View Full Version : Your predictions for vintage Marantz prices?

A few months ago when I bought my Marantz 2285B (told the story in a post here) the guy who sold it to me said that he would have charged me a lot more for it a year or two earlier, but the prices on most Marantz gear, especially 22XX series, had been falling here throughout this year.

He explained that it seemed to be the influence of the mainland Chinese market (I live in Hong Kong). It seemed that mainland Chinese had learned that Marantz was good a few years ago, and were grabbing every Marantz they saw, which drove up the prices... but then they got more knowledgable about other brands, and about the different Marantz models, and more into tubes, so only the rarer and larger Marantz items were still expensive or going up in price. The other Marantz gear, including the entire 22XX line, has not been rising and has even fallen in price, as it became "less fashionable" or "less desireable" for collectors in the big market North of here. That said, prices for 23XX and earlier Marantz tube gear --if you can still find any-- remain high, and are probably rising slowly.

I read here on AK about the value of these things going up, including predictions of the 2265 I paid $38 for today (and probably would have had to pay $60 for last year) going ip to $300 in a year or two, and it seems steady price inflation is happening on eBay, but it doesn't seem to apply here, at least not to the lower- and mid-level Marantz stuff. Lately some price levels on eBay have almost made me want to buy a 2325 and 2385 at "retail" shop prices here. The local prices were equal to eBay prices a year ago, but the local prices have not gone up since then. I'm wondering, is this apparent difference in price levels (between HK and the US) an anomaly, a mis-perception on my part, or an "investment opportunity"?

No one knows the future, but what are your predictions for where prices (on Marantz gear in particular) are heading? For all models, or only for the higher-end ones? How confident are you of your prediction?

I'm curious about this, because I could probably get a dozen lower-end 22XX units tomorrow, for around $25 to $35. Do you think I will be kicking myself in a few years because I "let them get away"? [I will NOT actually go get them all, no room for it all, but just thinking about it as a mental exercise. Conclusions might affect my future decisions on the directions I take with my collecting addic- er, uh, hobby, and purchase decisions on occasional "borderline" units like the 2265, 2270, 2285.]

[Note to Moderator: I'm not sure if this is in the right forum. It is NOT a "how much is this worth" post, more a generic thought exercise about future trends, but it does touch on price levels. Feel free to move the post if you think it doesn't belong here.]

The trend seems to be down for the brands I look at but a few TOTL models remain high. There are some spikes due to collectors overbidding. Best to watch and identify what is the baseline price. I'd say the 2270 and above at your local prices are great values and you can get more if you are able to sell to the U.S. But the shipping cost of crossing the Pacific will kill any price difference.

For $25-$35 a piece I'd grab every model, If you are a Marantz collector. Or at least a good sprinkling of the various models. The all silver faced ones and the black and silver ones. I paid up to 10X and considerably more on some of my "mint" receivers/amps/TTs/tapedecks. Even the littlest Marantz paired with good speakers sounds very good.

And in general I think the eBay prices for the US market have been steadily increasing for vintage gear. With the increasing interest in vintage gear the prices will only go up. Simple economics, supply and demand. And the supply of gear in great shape is finite and slowly shrinking.

Yes, it's amazing how some brands go up and others decline.

Right now the "smart" money is investing in NOT Marantz, but ...... GE!!

Vintage audio is a disposable income issue and is affected by general economic conditions (i.e. price of gas, mortgage rates). Also technology changes could turn all my receivers into integrated amps. Shipping from Hong Kong scares most US buyers away. Maybe Europe and Australia would be different. I'm probably responsible for 1 or 2 of the spikes SoCal Sam is talking about but as onepixel said the supply is shrinking. I don't buy to make a fortune in a few years, but to experience the gear while it is still available and hope I don't get burned to bad if I had to sell for some reason. At those prices you could have one nice collection for not a lot of money. Good luck with your decision.

I've been watching the 2270s for a while and thought they would be coming down from $180 for the bottom dwellers. Now it is next to impossible to snag them for less than $200. The other models, just as comparable are not going up as fast. I think the 2285 is a great deal since it stays in the shadow of the 2270, yet it is newer and more powerful. I have both and on first impressions, the 2285 seems more complete and better sounding.

The Bs seem to be popular right now. I've just got a 2238B for my brother.

I can understand why. I have owned tons of models/brands of SS receivers and when I discovered Marantz I fell in love.
People just like the "three martini" sound I guess.

I sorta fell off the Marantz bandwagon. Don't get me wrong, I still love 'em, but I am wholly enthralled with the Sansui sound as of late.

By the way 1 Starr, that is one badazz ride!

Ok I've only had 2 and it is only 5:30pm here in the desert. We've had high clouds al day we're setting up to have a Kick Butt sunset  If any of ya'll have been to AZ this time of year you know that the colors can't be belived, let alone captured on film. Thanks for the three martini sound description, my Gramps would agree :thmbsp:

I've been tryin' to pick up extra shifts at work so I can get more Marantz to play with.

They are rising since I got one in May, soon I say $300 by next year for 2270
