View Full Version : Marantz switch replacement tips?

Hi Gang,

The power switch on my 2230 is stuck in the on position. I've been using the plug to turn it on and off for a couple of weeks. I ordered a new switch on e bay. It arrived today.

So, I'm going to tear into her and try to replace this thing. I need to pick up some desoldering braid before I start. Does anyone have any tips on this? Is it difficult to get at? My soldering skills are just fine and I don't have any trouble getting into gear to clean the pots and such. I figure this is only slightly higher on the difficulty scale than that.

Thanks,

Ed

Tips? Besides unplugging the unit? :D

If there's a saftey cap on the stock switch, it should be replaced. If the new switch is a dual-sided one, parallel the two sides to double the current capability.

Beyond that, it's just a matter of doing a neat job.

Thanks EW. I have it apart and the soldering iron is heating up. Intrestingly, the new switch has a different spacing on the mounting screws. Even more interestingly, the 2230 has several different pairs of holes for the screws, and rotating the switch 90 degrees lines them up with the new switch.

Hopefully I'll be posting shortly about my repaired Marantz!

Thanks,

Ed

I'm happy to report that my beaten but beloved 2230 is fixed! The job went pretty smoothly! That's the first time I've ever used desoldering braid. I have to say I was actually a little bit surprised how well it really works. I was able to get the wires out of the old switch in tact, quite a feat given that they span two terminals each.

The only "difficulty", and I hessitate to call it that, is the new switch sticks the button out slightly further than the old one. Given the cosmetic condition of my poor thrift store Marantz, this isn't a big problem.

Take care,

Ed

EASY FIX!
Pop the aluminum cap off and cut the square shaft down a tad. :thmbsp:

Yeah, I thought the same thing. Next time I have it apart for something I'll remember to do that. This guy sells these switches on e bay for a pretty reasonable price. I'm sure you could figure out what it is and find it cheaper, but I figure his information is worth a few bucks. It sure worked out well. I've seen the question asked here several times, so I assume these switches fail quite a bit. I'm happy with this solution.

Take care,

Ed

They do fail quite often, in fact, my 2265b I restored, I made a 3 prong quick plug for the switch, so I can solder outside the reciever.
Next time I will use quick spade slides on the switch itself for immediate transplant..lol
You dont have to take it apart for the operation though!
pull the aluminum cap off with a pair of pliars that have rubber on the grabby end and gently pull the cap off, and commense to cut off one section of it with a pair of wire cutters.
Glad to see you got your marantz back up though. I love mine and know it is hard when you know your baby has an illness..

Ed, Too bad you couldn't find a switch from Computer Builders Warehouse, they sell those switches for $3, it'd be nice to know if that low cost option would fit the 2230, it's a very heavy duty switch, Dave. :scratch2:

Hold onto the metal bracket from the old switch. You'll need it to match the holes to the chassis if you need to replace the switch again.
