View Full Version : Your #1 reason for hanging with us Kamakiri 11-10-2006, 10:04 PM As a member, what is your main draw to AudioKarma, and has it changed over your time here? Tripqzon 11-10-2006, 10:08 PM My main draw is the fact that the folks here share the same interest in vintage audio that I do. My brother and myself are the only people I know personally that share this love. AK is a great place for me to share my love of vintage with people who actually care. Being here is one of the great pleasures of my life. Thanks for being here. Paul dr*audio 11-10-2006, 10:08 PM I enjoy kibitzing about music and audio equipment with folks without having their eyes glaze over. cubdog 11-10-2006, 10:10 PM For the most part it is the membership. While I often get my feathers ruffled I apprecieate the varied opinions and knowledge base here. Good people make for a good time. Thanks to all. cubdog theblackknight 11-10-2006, 10:10 PM good thread. I kind of new so I cant say that much, but mainly its the only place it can think and talk about my hobby without others thinking Im strange.:sigh: Its difinately my favorite web site, and my favrite thing to do when im at home.:D :D :D :D :D I also have found many useful tips, etc, here.:thmbsp: OvenMaster 11-10-2006, 10:30 PM There are three reasons I am here: #2. So I can learn more from others. #5. So I might share what I know to help someone. #3. The daily belly laughs. This place is funnier than Family Guy and The Simpsons put together. Thanks to everyone here for making this place an online home and community. Regards from Tom Ultra-Hog 11-10-2006, 10:32 PM Vote early, vote often.:scratch2: I want to vote for #2, #3 and #4. In addition to those choices, another choice that is not listed but would have received my vote would have been the desire to learn about vintage audio. While I may have grown up with a lot of gear that is now "vintage" audio gear, my personal experience was only with a very narrow segment of the industry. With a few possible exceptions, it was also not in the same league as so much of the equipment that I have been able to obtain recently and have been able to learn about on AK. I learn something new on AK every day! The individuals that make AK the outstanding community that it is are the best!:thmbsp: doucanoe 11-10-2006, 10:35 PM I found AK a while back while searching for information on vintage gear. I have found many audio forum sites but none have drawn me in like AudioKarma. My original attachment to this place revolved more around being able to share information and ideas with like minded audio crazies. It's still about that, but it is now more about the friends that I have made here. RC Negotiableterms 11-10-2006, 10:37 PM Came for the info, stayed for the friends. pbda 11-10-2006, 10:40 PM Initially it was about the technical knowledge, and that is still very relevant. But my attachment to the site is now about the folks who constitute it. ekmanning5 11-10-2006, 10:41 PM I am very new here and don't really know anyone. But I am always impressed by how friendly and helpful everyone is. I appreciate the technical advice that is given so freely and because of it I am miles ahead of where I was a year ago in terms of understanding and attempting to fix my stuff. It's great to be able to talk about Audio without having to rein myself in after 30 seconds. And yes, the sense of humor here is great. I didn't cast a vote in the pole because each and every reason is equally important to me. Sandy G 11-10-2006, 10:43 PM 'Cause y'all put up with me, even as big of a Jerk that I am... Urizen 11-10-2006, 10:47 PM I found AK while looking for specific information on a vintage tuner, having previously lurked and posted a little at the "nuthouse" for two years or so. I found that the folks here were much friendlier, and it was moderated. What keeps me here are the people, the laughter and the occasional tear. I learn something every time I log in. AK rocks!:guitar: Celt 11-10-2006, 10:49 PM Enjoy the friends I've made here and enjoy passing along the limited audio knowledge I possess. luvvinvinyl 11-10-2006, 10:53 PM If I had to choose between my AK friends, and my stereo gear, my house would be silent, save and except for the sound of my laughter and occasional tears, shared with my friends. wajobu 11-10-2006, 10:53 PM What everyone else has said! yamahammer 11-10-2006, 10:56 PM all of the above reasons opt80 11-10-2006, 10:58 PM AK is good for my mental health, the dental plan is good