In walks Barry about 12:30 pm at a small but good mexican food restaurant on S. Palm Canyon Dr. One of the guys at our table noticed him first and I recognized him right away.

Barry didn't look too good - I'd guess from his face that he'd passed 65 some time ago. He didn't perform for us and no one really paid much attention to him.

This was the most exciting thing that's happend to me the entire month. :sigh:

Barry has been around the block a few times and has come a long way. I work in the entertainment business and have worked his show a couple of times. When he first came through our area he was a total paranoid. Stagehands were told to never look directly at him and he had a tent tunnel built from his dressing room to the edge of the stage so that no one could see him.

The second time he came to my theater and he was personable and there was no tent or instructions to not glance at him. I don't like his music but I have
to admit that he put on a very nice show. He worked his audience like a gentleman and was very well received.

I read somewhere that he was going in for hip replacement surgery sometime soon, or maybe already has. My father-in-law had it done too and it really beat the hell out of him.
I see a lot of ol' Barry's vinyl in the thrift stores- I didn't know he did so many albums in the 80's! When I was a kid back in the 70's I thought he was pretty cool-almost as cool as that John Denver fella. I mean, he was on TV and everything!! Then I turned 10 and discovered the Stones. Still, I almost feel guilty for passing up those later albums, having worn out two earlier ones in my pre-adolescence on Dad's old BSR.
And yeah, I still have them. Just haven't played them since 1978.

Well, I was pretty disappointed when I found out he didn't write "I Write the Songs." I felt cheated. :D

Funny, I was just talking to a pal who had recently done a film shoot with Manilow.

Apparently, Barry loves Velcro. He was going on & on about how he's "a Velcro kinda guy". He then ripped off his shirt that had buttons but was not buttoned, it was Velcroed instead. He also mentioned how he's got Velcro on everything in his house.

Barry also was a little self-conscious about the amount of make-up he was wearing for the film shoot. He said that is was a pain in the ass to take off all the makeup; he wished that makeup was more like Velcro... You could just rip it off.

Anyhow, Mr. Manilow was a real congenial and funny fellow said my buddy.

Cheers

I met him at a concert in the 70s and he was a very nice guy and a true showman although his music made me want to puke. He does have a big following however amongst women.

I often wonder what these guys are really like when they're NOT being "Barry Manilow, big-shot entertainer"...You wonder if they have anyone they can "let their hair down" with, kinda like we do here at AK... Or Royalty...I often felt kinda sorry for Prince Charles....Always "on", all the time. If the poor guy farts in public, its headlines. He can't go to a mall & loaf, can't go kick tires & pull some car salesman's chain, can't go antiquin', & look for audio bargains. Not a life I'd particularly wanna lead...

I'd bet someone here is actually Barry, or Pat Boone, or Dee Snider, living the regular guy's life vicariously thru AK. The internet has could create a whole new market for celebs-"Virtual Walking Down the Street", or "Virtual
Garage Sales", or "Getting in Touch With Your Inner Anonymity". There's my million-dollar idea for the week. It's documented here, I want a cut of the sales!
I'll bet one of you guys is Elvis.

It's rumoured that Dolly Parton "slums it" at times at Dollywood. She doesn't have her wig on, wears a big floppy sweatshirt, & big sunglasses, & you'd never know it's Dolly. Her family is sorta like the Mafia in Pigeon Forge-they are VERY powerful, & nothing gets done there that they don't have a say-so in. Nothing bad or sinister, it's just they are silent partners in lots of stuff there. But Dolly has paid for quite a few college educations for poor kids from there, too-on top of providing books to underprivaleged kids.
