That's terrible news. Sorry to hear it. Maynard was amazing. :drunk: :drunk: :drunk: :beerchug: SDA SRS 1.2 08-24-2006, 02:53 PM Sorry to hear of his passing. He sure could play that trumpet. Always loved his updated version of "Maria" on his "New Vintage" CD. Clmrt 08-24-2006, 02:54 PM All those albums at GW should now double in value. slow_jazz 08-24-2006, 03:32 PM rest in peace mannard..... great music for a lot of years..... luvvinvinyl 08-24-2006, 03:36 PM RIP, Maynard. Pyrotechnician with a horn. I had the great pleasure of seeing Maynard Ferguson and Buddy Rich on stage, together, in London, Ontario, in 1976. The stage could scarcely contain two such monumental egos. But the music... I never heard anything like it, before or since. KeninDC 08-24-2006, 03:44 PM He will always be in "Living Stereo." Toasted Almond 08-24-2006, 04:58 PM R.I.P. Maynard, and thanks for the good ones like The Theme from Shaft, Birdland, and a couple others. You got lucky Ernie, seeing those two on the same stage. I've heard the two bands referred to as cars. Maynard's band was like a big Cadillac going down the highway, and Buddy's band was a Maserati on the same stretch of road. rocdad 08-24-2006, 05:18 PM I just heard the news on the radio. I think I will spin my Half-Speed Mastered copy of Conquistador. luvvinvinyl 08-24-2006, 05:48 PM TA, it was December 1976, and the finale was Maynard and Buddy 'cutting heads'. Each one trying to outdo the other with solos. Usually cutting heads is between two musicians on similar instruments. This duel went on for over 40 minutes, neither one giving an inch, nor gaining one. When they finally stopped, both started laughing, and actually hugged each other, and stood on the stage side-by-side, for their bows. Even the band gave them a standing O, screaming and whistling. What a night. I'll never forget it, though it was almost 30 years ago. ARRAY 08-24-2006, 06:06 PM Maynard, harps now accompany your horn. Chaps, volume controls set to half mast in his honour. MitsuMan 08-24-2006, 10:17 PM He will always be in "Living Stereo." :beerchug: Was he touring with Rush then? :scratch2: http://maynard.ferguson.net/images/albums/conq2.jpg He had a great connection with St. Louis. He's being remembered by my peeps thanks to Steve Shankman and Contemporary Productions :thmbsp: http://www.maynardferguson.com/ Parky50 08-24-2006, 11:53 PM I also had the pleasure of seeing Maynard in the 80's. What an astonishing musician, he will be missed by all. Rest in peace Maynard... Rest in peace... tcdriver 08-25-2006, 01:04 AM Sad news. In his memory, I am playing his album "these cats can swing!" Maynard Ferguson & Big Bop Nouveau on Concord CJ-669-C. rocdad 08-25-2006, 11:19 AM It's good to hear the conversations about Maynard's influence in the music world. Our local (Dallas, TX) talk radio station had a little tribute to him this morning. The News guy, who was obviously a HS Band guy, talked about Maynard's commitment to music education. He mentioned that many of his concerts in the 70's and 80's were in High Schools. My first exposure to Maynard's music, was when I was about fourteen (1978). We had a young guy renting a room from us for the summer. He had a nice Pioneer set-up, with some Bose 901's. One night my Dad and he decided to have an audio shoot-out. The guy brought his gear down to the family room. My Dad had his Sylvania Quad system down there. They played all kinds of music that night, Maynard's was what I remember though. It was a great night, which planted the audio seed in my heart. Dan Drybasement 08-25-2006, 01:20 PM RIP Maynard Your memory will live on through the music you have made. |