too. Seriously, this place is an oasis for me A steve gibson 11-11-2006, 01:14 AM Like many others I came for the technical help and discussion but I stay because of the friendships. pustelniakr 11-11-2006, 01:22 AM Good friends. Kind of an extended family. The joy of helping others save this sweet gear from the landfill... Enjoy, Rich P watts up doc? 11-11-2006, 01:25 AM I was looking for brusell sprouts recipies and I found this place. :music: ozmoid 11-11-2006, 01:39 AM Seriously, this place is an oasis for me Came for the info, stayed for the friends. Being here is one of the great pleasures of my life. For the most part it is the membership. While I often get my feathers ruffled I apprecieate the varied opinions and knowledge base here. Good people make for a good time. Thanks to all. I also have found many useful tips, etc, here.:thmbsp: All that, plus I LIKE THE HASH BROWNS! Scorpion8 11-11-2006, 01:58 AM Well, I have almost zero hope of ever meeting any of the people I correspond with, but the personalities and the discussion make this place like "old home". People like Paul C and dr*audio have helped me immensely, and while I'm far from being a technician beyond an amateur hobbyist, I do have some experiences to share, and even more importantly - so much to learn. Tony V 11-11-2006, 02:01 AM I agree with Yamahammer...All the above and then some. I couldnt imagine not being able to hang out here. Its a part of my daily routine now and wouldnt have it any other way. -Tony SPL db 11-11-2006, 03:13 AM Came for the info, stayed for the friends. Couldn't have said it better myself! :thmbsp: Scott jaymanaa 11-11-2006, 06:53 AM Like so many have said, my initial reason for joining AK was the search for audio nirvana. What keeps me coming back everyday (since I have acheived audio nirvana:D ) is the people. The first thing I do every morning is grab a cup of coffee, and check in at AK. One of the things that I think is particularly cool is getting to talk to folks in other parts of the country, and even the world. I guess the best part is what Sandy said. You guys put up with me! I can't wait for Fest time.:thmbsp: Jay RichPA 11-11-2006, 07:23 AM Came for the info, stayed for the friends. Exactly. Fran604g 11-11-2006, 08:01 AM I came for knowledge, I stayed for the enjoyment! WhiteSE 11-11-2006, 08:11 AM I dont even remember how I found this place....All i know is that I get Grumpy when I dont have my daily contact with AK. Mark W. 11-11-2006, 12:23 PM my own mental illness tentoze 11-11-2006, 12:26 PM I came here for the music discussion, then stayed for the brussels sprouts. rickon66 11-11-2006, 12:39 PM Initially looking for info, but stayed around for the friendly non-critical atmosphere. Great place to relax, laugh and sometimes even be informed on just about any subject under the sun. Thanks for creating and maintaining such a wonderful site!!!:thmbsp:  :tresbon: P.S. _ Thanks for introducing me to tube audio and completely busting my mad money bank account, but it sure is fun!! Toasted Almond 11-11-2006, 07:49 PM Came for the camaraderie, stayed in order to torment Tentoze. Hey Frankenstein, you out there and tuned in? Sandy G 11-11-2006, 07:53 PM Well, George, you do a "bang-up" good job there !.... <grin> Dusty Chalk 11-11-2006, 08:53 PM I don't know -- I just sort of wandered in, and grabbed a drink, hung around, and just haven't been motivated to leave yet. cfoster 11-12-2006, 04:37 AM I was referred while looking for information and found something that I wanted even more. People to talk to about good audio. I'm a city dweller who does not drive so I am unable to join the Chicago audio society since they meet out in the suburbs at locations that are only accessible by car. Not that I could go anyway since when they meet, I'm usually working. So this is a great outlet. Thanks for being here. Clyde tentoze 11-12-2006, 04:45 AM Came for the camaraderie, stayed in order to torment Tentoze. Hey Frankenstein, you out there and tuned in? And this starts exactly when? cabinover 11-12-2006, 07:04 AM Came for Bose info I think, stay for the friendship and professional banter from the above posters. Yamaha B-2 11-12-2006, 08:31 AM I enjoy kibitzing about music and audio equipment with folks without having their eyes glaze over.Amen.......and, I learn a great deal from others' knowledge and experience. ginovino 11-12-2006, 10:51 AM I came... I saw... I cannot leave! ozmoid 11-12-2006, 10:37 PM 82 votes, and no one has yet selected "The deals or pricing