ok, when we are moved into the new place i will be hooking up our h/t system..what i am planning on is to use the yamaha ca 2010 to power the fronts...a yamaha dsp-e492 to power the rears and center...a dvd player with dts and dolby digital decoder built in...sound ok?
with this setup, will i have any problem with the balance btwn front/rear/center since the 2010 has alot more power then the 492?
now, what would i need to do to just play the stereo side of things with a cd in the dvd player? dont necessarily want all 5 speakers playing, just the "old school" sound of the fronts doing their thing :)
thanx!

Is the yamaha ca 2010 just an amp? If so, you should be able to just leave everything the way it is. On the yamaha dsp, you'll just make sure it's on 2 channel. If the ca 2010 is an integrated, you could use just that but you would have to disconnect the interconnects from preamp to amp, and replace the jumpers in the 2010. It's easier just to leave it as preamp and amp unless you like the ca 2010 to do all the work.

another question, if the dvd player has dts and dolby built in then can i use the 2010 for the fronts and my au-999 for the rears and center? or would it better to stick with the 492?

Just plug it into the 492. What's the au-999? From what i gather. Do you mean use the 2010 as the amp for the fronts and the au-999 as the amp for the rears and center? With that configuration, you are using the 492 as the preamp so you will plug the dvd player into that. I was assuming the au-999 is an amp. With theater, you will have to have all 3 units on plus the dvd player. With two channel, you'll just need the 492 and 2010 on. I hope this helps.

umm, what i meant was instead of using the 492 get a dvd player that takes care of the decoding and use the 999(amp) for rears and center and the 2010(amp) for the fronts....

Sorry, but you didn't mention the 999 at first, and i didn't realize that's what the 492 is. What are you using as the preamp? That's what i am confused about now.

right now i'm not using anything as this is a proposed set up in the new place...if i go with the 492 then it is the preamp for all and the amp for the rears and center with the 2010 powering the fronts...which leads to the next scenario of using the 999 for rears/center...2010 for fronts and supposedly a dvd player that decodes the 5.1 sound built in..and thats where the question comes in...CAN i use one of those dvd players in place of the 492 for the decode process and sub the 999 for the power?

Ok, does the 492 have digital inputs? It doesn't have a built in dvd player does it. The dvd player has to connect to the 492, but if the 492 doesn't have DD or dts built in, then you will not get dd or dts. You need a receiver or something that decodes dts or dd, with a dvd player hooked up to it, then you use that as the preamp for all the channels. You can't just use a dvd player with those two amps, i don't think that's what you meant but it sounded like it. You could plug a dvd player into one of the amps with interconnects, then use say the 2010 as the preamp for the rears and center and amp for fronts, and the 999 as the amp for the rears and center. Plugging the dvd player with interconnects will not give you dd or dts. If you use a dvd player instead of the 492, how will that work. Nothing will be able to process dts or dd. I hope this clears things up.

how about this then...yamaha 2010 integrated amp for the fronts, sansui au-999 intergrated amp for rears and center, then just a plain processor with dts and dolby decoding to be used as the preamp?

yes, that should work, then you plug the dvd player into that preamp

If you have a DVD player that decodes both DD and DTS and has 5.1 analog multichannel outs then you DO NOT need a preamp. Just connect your amps to the 5.1 multi out on the DVD player, the dvd player will take care of all the decoding. Im 99% sure this will work.

you mean multi out as in for like sacd or as in with a receiver built in with a dvd player

yes if the dvd player has multichannel outputs you should be able to connect those outputs to the inputs of the amps. Since the dvd player will handle the decoding a processor isnt needed. Like I said I am 99% sure this will work, I dont see why not.
