Hi,
I would like to buy a upconverting player. My tv has dvi but not hdmi. Did some searching and I found a few samsung models but the reviews on them are terrible. What else should I be looking at?

Here's a great little searcher I ran across
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDname=philips+&Search=Search&dvdportable=&dvdchanger=&dvdtv=&sacd=1&chipset=&orderby=Name&hits=50&Submit2=Search
I spent a tons of hours researching & web shopping, then found a perfectly acceptable $27 open box unit at Circuit City.

Try the Oppo 971H. It has DVI out, upscales (upconverts) and as a plus is region free. Good picture, reasonably priced.

The new Onkyo DVSP404 is a good unit with HDMI upconversion, too. I think it's about $135 at CC right now. Great audio section for the money. The Integra line is better...Onkyo's higher end. Uses more audiophile grade components and has a 3 year warranty. They have a DPC7.7 that's around $400 retail. One thing about them, if you use the HDMI for upconverting (which I dont think makes enough of a difference to me...FWIW), you lose the "all outputs active" part of the Integra. Even though my Panasonic TV has DVI, I still use all component video cables so I can do Component Upconversion thru my AV receiver. Doesnt make the picture look any better if it's converting composite or S-Video from my VCR, but it's easier to hook up, less cables, and looks great. I have a HD Satellite receiver and do have a DVI cable hooked to the TV but 99% of the time, I use the component cables. Just my $.02 of course. There are lots of good units out there, though.

I recommend the Oppo units, as well. I have two 970HD's. See comments here: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi?function=search&articles=all&type=&manufacturer=0&maxprice=0&deInt=0&mpeg=0

Who the heck is Oppo? Never heard of them and they weren't listed as having a spot at CEDIA a couple weeks back. 25 years in this and there are too many dang brands out there! I wonder who's building their unit for them? Is it some sort of house brand? I checked out their site and it doesn't look like they make much. I'll have to stick to the big guns.

I have the Sony DVP-NS3100ES. Nice unit with SACD capabilities too. It's hooked up to my KDS-60A2000 SXRD bigscreen and it looks great. Earl. Whaddaya want as far as a 'good' single disc goes? I have a nice Yammie CD-2000 I'll trade ya, if that changer you have is black.

I have a Sony DVP-NS975 and it does look good in 1080i.
but, I recently got for free a "2000" Technics DVD/A10 and the reg component output pic quality beat it. I was suprised. but the technics is built like a tank.
