View Full Version : Tighten Marantz tuning cord?

Well, the not too unpredictible happened. While re-lamping a 2235B I'm giving my brother/sister-in-law as a wedding present (go figure, they asked), my tuner string got stretched. I say "got stretched" because I can't really blame my 3yo daughter for asking "what's this daddy?" and tugging.
Now it's strung correctly, all the pullys and brackets are remounted right, but when spinning the tuner wheel it doesn't move the pointer or the tuner. But when tension is put on it, it moves fine.
Right near the dial pointer on the cord is a rubber sleeved portion that feels like there's a knot or some other structure in there joining the ends. Is that the place to do this? Any other hints?
Thanks for any help.

Is there a tension spring on the "pulley" that is connected to the tuning capacitor? You could possibly take up any slack at that point.

I will sometimes add a second tension spring in parallel with the original.

Tension spring is essentially fully retracted.
To me (admittedly, a moron), it looks like the cord needs to be shortened, unless loosening the pulley at the tuning capacitor can take up the slack without un-aligning it. This shortening idea is complicated by the tension spring being attached to a mid-point in the cord, rather than an end.

You might be able to take some of the slack out by giving the string some extra loops on the tuning knob spindle.

I'll look at that tonight.
Otherwise, I'll try to move the rubber sleeve and look at how the ends are joined (knots, metal clips, etc.).

Hello,
make a knot in the sling where the tuning cord meets the tension spring inside the tuner-pulley!

Did I mention I'm a moron?
I had it strung wrong - I had two pulleys transposed. It's now fixed, and with no major surgery.
I'll try to get some pictures of the stringing in daylight to attach to this thread for posterity and research.
