Here's some that sound great on my system, would be unbelievable with your setup:

DVD-Video: Pink Floyd Pulse, Shine on you Crazy Diamond
Cream, Live at Albert Hall 2005, Stormy Monday (try the 2-channel mix, you may see God)
DVD-Audio: Yes Fragile, anything
Led Zeppelin How the West Was Won, Stairway to Heaven
SACD: Pink Floyd DSOTM, best surround mix I've heard

Don't know if this suits your musical taste at all, but us 50-yr old hippies love it.....

Most of my best demo tracks are LPs but here are some DVD-A for you:

The Ray Brown Trio- Soular Energy from Hi-Res Music DVD-A
The Alan Parsons Project-I Robot from Classic Records HDAD DVD-A
Diana Krall-Love Scenes from Impulse! DVD-A

I guess I have to also mention Patricia Barber-Cafa Blue since that is the CD that started me on my upgrade path a few years ago and has cost me untold thousands of dollars.

for SACD the Jim Hall record Concierto is simply amazing, esp Concierto De Aranjuez (sp?) (much better than the Miles Davis version)

i know it's not SACD but all of the Jerry Garcia Band albums remastered in HD sound really great and have a lot of air/space between the instruments to let you really focus on tonal characteristics; esp check "When the Hunter Gets Captured by the Game" on Compliments of Garcia

any jazz on ECM esp recent Dave Holland stuff--music doesn't get recorded better than that

OK better stop or I'll leave my desk and start listening instead of working...

Not exactly SACD or DVD-A but the three reference CD's that helped me a lot during my quest :

A Perfect Circle : Thirteenth Step
....on the first track...you should hear a wide and deep soundstage with singular positioning of the percussion...low and very articulate bass...as the song progresses...you should hear the bass-player applying a distortion pedal on the bass, but very subtle ... the ProAc Response D100/MC501 is the only combination I auditioned on which I could hear it in all its glory. The very first time I heard this track with the MC501 (and at that time B&W Nautilus 802), I just could not believe it...and once I got the D100...pure bliss.

A band of Brothers : Soundtrack
...the second and third track are outstanding orchestral recordings...the second track begins quitely and builds up until I can push the amps to 500 Watt...no distortion, no compression...just effortless and glorious.

Yo Yo Ma : The Cello Suites
I suspect the tracks are mastered without limiter or compression...great CD's to appreciate what 500 Watt can do for you...the closest thing to 3D sound on a two-channel system.

Would love to know how these tracks sound on Masterlu's system :scratch2:

Hi Masterlu,

Try the following:

DVD - Eagles Hell Freezes Over - Track 1: Hotel California (starting drums & bass).
XRCD - Camomile extra (Emi Fujita) - Track 1: Fields Of Gold (vocals to die for).
Burmester Test CD 03 - Track 9: Hugh Masekela Stimela (simply fantastic).
Lee Ritenour CD - Overtime - Track 7: Papa Was A Rollin' Stone (play it loud).

There is a XRCD by FIM - Treasures of Asia. Go try it. Slowly builds up your interest.

Your system will be able to wring the last drop of performance from the above superb tracks.

Reference Recordings of Chicago Pro Musica. Track 10 is my favorite, "Capriccio Espangnol". Highly energetic and quite a whallop at the end.

Chesky Records: John Pizzarelli, "One Night With You". I play old-school, jazz standards and this is one of the best, sonically. An all-star cast of musicians and typical Chesky recording quality. Most notable for the fine guitar picking and those violin solos.

Cheers,

David

How about the RCA Living Stereo SACDs? Many have outstanding sound and great performances. I am particularily fond of the Ravel Rapsodie Espagnolie with Munch and the Saint Saens Organ Symphony. Try the opening of the second movement on the Organ Symphony, where the organ comes in at a low level to provide a foundation for the orchestra.

While not SACDs, some of the JVC XRCDs are very good. I particularily like Bill Evans Sunday at the Village Vanguard for both music and the sound of a live club.

Finally, the DCC issue of Sinatra '57 offers very good sound from a live 1957 concert (with Nelson Riddle along on the tour!). If you are demoing the system for a Sinatra fan, you'll have to play the entire disc. The Cole Porter numbers are magical.

I'll also second the eariler recommendation of the Allison Krauss SACD.

DVD-A/SACD:
The Crystal Method - Legion of Boom (Weapons of Mass Distortion)
The Blue Man Group
Frank Zappa - Quadiophiliac (Chunga's Basement)
Grateful Dead - American Beauty (Ripple)
Queen - A Night at the Opera (Bohemian Rahpsody)
The Who - Tommy (Sparks)

CD:

Pink Floyd - The Wall (the whole thing, Run, Run, Run for bass demo)
Frank Zappa/Ensemble Modern - The Yellow Shark (G-Spot Tornado)
Whitney Houston - The Bodyguard (I Will Always Love You -ultimate female vocal)

There's lot's more, I have to think about it a bit.

