there's a pair of early cornwalls at a flea market near me. they have the old logo on the grilles. how do these grilles come off? the $400 asking price seems reasonable but if the foam is bad i'm going to try to work that number down. any other caveats for me?

of course this purchase will only open a can of worms. then i'll have to find a td 124 and god only knows what kind of tube power to slake my lust.

No foam! Just make sure all the drivers work and the obvious stuff, but if they're half-way decent, the guy's priced them right it seems.

Some of the grills were NOT removable. Be sure your examples are removable style before attempting to remove them! It's also a good idea to open the backs (just takes a screwdriver) to make sure all Klipsch drivers are in there.

do you know the serial numbers??? are they Cornwalls or Cornwall IIs??? Cornwalls you can remove the grills (velcro although I have seen lately people running screws through them...)...no foam to rot...the crossovers might need updating (BECtoo and others or yourself if you're talented)...$400 is about half price for a nice pair so go stel 'em!...if not, tell me so I can!...;)

For $400 bucks at a local flea market, I would ask the guy if I could remove the back panels and inspect the drivers. If he says no, then walk away......

I agree it's good to be cautious, but as stated above by Bill, $400 is just about half price for a nice pair of Cornwalls. They can go for $500 (rough) to $1200 (mint), to $3500 (new).

I'd leave work early if I didn't already have a pair.

When you say old logo, do mean the "V"-shaped one in the upper right corner? Pre 1975. Or do you mean a clear piece of plexi with "KLIPSCH" engraved on it near the bottom?

Good luck. If they are intact $400 is a great price.

If you tell us the serial number, we can tell you what year they were made.
Mine are 1974's; date code "M" in the serial number. Pie-wedge logos. Not bad sounding with an EICO HF-81. Magical with a Marantz 8B.

If you get them (or listen to them), they'll probably need new capacitors in the crossovers (you won't believe how easy working on these is). BECtoo here can set you up with good replacements close to the originals.

Pretty good Latin skills.

I figured it was a reference to the Rolling Stones Song "Sympathy for the Devil"

Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails
Just call me Lucifer
Cause I'm in need of some restraint
So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I'll lay your soul to waste...
