I had a lead on a 630 and for whatever reason decided to go for it. The unit is clean and everything works with only an issue of the selector lights on AUX. Except for the JVC JR-S301 and Fisher 500-C, none of the receivers I have do well with 4 ohm loads. I have The Smaller Advents and my Klipsch Heresys are 4 ohms. I thought the 630 with its specks and dula mono design would do well. I first tried it on the Smaller Advents and the mating was better than had been with the JVC. Bass had more authority and better detail. Not sure why since the amp does not seem fast and the inertia of the speaker woofer is a problem. I was going to leave the combo alone but after reading comments on the Klipsch board about the 430, pulled out the Klipsch. Based on what I had heard I had a feeling the highs would be horrendous with the Klipsch horns. Wrong! The Heresy with its 50 hz limited woofer always seemed a bit bass shy partially for this reason and the high end extension of the speaker. While the high end is still a bit hot, the speaker had excellent well defined usable bass al the way down. The mids lost the somewhat harsh charactor and vocals became more realistic. Piano strikes now all don't sound as much like metal on metal. In the high end, strings are not steely but lost some of the resolution I've grown used to with the speakers. Triangle is just right. The big difference is in the overall delivery. Previously, the Klipsch always delivered the notes and music but, seemed to delliver each note and instrument individually rather than as a co-ordinated whole. While not up to the Mc or Philips systems (with my Bozaks and original Advents), the presentation became better. It still delivers the individual instruments but, there is a balance. I now wish the other 2 systems could deliver this. The mids are a bit depressed related to the high-end. There is a way to reduce the output of the high end horn by 3db and I finally have a reason to go in and do some surgery on the crossover to accomplish this. I've not tried the phono section of the H-K but, hope to do a quick listen over the weekend. The Klipsch crowd raves about the 430 but, I think the 630 is also a great match - at least for the 4 ohm version of the Heresy IIs.

I have a 430 and the sound is absolutely wonderful. I have over 30 receivers and it sounds as nice as anything I have

Brian - As for the issue of the selector lights on AUX. If you're talking about the tuner lights all going out when you switch to AUX... I believe the 630's were built that way. The one I bought for a friend did the same thing.

Just thought I'd let you know, so you don't go nuts trying to figure out a problem that may not actually exist in the first place.

Anyone else know?

No, what happens is the function lights that light when switched to FM, AM, Phono turn on to show its respective source input as you turn the source selector. However, when I turn to AUX not only does the AUX light go on but so do all the others -FM, AM, Phono and Aux. Sound okay so it is restricted to the light control switching. The tuner dial and meter lights all function and yes, when not using the AM or FM, the dial lamps shut down.

Still haven't figured open it up to figure out the light issue but this morning in trying to figure out something puzzling me with a Sherwood receiver I acquired last week, a 7650. I used the H-K as a tester on my Bozak Symphonys. Oh boy, on male vocals, everyone had a nasal proble. Same with female but less so. Music had nice delivery but seemed to lose the delicecy the Bozaks are capable and usually deliver. Running less than a watt average power so not a clipping problem. With the music, if I did not know what the speakers were capable of I'd almost like the combination but, through in the vocals and this ain't a good match. Sad since in the sound staging, the setup did better than many other things I've put on the speakers.

Last night needing something to do listeing with for the CBC, disconnected the Bozaks and hooked up the Smaller Advents. I've finally got them dialed in placement wise in the room pretty good. OH, ORGASM! My 2 hour listeing session started at 8:00PM and finally ended at 9:00AM this morning and only through the convincing of my wife. I'll sub my original Advents this evening but, I almost can not imagine it getting better than I heard without strapping on the big stuff. French horns walk a thin line to sound right and they were bank on, strings, delicate resonate, no confusion when massed, triangle perfet, harp - oh, I need another fix.

Try these vintage speakers for your receiver. Same company.

Rather interesting speakers. Wonder what is inside the cabs. I like the Empire 7000s with the marble top but these things visually don't make it for me. I am starting to look at a set of Dynaco A25s though. I've opened up the 630, cleaned all the controls, and the interior. Looks like it has never been repaired and is very well made. Still can not figure out the all lights being on when I switch to Aux. The switch looks clean, nothing out of place, no solder shards, does not look like the switch has ever be touched not the wiring to the lights. The unit does sound better than it did but the preamp is still the weak point. That said, it is one of the better sounding receivers I've had my hands on and not going anywhere. I had the Sherwood gone through and it still sounds the same. It will be looking for a good home. Thinking of donating it with a set of speakers, a CD and a tt to my kid's music department that does not have anything.