Be careful here with the Norah Jones I thought it was a straight transcription from the 16 bit secondary master not the original master so may find very little difference.

Masterlu, if you want to really show off your well setup system, get yourself a Roger Water's "Amused to death" CD. It's a 2 channel CD but in a well setup system that images properly, the voices and other effects that were done with phase tricks on that CD will appear right next to you on the couch, behind you, all over the room completely detached from the speakers and well off to the sides and even the ceiling. It really freaks people out when they hear it on the a well setup system the first time. It only works when the speakers are positioned spot on though. Sounds like your system should be capable of generating some goosebumps with that 2 channel CD.

Ivan, don't use any mind altering substances while listening to that CD ;)

Victor, Q-Sound has been around since 1988, they basically came up with very powerful algorithms to produce 3D sound through what I imagine are very precise imbedded phase alterations. You can even buy software from them these days that will allow you to create your own 3D sound effects, music tracks, etc.... There are some cool demos on their website that you can listen to even with computer speakers. This technology does not work with headphones. http://www.qsound.com/2002/demos/main1.asp You can burn the "tour of London" mp3 to a CD and use that as a demo track, very impressive indeed!

12 man acappella singing group superbly recorded DDD in 1987. With your system you can close your eyes and swear there is a chorus in your room. This is an album of old gospel songs that will give you shivers. Not a SACD, but listen and tell me I'm crazy.

Everyone needs a MONO album to demo.

Get Ella and Louis (the first or 2nd album). Recorded so well in Mono, that through a good stereo system people are amazed its mono. When I sometime tell people this was stuff recorded back in 1956 they have a hard time believing it.

I had a hunch you'd call me out on this! Recommending Frank to people I don't know is like telling a stranger to try raw oysters or better yet, fried chicken feet - even though I happen to love them both there is a good possibility that they may not. I love the sound quality of Thing Fish but the lyrics are a NO GO for 95 percent of the population. You Are What You Is sounds very good and would most likely be the one I would recommned since it has only 5 songs that directly mention bodily functions! Guitar is safe to recommend but you don't get the full benefit of FZ's song writing skill. Besides, FZ people are generally "not normal" and Masterlu seems like a perfectly normal guy that just happens to have 10,000 pounds of McIntosh gear in his system and another 2,500 pounds in the box, unopened, sitting in a storage unit!

Humbug! This is a community of psycho music lovers, a perfect target for spreading the gospel of Frank! Let's start with your own avatar, The Grand Wazoo is an instrumental masterpiece! However, Thing-Fish is even too much for me. Here are my favorite FZ albums:

Clean:

The Grand Wazoo
Sleep Dirt
Hot Rats (Peaches in Regalia)
Shut Up 'n Play Your Guitar (Ship Ahoy)
Jazz From Hell (G-Spot Tornado)
The Yellow Shark

Possibly Offensive:

Joe's Garage (the album that got me in to FZ)
Lather (awesome)
Make a Jazz Noise Here (Black Napkins)
Them or Us
Apostrophe
Lumpy Gravy (very bizarre)
Freak Out (FZ's revolutionary debut)

Most of these were extremely well recorded, even though some go back over 40 years. Some of the music is very amusing, others include some of the most incredible performances you could imagine. Much of it is not easily appreciated, but is well worth it if you acquire the taste. Enjoy!

I went to a Grateful Dead concert on Thanksgiving day 1975 (74?) in Denver. We snuck away from high school, hitchhiked the 200 miles to Denver.

The Dead had their famous "Wall of Sound," which was the state of the art for concert sound systems.

It was an absolutely unbelievable sound. There were a total of 641 JBL speakers, all run by 26,400 Watts of McIntosh Blue Meter power. (technical description http://dozin.com/wallofsound/ )

We of course had the worst seats in the Denver Coliseum, but the sound was just incredible. Listening to Garcia belt out "Sugaree" in the blue glow of those McIntosh amps. . . . .

Possibly due to some strange chemical interaction, I have always had a sweet spot for McIntosh ever since.

Note the similarity of the "Wall of Sound" to the XRT2K?

I have really enjoyed reading this tread. In fact I have gone online and ordered several of items recommended.
However ,I have been surprised by the number of defected items I have received .I ordered 5 items from different sources and three items where defective
DVD-Video: Pink Floyd Pulse which is a 2 DVD set disc one did not play disc two did.Sacd copy of Jim Hall's Concierto ,only plays two channels
and sacd copy of Miles Davis's Bitch Brew only plays two channel .I check my player against other multi channel disc I already had they work fine .
I'm on a string of bad luck or is there a lot of bad product out there

Jimmy,

Thanks for sharing this. The state of disc quality is at an all time low in my opinion.
