I bought a Samsung 46" DLP a few weeks back and could not be happier. It is the HL-S4666W shown here:

Samsung HL-S4666W (http://samsung.com/Products/TV/DLPTV/HLS4666WXXAA.asp)

The picture is bright & clear, the set is small (for a 46" screen / 13" deep tapering to 2" along the top), and the price was right. I paid $1299.00 which included delivery. I bought it off Amazon. It is new and not refurbished. I just checked the price on it and it has dropped another $100 to $1199!

Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000F2P31E/sr=8-1/qid=1158416879/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-2103106-0220806?ie=UTF8&s=electronics)

You have to click on the Amazon link to put it in your cart to see it. I am not sure how they can offer it at this price, but it is ~$400 less than at Best Buy right now on sale. This is a 720P vs. 1080P HD set. FWIW, everything I read says the 50" & larger is where you want 1080P. Below that you will not notice the difference. Regardless, it blows away my first generation 16x9 set, a Toshiba TW40F80.

Some further thoughts, 2 friends bought Samsung DLP sets a couple years ago. After hearing how much they loved them, as well as from numerous industry friends that this is what they'd buy, I bit the bullet. The set is quiet unlike the tube projector Toshiba I had. I could always hear a HV squeal. Also, with DLP I never have to adjust convergence again. Plasma puts out way too much heat not too mention their spotty reliability. LCD was my second choice but I ended up liking the way DLP renders skin tones. It just lookes more natural to my eye. I am happy.

Sammy HL-S5086 here. I got mine a couple of months ago and it's great. I looked at the prices at Amazon too but ended up getting mine from Onecall although the price at Amazon was less. That's a heck of a deal on the 46".

I had a Sammy HD960 dvd player connected to the hdmi input and it's a decent player although changing settings is a little cumbersome. I just got a Denon 1930ci player and am using it now. Picture is about the same.

I have a Denon 3910 HDMI player hooked up replacing a Pioneer DV-525. I have not tweaked the color settings yet and just got a hold of the ISF disc. When I get a couple hours I will do that.

I was torn between a 42" & (I think) the 50" you have. The 50" was just too big for the room it is going in. BB/CC were not carrying the 46" when I was out shopping (some of the do now) & I found out about the HL-S4666W on Samsung's website and it listed it as the latest generation DLP. I was glad I looked as I would have bought the 42" otherwise.

Don't know what is up w/ Samsung's price? You could make the case on dumping it is so low. A couple months before I got mine, another friend spent $1300 on a 37" Westinghouse HD LCD at COSTCO. It is a great set but he was a little ripped at the deal on the Samsung.

I have the Avia disk and the Video Essentials disk, about 10 years old. Of these, I think the Avia disk is better for color and black level. There's a lot of info at avsforum abut this but you have to wade through literally hundereds of posts to find anything of value. Great dvd player, the 3910.

I think the 4666 is basically the same machine as the 5086. The only other ones that I considered were the Sony 50" A10 and the 50" XBR. I really wanted the XBR but it was about $1K more, the green blob issue and the speakers on the side kept me away.

Please don't forget to check the prices at buy.com through the banner here on AK for your newer electronic items. It takes some getting used to remember but Last i checked they kick 5% back of your total purchase price to Audiokarma. Thats an awesome donation to this site and you get what you were shopping for :) Thanks
