They score is in quotes because it's in horrendous shape. The power cord is ripped off, it's about and inch long now. It's very dirty inside and there's three different knobs missing on it. The only good thing is that the face is decent looking. I did want to get something with potentail that's in nasty shape and cheap to learn on, so this may as well be my starting point. If I do ever get it to look and run nicely I'll be stoked. :music: P.S. t was "Dirt" cheap. :scratch2:

I love it when that happens. It could be the diamond in the rough, so put a power word in it, check it over for any signs of self destruction, and see what happens.
I'd rather have a project for $20 that requires some work but will be rewarding than spend 10X that for something that just gets put on the shelf.

It boils down to one thing: Ability.
If you have the smarts to fix it, then buy broke stuff, if you want to learn, spend very little on broke stuff. if you dont know, or dont care to know, buy the "nice condition" stuff.
I personally ALWAYS buy project peices, because I know I wont end up with a parts unit, I will repair it until it works right.
learners, be careful, soldering and electricity are dangerous, be careful!
Lets face it, with the right amount of determination, someone who wants something fixed will get it fixed.
Good luck dinglebeer, Marantz stuff is great, and fin to work on.

I will buy units that have potential to restore if the price is low enough. Labor Day I picked up a Marantz 2235B for $10 in a very rough walnut case. Most of the dial lights/funtion lights were out and one push button had the knob broke off. I revenered parts of the case, made a push button knob from 3/8 inch aluminum bar stock and replaced the dial lights. Good luck on fixing up your 2235B

I'm not a tech guy, so I would want to buy "plug and play" gear.
But I understand the desire to learn what one can of electronics repair and a Marantz would be a good one to use for learning.
I think it also comes down to what you have excess of. For me, it's not cash. So if I can pick up a $20 unit in trouble and fix it up, I'll have a working 2235B. If I can't, I won't have a 2235B.
What I do have is an excess of youthful enthusiasm. Or stupidity. I think they're the same thing. It's also nice to get a break from what I do for a living. My former hobby was computers. I realized the reason I found working on them so relaxing is that as a lawyer I deal in "gray" all day - there is no wrong answer. With electronics, especially digital, there is one right answer and the rest are wrong. It's binary: off/on, right/wrong. Kind of freeing in a perverse sort of way.
Good luck with the 2235B. I've got a 2238 I need to replace the power cord on, and I expect finding one with the sexy little Marantz plug at the end will be a bear.
