When I was a kid I knew a guy who loved that album so much he bought the CD before he even had a CD player! He sold stereo gear at JC Penny and listened to it while he was working.

Take care,

Boston was a good fun band...Tom Scholz is an electronics genius and a hellova guitar player who invented a whole new sound for mainstream rock. His 'Rockman' amp is a pretty cool piece of gear.

I would partially agree with your premise in as much as Boston's unforgetable debut album was an all time classic, and all those that followed were not even close. But I would not say that the others were terrible, simply inferior to their Debut album, and also rather forgetable.

Hmmm... I also like Dont Look Back better, not knocking the first one though, or third stage.

Nope, I'll take the debut or Third Stage. Didn't care for Don't Look Back.

I like it as much as the debut. Nothing wrong with it in my eyes. It is a great album.

I had better like 3rd Stage....LOL! I remember the long wait for it to be released. Every year, there would be a rumor they were releasing a 3rd album and it never happened. It was frustrating. :)

Too bad they couldn't release that in 1980 or close to that. I think the 8 year gap killed alot of their momentum.

At least there was that Orion The Hunter release in '84. I really like that group's effort and have it on CD now. I like it better than any Boston release after Third Stage.

There is also the RTZ release that I really like. That and the effort by Orion The Hunter were more Boston to me than Boston was after Third Stage. I don't own any Boston after Third Stage.

boston

middling mass market pop rock that inundated the airwaves. If you can pick up a copy for free they might be worth it but certainly not anything I'd pay money for - first, second or third album

Agreed, if you don't like it, just say so. Snide-assed remarks are not called for.

Myself, I like Third Stage the best. It just builds from the first note to the last. I bought it as soon as I saw it had come out. From the first spin it has been in my favorites pile ever since. Great for showing off a system. As for the first 2, I've just heard them too much. though I still give them the occasional spin for old times sake.

I like their S/T album the best. I remember vividly making out in the back of my buddies 77' Trans Am with a cheerleader named Robin to "Let Me Take You Home Tonight."

I thought Don't Look Back was a decent follow-up to a monster first album, but I don't care for Third Stage at all. I think they tried too hard to repeat the success of the first album and it sounded contrived to me. :smoke:

no i'll still stick with my opinion that it's middling mass market pap. Though it is something I picked up for free and something I won't delete and maybe once every year or so it comes up in rotation. If one only wants opinions that mirror yours why post at all? So, in effect yours' are the snide rude comments

Yeah, guys, come on, chill. Boston may have been a tad juvenile, but they sold a blue jillion albums at a time when there was little else. Disco was raising its ugly head about that time, if you remember, & those of us who DESPISED "Pissco" didn't have too much new to listen to.

Yeah, well, him, too...Altho he never was as vomit-inducing as John Revolta....And Revolta has somewhat redeemed himself in my eyes by being the proud daddy at one time of a Lockheed Constellation...

Well hey, I like Boston, maybe you can send me all your Boston stuff for free, and if you see any more Boston stuff for free in the future, maybe you can send that to me too. So, if you need my address, send me a PM. :smoke:

It is not so much what you said, which I am in partial agreement with. It is how you said it. We try and keep things civil as possible. Calling music that others enjoy, middling mass market pop is not exactly being diplomatic. So next time, just admit you listen occasionally and we won't hold it against you.

Back on subject, I really like Boston's debut great album. I agree that the next two releases are good, but in a passable sequel sort of way. I still listen to them but without the emotional response of the first.

Just my $.02.

no i'll still stick with my opinion that it's middling mass market pap.If rock & roll is about having fun and cranking it up, Boston re-wrote the book.

Certainly they don't appeal to everyone (what band or type of music does?), but I'll give credit where credit is due.

Boston's problem was they couldn't capture lighning in a jug twice. Their other albums were pretty good, it's just virtually nothing could have stood up to the debut album.

I'd vote for Dont Look Back as my fave of the 1st three. I bought the LP's used over the course of the last few years, and probably had to ante up about a buck for them all total. When I'm sitting around doing something mindless, I usually put some Boston on the platter!

I like Boston. I never thought that they were "juvinile" or whatnot. Of course that may have to do with being 37. Admittedly I thought Kiss was cool at one time. There were a lot of people my age who had older brothers or sisters who thought that nearly anything new in music had to suck. Disco was everywhere when Boston's first album came out so it is very understandable that some folks became closed minded. Plus having just learned to live with the whole "glitter" rock thing in 1973-75 must have been musically traumatic to say the least. Kiss was everywhere as the second mass marketing of a rock band. The other being the Beatles.

Boston was more or less straight up, good old axe grinding, good time, rock and roll band, and still are. They had sense enough to only have limited exposure and not be constantly monitored by critics and the general public. They always kept their audience waiting for the next release. Great marketing if nothing else. I bet that first albums sales are comparable to many Beatles albums.

I saw Boston a couple of years ago and they were great! Its a crying shame that the rock world (or lack thereof) has been reduced to great bands playing for chump change in clubs and other small venues. I mean, I paid like ten lousy bucks to see a very talented, great band. Good for me I guess. Not that I'm ungratefull. At least I wasnt paying $100 to see the Stones or Pink Floyd. I think it all boils down at times to a love of the music. I want to believe that Tom Scholz and the boys are rich enough from giving us years of listening pleasure to be able to kind of give the music away now. Maybe they like Rock and Roll enough to WANT to play for the masses if we will at least pay for their gasoline.

Its like seeing Arlo Guthrie play. You really know that the guy is there because most of the time that is where he wants to be. Singing and playing.

Today I feel like those older sisters and brothers I mentioned earlier must have felt about all the gay rock and disco. I think a lot of people like what is now referred to as "classic" rock because now we live in a plastic, generic, age and it shows well on FM radio and POP music. You almost have to go back in time to find interesting stuff I think. Yeah, I know there are good artists out there now but THEY DON'T GET AIRPLAY! You likely will never get word of their existance. Now this is the opinion of someone who doe's not explore music on the computer, mainly due to being on dial-up.
