I've known about Yamaha's Digital Sound Projector line for a while. And, Polk has their own SurroundBar thingie (With "SDA" techonology!). I think either one of those would be a great choice for the right room.

The Yamaha is neat because it's got all of the processing and amps inside it, and the Polk is neat because it's just a speaker and you power it with any amps and processor you want. Neither one comes with a subwoofer, though both will work with one.

Just yesterday, I learned about another setup from some Niro Nakamichi dude who says he's got the perfect package.

I really like the older ones - especially the orange setup on this page.

Anyhow, I'm just hoping to spur discussion. I'd probably get one of the Yamaha's if I needed one. They're electronics are always top-notch and I get really good pricing. I do really like orange, though! :D

FYI you'll see the Polk version on ebay Canada quite often.

does that suggest it's not quite "perfect"?

Actually I did not mean to imply that at all. I've bought 2 sets of Monitor 40's off one particular seller who sells NIB and almost NIB with cosmetic issues such as minor scratches. The ones that I picked up look like display samples, possibly from stores that went under. The same goes for the surround bars I think.

I have no doubt that Polk will sound OK. I believe you are correct to try to voice the speakers from one company. I am changing my speakers from vintage JBL L300, L100t3, and a JBL center to Hales T-5 front, T-2 rear, Rev 1 side and a closely matching center. I still have the old powered 12" JBL subwoofer for now. At least for the first time I will have a 7.1 set up that my vacuum tube HT preamplifier can run. As long as your speakers all voice well together all should be good. Me I am kind of impressed with some of the older higher end Polk speakers that can be had for very good prices used. Then again I am always scrounging to upgrade my home audio. John

A coworker of mine has picked up the Yamaha bar but has yet to set it up. He's an old pro at HT sound so I will report back once I get the lowdown. From his perspective, the built in processor/amp was the deciding factor over the Polk option.
