View Full Version : American Idol- not a fan.
thedelihaus 11-06-2006, 07:26 AM I was unfortunately a captive audience during part of this show last night.
I'll freely admit some of the singers have good pipes, some have potential, but there's others who really, really don't.
And part of the joy, I find, with the home audience, is seeing someone fail. and be ridiculed for it. I almost fell into it- I'll admit I rubberneck at car accidents- I even rubbernecked at my own car wreck- but it's really not nice to make fun out of someone trying so hard, and I caught myself (this time) and held back from joining in the reindeer games.
And the rude judge fella- his persona is good for tv villians, James bond bad guys, and New York real estate tycoons, but in real life, it's just hurtful behavior, I don't care how many hours of air time you sell to Elio's frozen pizza or Swiffer dust products.
The worst part just may be the chosen material- some real lousy songs chosen to sing live, on stage, in public.
I question if I'd rather be ear-humped with a number two pencil straight outta the pencil sharpener, while wearing a soiled toddler's diaper on my head, that just had the runs after gourging itself on pureed peas and baby formula, all while getting a lap dance from Corey Feldman AND Corey Haim, or have to deal with that experience again.
Insult to injury? Cranked loudly through the television speakers, to roaringly deafening levels.
dr*audio 11-06-2006, 07:51 AM I hear ya! The biggest insult of that show is to the intelligence of the viewers. It really irks me that they are trying to homogenize the entertainment industry, making all the singers sound alike, singing with that fake soul style, augmenting the notes without any regard to the emotion in the lyrics or lack thereof. All the contestants seem to think they have to sound this way. It really sucks and no one with any real musical individuality or musical creative ability has any chance on that show. Then they have the contestants who can't even sing at all and have no business being in front of an audience at all. It's sort of like a musical version of "Jackass." My wife and kids used to watch the show and I would just avoid the room entirely. Glad they don't anymore.
Brudha 11-06-2006, 08:07 AM American Idol? Doesn't that usually start in January or something?

I once suggested that all the contestants sing The Pyramidiacs' "No Soul", because the singers are just miming the song, mimicing the singing style, and no heart, no soul is going into it. Or so it seems.
I got blank stares.
Then angry stares.
Then no one talked to me the rest of the night.
And I was kinda happy about it.

It might. For all I know, these folk last night were taking bets among each other and were getting ready to text-message votes in for the 2003 American Idol winner.
I wonder if any of them got it right... :scratch2:

You're right, the premiere for the new season is January 16

Andyman 11-06-2006, 05:13 PM American Idol = Muzak for the Wal*Mart generation
WhiteSE 11-06-2006, 05:40 PM I dont think they are insulting the audience at all...the audience they cater to couldnt care or doesnt know what a good singer is...
Mariah Carey and the overdo made it without American Idol..so the style of singing was there before AI's existance. The retarded people who spend their hard earned cash on manufactured art..that is their main audience.
Ultra-Hog 11-06-2006, 05:44 PM I can't stand that show. The negatives outweigh the very few positives about it that it is just too hard to watch. I'm not talking about the performers, they are just a mixed bag of amateurs and that's OK, it's the behavior of the judges and the atmosphere that the whole show creates.
On the other hand and on an entirely unrelated note, Brudha, do you have a license for that avatar? :yikes: :naughty: :thmbsp:
That's a 64 Chevy Impala, isn't it? Sure is pretty! Just kidding! Now back to our regularly scheduled topic.
Kamakiri 11-06-2006, 08:43 PM Nawww that's a '69 Charger :)
Re: American Idol......how many people CAN butcher "Pink Cadillac", anyways :dunno:

Geeze, and I thought I was cynical! That's tellin' 'em, Spank!
ampegdan 11-06-2006, 09:00 PM I've had a problem with people turning music into a competition ever since high school. Being in band or choir was all about the upcoming competitions instead of the experience of making music. Mind you, we frequently placed well or won, but around senior year it kind of got like, "Is this why we really do this?". American Idol takes this misguided idea one step further. Let's humiliate people in front of millions of others. The winners' 15 minutes of fame starts ticking as soon as they start the first round. Sorry for the rant-hit a nerve there somewhere.

thedelihaus 11-07-2006, 03:01 AM Idol is truly a four-letter word...
doctorbongo 11-07-2006, 03:15 AM I never have WATCHED it, but like so many things, I stumbled across it one night. There was a grayhaired doofus (this is a description, not an indictment of grayheads. I would be referred to as an inadvertent skinhead) who had a VERY ordinary voice and a bit of stage flair. His competition, and I think she may have been his only remaining competitor, was a cute brunette with lot of sex appeal and a big voice. I heard later the "hey, I got about nuthin' here" dude won. I wasn't interested to start with, but after that, I'm WAY not interested. A bunch of mostly lame songs sung by mostly limited talent folks. it's like the gong show with a thin patina of "legitimacy", and none of Jaye P. Morgan's blue jokes. Okay, none of the humor whatsoever, other than the ridicule variety referenced by monsieur black dahlquist. We play dreck on the station for which I'm news director. I don't need to hear it on my TEEVEE, too... Watched a bit of that thing with guys from jane's addiction/metallica/guns 'n' roses. it was a bit better. at least the backup band was respectable. But the truth is, I just can't build specific programs into my sked. If it's good, like "The Office," it will be on for decades in syndication, and I can watch it every night to catch up. I got hooked on Law & Order about 10 years ago. Watched it every day for a year, sometimes twice a day. Got that out of my system.
2DualsNotEnough 11-07-2006, 03:28 AM Simon's opinions have no merit to me since all he's looking for is boring, vanilla homoginized singers that fit into little slots.Heres the long haired "rocker",heres the soul diva, theres the handsome mainstream country crooner.Have you seen the movie American Dreamz? The parodies of American Idol singers is right on the money.
Its no different from Star Search 20 years ago.
