliard Ensemble is not really my cup of tea. I like Norma Winstone very much. Always liked Eberhard Weber's "Fluid Rustle" which she is on.

Paul Giger, Violin. Alpstein, and Schattenwelt. Wonderfully different. Alpstein is the more accessible of the two. I think Schattenwelt is an exceptional solo effort. It would not be on everybody's list though. Schattenwelt means "Shadow World". It is based on the Labyrinth, and the Minotaur.
Alpstein is loosely based on an Alpine Village Theme. Jan Garbarek, and Pierre Favre play with Giger on this release.

If you do a Google Search you will find their German Site. It's pretty complete if I recall. Many titles were never released in the U.S.. I have a copy of Miroslav Vitous's "Journey's End". AMG listed it as not being released in the U.S., but this particular copy is a made in U.S.A. version. Try to find Eberhard Weber's "Yellow Fields". You can find it only on the Amazon U.K. site. Not the U.S. Amazon Site. Caiman.com is a Florida based seller that sells oddly many releases on Amazon U.K., but not Amazon U.S.. I have bought several hard to find releases from them through the Amazon U.K.. Confused? I am? :headscrat . Of course Germany is closer to G.B., than the U.S.. And Caiman probably has a European Distributor. Right? Every package I have received is shipped from Florida. :saywhat: :saywhat:

Anouar Brahem "Thimar" (Trio/ John Surman and Dave Holland) Kind of a spacey middle east sound to it. Brahem plays the oud.

Anouar Brahem Trio "Astrakan Cafe" is another good one, this one with Barbaros Ekros in clarinet and Lassad Hosni on bendir and darbouka (whatever those instruments are...)

I was not trying to be rude about Thimar. It just did very little for me. I found Journey's End in a used bin 6 years ago for $8. ECM U.S.A. Version. I did not realize until sometime latter that it was a somewhat rare disc. It does have one small hole punch, but for $8? I continously check Amazon for the best price, on the same discs. I picked up a Reissued, German Version of Eberhard Weber's "Colors Of Chloe" with shipping for $8.40. Some tab crimps on the booklet, but overall, excellent!
Keep checking ebay as well. I picked up Kenny Wheeler's "Double, Double You" for $11 and change, with shipping, a year and a half ago. Best of luck, Mark.

No worries at all. I always appreciate honest opinions and it obviously was nothing personal to me. My exclamatory tone was more to indicate I was glad to get a good tip on new music, but I guess I can see how you might have taken it differently- that's one problem with communicating via email and online.

Sounds like you pick up music in the same opportunistic fashion as I do. I have many cutouts, used discs, music club stuff, etc. As long as they have the liner notes and are in reasonably good shape, I'm happy. A happy camper.

amazon.usa has one used copy of "Journey's End" right now for $60! :yikes:

I like LLoyd's early stuff. I like "The Call" that he released in the early 90's. I have not been drawn in by much after that. "Sangam" maybe a good release.
As for Ralph Towner, start with his 70's releases, and work from there. A mid 90's release that I picked up recently that I like by Towner is "Lost And Found". The Alex Cline release, "The Lamp And The Star" is great. Almost other worldly with some eerie droan like vocals. The listening level changes throughout the disc, so turn out the lights, and lay back. "Nothing ever was, anway. Music of Annette Peacock" was another that I found cheap that I like very much. I have allready posted these, and this wonderfully odd release, "Journal October" by David Darling. Completely weird. Excellent!

Thanks to Sluggo for pointing out this thread - many great albums for me to follow up on.

Below are what's on my current "high rotation" from ECM. Some of these like "Matchbook" and "Crystal Silence" have been on that list pretty often for over 30 years.

Sadly with ECM (as with jam and wine) I often buy by the cover art - luckily with a company like this, even using this hit-and-miss method, you can't go wrong. Just love the cover art.

Thanks for reminding me that I ordered this. I've been really busy lately and sometimes forget what all I've ordered. I never received it, and they did not notify me or Amazon, so I didn't get a refund until I followed up.

Amazon z-Shops seller GoHastings SUCKS. They list items that are also for sale in their brick and mortar stores and are often sold and not available. Their prices are good, but they are an unreliable seller.

On a more positive note, I've been on a bit of binge lately with John Abercrombie, and now have several great discs by this very creative and talented guitarist- "Tactics" (live), "While We're Young", "Open Land", "Cat & Mouse".

I have dealt with them several times and not had one problem. What I have noticed is they have got wise to the fact that ECM is not some cheesy label. They were listing titles dirt cheap for a while, and I picked up several for under $6 shipped. Now they are selling them for the same price everybody else is.

PJ summer- Dolmen music. I own it and love it. Wonder how many people like this artist. Caught her at some club on lower Broadway in NY quite awhile back. I think the 70's were ECM's most fertile period.

Dawn- Double Image. A beauty.

I scored about 30 ECM releases a few months back at a Thrift shop 3 blocks from my house, but never stop there because they never have records...
My fav though is Keith Jarrett, The Kohln Concert.

Ralph Towner Batik

This one was a hard to find import until recently when it was reissued as part of ECM's "Touchstone" mid-price digipack series. Can now be had for ~$10 or so.

Highly recommended, one of Towner's best...

I never saw this (old) thread Kenneth . . . I love ECM!!

My first ECM recording holds a special place in my heart.
Timeless ~ John Abercrombie (1974)
with Jan Hammer, Jack DeJohnette & Dave Holland

I had it in my 70' Dodge Dart Swinger in 1974 on (don't laugh) 8 track and played it on my Craig with Pioneer Speakers sounded great. I saw Jack DeJohnette's Directions with Abercrombie at the Amazing Grace in Evanston, IL and they played the album in it's intirety the same year . . . . A great Venue and a Fantastic Show :thmbsp:

The back up group was a virtually unknown band called Shadowfax.

Anytime I find an old ECM recording on vinyl it never fails to inspire me, Cheers, CB
