View Full Version : Played Hooky Today

I have a swell job, but I did not go in today. Instead, I played AK hooky and did the following:

1) Fixed the DC offset on my Marantz 2238. It was 14 mV left and 195 mV right. Now, I am at 0 mV on both since the Marantz has handy little adjustable thingies, clearly labelled in the service manual. This would not have been possible w/o Echowars and his "DC Offset and You" thread and his specific advice re: Fluke DMMs. The Marantz is now singing and has tight bass once again.

2) Used Caig Faderlube on the "Mode" switch of my Yamaha CR 1020 to eliminate the occassional left channel dropout. While I had the unit out, I did a little more deoxiting, faderlubing, and gold lubing, depending upon the nature of the switch. Faderlube was suggested by Echowars and doggone if it did not do the trick. I have Buck Owens on right now and he's got a tiger by the tail.

While I had the unit out, I checked DC offset and it was 7 mV right and 14 mV left. I'm leaving that be.

3) I test drove my new Sansui AS-100 speakers through my Yamaha CR 640 system in the basement. Folks, if you run across the Sansui AS series ('71 - '72), they are worth checking out. I paid $15.68 w/ tax this Saturday when my thrift was having a 50 percent off everything sale. I knew nothing about them, but they were beautiful wood veneer w/o the typical lattice work on the grill of that era, so I decided to take a flyer. I used orange oil to clean/shine the cabinets, deoxited the tone adjustor, and they are a freaking great acoustic suspension speaker. Frankly, I was blown away by the detail, warmth, and sound stage. At 40 watts peak (conservative), they are mighty efficient and are perfect for the CR 640. Lyle Lovett and the Cowboy Junkies were a revelation, and Van Halen on good 'ol free FM was amazing. I was not missing the B&Ws upstairs.

In fact, I have disconnected my KLH 5s from my downstairs listening pad and will soon decide whether the KLH 5s will remain in my collection. I have a line on some EPI 150s, so something's got to go.

Well, I'm off to open up and clean my old Panasonic transistor radio that my dad gave to me when he returned from Vietnam oh so may years ago. Then, I'm gonna play cowboys with my son and daughter when they get home from the pool.

If you get a chance, play hooky...
