Just got a pair off of CL yesterday. They sound MUCH better than the old pair. Tighter bass and a soundstage. Different source equipment was used today but I don't think it made that much difference. Are the II's considered to be an improvement on the original?

Have your old Heresys been recapped? If not, they need it.

What inprovment would a recap make?

After about 15 minutes of listening, that is exactly what popped into my mind! These really sound SO much better!

I had the same reaction ... comparing some 1983 Heresy's that I got recently (http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=77604&highlight=heresy) and a pair of 1967 Heresy's that I bought a couple of years ago ... they are hooked up to different receivers ... in different rooms ... probably should stack them with the same receiver to get a real comparison ...

The Is and IIs each have their supporters. I don't think the II was introduced as an improvement as much as the original drivers in the Is were being phased out by E-V. The Is can have some major tuning done because of the metal horns. The IIs use a phenolic horn and do not respond as well to tuning.

Some of the folks at Klipsch & Associates felt that the II was a step down from the I, but the III is an upgrade over both.

There was some talk about Klipsch producing an upgrade kit to turn a II into a III.

All the Heresy models sound pretty good. I prefer the original Heresy to the II or III. I think the main reason for the II was to save money in manufacturing. I know a bit about wholesale pricing of drivers and I would make a wager that the entire driver set in a Heresy II or III did not cost Klipsch as much as just the midrange driver (K-55) in the Heresy I.
