Artist - The Waldos
Title - Rent Party
Year of Release - 1994
Record Label - Sympathy for the Record Industry
Genre - Rock & Roll
Everyone on AK who has read my posts knows I am a Johnny Thunders/Lou Reed/New York City guitar-rock fan in the extreme. Johnny's longtime stage-partner, Walter Lure, came out with a solo album a while ago, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Holy crap was I blown away!!

"Rent Party" is 100% New York. Sped-up Chuck Berry riffs, grimey guitars, and songs about partyin' and chicks.
What a lot of people don't realise is that Walter was an equal partner with Johnny as both a Heartbreaker and later when they toured and sporadically recorded together. Walter's rhythm guitar was always tight and when Johnny's playing would slide into an out-of-tune smear, Walter would always be there to keep things going as straight-ahead as possible. He never forgot lyrics and when necessary, he always picked up the lead guitar lines without a moment's hesitation.
Walter played with The Waldos when he wasn't working as a New York City stockbroker. For six years they performed shows around NYC, but in '94 they finally got into the studio and put this LP together. The four-piece is extremely tight, covering plenty of new material, oldies (Ray Charles' Busted and Doc Pomus's Seven Day Weekend), and some from the Heartbreakers' vaults, Flight and Count Down Love).
No effects pedals, no synths, and no bullshit. 100% Rock & Roll is what the Waldos were about. If you like bluesy/Stonesy guitars that will get you amped for a night on the town, this album will make you one happy cat.
