I've got two CD players that are on the fritz, and I'd like opinions as to whether they're worth having repaired...

I've been using a Marantz model CC-65U. It's a changer that sounds nice to me when it's running. Lately it's taken to sporadic bad behavior. It will be playing along nicely and suddenly start sounding scratchy, then grind to a halt. No play. Sometimes it won't even load.

The second is one I just got at a rummage sale. NAD Monitor Series 5000 (for $3!). It doesn't want to read. Sometimes it will get so far as to read the total time on the disc and a couple seconds of track 1, but then it will stop and I get "- - -" on the display and no output.

I attempted to clean the lens on the NAD. No change in symptoms. Something in my head tells me that they both might have motor issues, but I know nothing about troubleshooting these things.

Both of these were made in 1991. Am I better off cutting my losses and buying one of the cheap Sony DVD players that some of you are raving about?

Both of these bad boys are 15 yrs old. That they even power up anymore is prolly sayin' a lot...My vote would be for saying buh-bye to 'em, getting a new player/recorder, & not looking back.

Cut your losses, good bet that the optics are going out, also a good bet they are no longer available (at least for a realistic cost).

Hi Terry,

I recently purchased a Pioneer PD-M90X Reference, pre Elite, cdp that does not read. I can see that the spindle motor starts to turn on occasion and then stops. Is it worth repairing in your professional opinion. I believe it was manufactured in 1987.

Thanks,
Paul
