View Full Version : Just won a CR-1020 on that auction site. Have I made a mistake?

I've been watching it since it was listed. Description seemed reasonable, photos could have been better. Only thing that slightly concerned me was the fact that he ran a guitar through a mixer through the amp, but I don't think this would be much of a cause for concern, right? Nothing stood out to tell my instincts to steer clear, so at that price I couldn't help myself. I'm just surprised that I was the only bidder. The last one on eBayUK sold for three times that amount. Am I missing something? Have I made a mistake by buying this? :scratch2:

EDIT: Ooops, sorry, should have posted it in Dollars&Sense. Feel free to move it, Mods.

Well, ToTo...it LOOKS like it's coming from a good home and at the price I'd say that with a clean-up you could have a good bargain. I think with some DeoxIT and careful checking of the Idling Current and DC Offset you might be in business.

My fingers are crossed for you...I'm sure if there is something wrong within...it SHOULD be fairly easy to fix on your side of the Ponds.

Cheers!

Hi Richard, for £50 + £25 postage it looks like a really good deal. As far as I can tell from the photos it looks to be in excellent cosmetic condition. :thmbsp:

Hope it gets to you safely, and don't forget - we want to see some detailed photos when you get it up and running.

ToToMan,

You've got excellent taste. If I'm ever able to make it over to your side of the pond, I truly hope I can come by and enjoy some fish and chips and a Mackeson's (or an Irish Smithwick's) with you, and listen to that fine gear.

I applaud your sense of design, as well. Looks like a comfy home!

Phew! Thanks for the reassurance, guys. :)

I'll make a point of STRESSING to the seller just HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO MAKE SURE THIS GIRL IS PROPERLY PROTECTED DURING TRANSIT!

Now, if only I had the courage to break the news to my mum that ANOTHER receiver will soon be occupying another portion of the house! :D Seriously though, I'll need to start thinning the herd soon to recoup some space and money. The most likely victim will probably be my CR-820....

ps - thedelihaus, you're more than welcome to drop in if you're ever in Scotland. Glaswegian fish&chips are the best in the world! :thmbsp:

Here's the message I sent to the seller. Hope I haven't put him off sending it to me :D :

Hi

I'm so pleased to have won the auction for the CR-1020.

You are probably aware of this already, but I cannot stress highly enough how crucial it is to make sure a unit of this size and weight is suitably packaged to withstand the bumps and bruises of transit.

As a minimum guideline, I'd recommend that the receiver be wrapped firstly in several layers of thick-style bubblewrap, then that moulded corners of foam/styrene are placed over all 8 corners of the unit, before placing the whole thing snugly inside a strong well-taped box. The foam/styrene corners are essential because they make sure that the front and rear connections do NOT come into contact with the walls of the box, otherwise they'd likely snap-off due to pressure.

If it's not too much trouble, I'd be extremely grateful if you could email me a photo of the receiver during the packaging process, just so that I can verify that it's been suitably packaged.

PayPal payment on the way shortly.

Many thanks,

merrylander

And some A**hole with the shipper will still manage to drop the box on a corner. I am seriously considering getting out of repairs unless they are carry-in. UPS is good about coughing up $$$ when I complain about damage, but I really don't need the aggravation. I pack well, I use brand new ($3.00 ea.) 275 pound test boxes, I buy bubble wrap at Staples. I make cardboard protectors for the corners (I can buty them at Uline for $69 a boxfull-sure). I bag the angel turd so that it can't shift around, even our UPS driver says my packing is good, but God forbid that I ship to NC, NY or TX, cause some gorilla will work the box over with a sledge hammer.

Nothing like getting a box shipped interstate, and having it arrive soaking wet, when a good look at the shipping date and delivery date, and route the package took shows perfectly dry and sunny weather for the duration.

Or even better, being delivered a crumpled box with a big boot print on it... :grumpy:
