As to worth, i'm not sure. I love mine. I have em hooked up to a Pioneer SX-850 in the bedroom. Definately keepers in my book.

Yup I love mine too. Mine are currently hooked up to a Sansui AU-D11 along with some L-620s. A little bass heavy and power hungry, pretty good mids to highs. Easy wonderful listening. I have some specs Duffinator sent me that I'll post later.

Cheers

It is a very impressive speaker. In fact, I would count it as my favorite in my 8" 2 way collection.

I'm currently running a pair of those in my den system off a small Sony amp. Love em! I got mine at the SA for $5 a year or so ago. Both fuses were blown, so the previous owner probabally thought they were dead. : )

Lucky you. ADS is my favorite. On my pair of GW $15 L780/2's, the crossover had become separated from the speaker posts. Easy fix and they sound fabulous.

I've got the L570s, actually the L570/IIs. Are yours series 1 or series 2?

Either one, the L570s, or the L570/II will typically sell within the range of $50 to $75 dollars, but recently a pair went for around $150-175, if I recall.

The L570 is a great speaker. I use them alongside some 3-way L630 ADS speakers.

Good stuff!

By the way, go here for specs...

Hey thedelihaus,

Is there appreciable difference in sound between the two way and three way ADS speakers?

Thanks,
Carl

If anybody has scans of the specs for these and other ADS bookshelf speakers from the mid 80's I'd love to get my hands on them.

Carl,

There is indeed an improvement of sound, a difference, a three-way ADS offering a smoother speaker with an improved midrange and improved overall coherence.
The 3-way's midrange really brings the speaker line up a level that's noticeable but not dramatic as some may think. In all honesty, as good as the ADS midrange is, an ADS speaker, whether a two way or a three way design, is going to sound like an ADs speaker, which means it's going to be delightful and magical.

If you want a three-way ADS speaker, read on-

In my opinion, it's more complicated than just going out and getting just any 3-way ADS if you want the full effect of that midrange. All ADS 3-ways are great, but some are a bit better.

Here's the thing with the midranges- and othere have agreed with me on this here at AK- they come configured a few different ways, a few different sizes, and therefore effect the overall sound. My L630s are very close to the setup of the L730s, and very similar to the Braun L830s. These,if I'm correct, feature a smaller sized ADS midrange driver than the 710s and 810s, and possibly the 880s.
This L630-spec midrange is a good one, but the larger one found in the others I've mentioned are better sounding, really finishing the speaker to a more polished jem.
Now, after owning both a 2-way and 3-way design, I can say I'm happy to have both, and don't think I'd sell either of them.
I can also say if I didn't have a 3-way, I'd surely want one, but I wouldn't lose a second's sleep over it not having 'em.

Also, when it comes down to finally getting a 3-way ADS, I'd never turn my back on an L630 or L730, but I'd probably lean towards an L710 or L810, or L880.

But just slightly.

Slightly.

Oh, and if you have the power to run them and the money to spend, hold out and go for the bigger boys- 1290s, 1590s, the like.

Bi-ampable, beveled side edge, beautiful finish, and much desired.

A recent big pair of hefty high-number ADS in great shape went up for sale for real cheap money, L810 pricing, within the last 10 days. Around your neck of the woods. :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:

TDH, the later 3 way models you mention and own have 1 1/2" mid domes while the older and or larger speakers have the 2" dome. Some also have 3/4" tweets while others have 1". My 1975 vintage L710's have a 1" tweet and a 2" mid while my 1980 vintage metal grill L810's have a 3/4" tweet and a 2" mid. Both of mine sound similar with the difference being in the bass. The 810's have dual 8" drivers and the 710's have dual 7" drivers. The cabinet volume is much greater on the 810's as well. OP, the 810's are similar sized to your 620's and 710's are similar to your 570's.

thedelihaus,

Thanks for your insight. it helps greatly. I have the L-570 and L-620s both 2 ways. And I really like them. A lot of people including Duffinator have really help me with the ADS speakers. I actually passed on another AKers offer on some 1590s. I think that was the model. Just to big. I like the 1290s and I hear a lot of great things about the L-710 and L-810s. ReEdger has a couple so I'll have to make the leap soon.

Thanks!

Duff,

Is there a x-over change that may be affecting the sound then? Or do you think it's the size of the tweeter perhaps?

As it's mids (and maybe highs) that the 710s and 810s and 880s are claimed to be sweeter at, I wouldn't think it is cabinet size, though I will readily admit that the 3-way L630s I have are a huge bass improvement over my L570IIs. The L630s are much larger than the L570IIs.

OP, I think those speakers were the L1530's, have the size of a VW bug! The 1590 are the taller, more comtemporary looking speakers.

TDH, while I'm not sure of any crossover differences they are different between the 2 and 3 way, obviously. Additionally I'm sure they made changes between the models and if I'm not mistaken I think someone mentioned that the difference between the 570 I and 570 II was the crossover which improved the sound in the II model.

I've never heard the L570s, but I talked with the guy out of Manhatten that claimed to be the owner of the biggest collection of ADS (remember the massive picture of a bunch of different models floating around here and on Craigslist a few back?).

He said he owned both, and kept the L570IIs as they were an upgrade over the originals. Said they were his favorite of the smaller L570s.

Needless to say, I love any and all ADS speakers- they are all a-okay in my book!

Supposedly "bookshelf" speakers, but the tight sharp bass and stereo imaging off these two-way speakers is unbelievably amazing. :thmbsp:

I win for "oldest thread resurrection" because I just bought a pair of these off CL for $40. Minty, well almost. Very nice units.