info". tentoze 11-13-2006, 12:48 AM 82 votes, and no one has yet selected "The deals or pricing info". I suspect this is due to the fact that all the ones who would vote for that choice (and they would be legion) never venture outside the Dollars & Sense forum. Eunomians 11-13-2006, 01:10 AM I hang around here from time to time, to suck all the knowledge out of you all  Dusty Chalk 11-13-2006, 01:22 AM You suck? Since when? Cleve 11-13-2006, 07:44 AM Well, it's a mix of many things for me - but since this is an audio-centric website, I chose Option 2 - if I wasn't interested in audio/music/electronics I wouldn't have ever come here in the first place. Nakdoc 11-13-2006, 10:25 AM AK community matches my passion for analog 2 channel old stuff that belongs in the trash...err...treasure bin. mhardy6647 11-13-2006, 10:52 AM I particularly enjoy Grumpy, Tentoze, and Tosted Almond's gentle, almost Zenlike personalities... Justen 11-13-2006, 11:24 AM I came here while looking for vintage porn... Ak came up with Pioneer nudes... Now I can't seem to find the damn door! How the heck do I get out of here? Cleve 11-13-2006, 12:01 PM I came here while looking for vintage porn... Ak came up with Pioneer nudes... You know, we ought to have a thread where we try and figure out any and every term/phrase/expression in audio that could also be taken as suggestive/lewd/pornographic. For example, in the fire department, we have sayings like "we go in when they're hot, and leave em wet". Army 11-13-2006, 12:14 PM At first it was because of a specfic brand of audio. Met so many great people since then, I enjoy their friendship and humor daily!:thmbsp: Billfort 11-13-2006, 12:20 PM I know it says No.1 reason but it would have been nice if this was a multiple choice poll. Like many here, I came for the audio but stick around because of the people. Kamakiri 11-13-2006, 12:28 PM I do find it interesting that out of the poll, nobody's said that their main reason for hanging here is pricing info, yet D&S gets a TON of traffic. Is it that those people didn't vote? Hm. Celt 11-13-2006, 01:09 PM I do find it interesting that out of the poll, nobody's said that their main reason for hanging here is pricing info, yet D&S gets a TON of traffic. Is it that those people didn't vote? Hm. They're too busy surfing E-Bay and hanging out in D&S to vote... Eunomians 11-13-2006, 01:42 PM Honestly, the reason why I am here is because I really enjoy AK's sense of community as well as the amazing cornucopia of knowledge stuffed into the minds of (most :D ) AK memers. I have learned A LOT since coming aboard. Sandy G 11-13-2006, 02:07 PM Stick around, Euromians, ol' buddy boy, & mebbe SOMEDAY you might be as smart as I think I am...hehehehehehe.....-Unca Sandy tentoze 11-13-2006, 02:44 PM They're too busy surfing E-Bay and hanging out in D&S to vote... Heh...you know what they say...great mimes stink alike... Fast_Eddie 11-13-2006, 04:01 PM I love it here because it's the only place on the internet that will have me! ozmoid 11-13-2006, 04:18 PM Heh...you know what they say...great mimes stink alike... I used to work as an interpreter for a bad mime... spartanmanor 11-13-2006, 04:27 PM This is the best online group I have been a member of. :tresbon: I came for the technical info, I stayed because of the people that are here.:thmbsp: MitsuMan 11-13-2006, 05:56 PM I came here because of rediscovering vintage gear. I stay because it's a truly unique place, unlike any other message board I've belonged to or belong to. :tresbon: Cleve 11-13-2006, 07:24 PM It IS a great place - if you're here for a while, it becomes a big extended family. radioactive 11-13-2006, 09:50 PM do find it interesting that out of the poll, nobody's said that their main reason for hanging here is pricing info, yet D&S gets a TON of traffic. Is it that those people didn't vote they did now and theres at least one vote there.(not mine of course) Yamaha B-2 11-13-2006, 10:01 PM While we all like a good deal  , that is not  the primary reason most of us are here. dmax99 11-13-2006, 10:02 PM This is an excellent place to hear about music.... KingBubba 11-13-2006, 10:15 PM I came to AK to learn and have done just that. It was hard to select that in the poll as the number one reason, but it is why I'm here. That said, it is also rewarding to have a place to go where people understand the sheer joy it is to find a pair of great old speakers by the side of the road or a classic old receiver at the flea market for $5. I try to explain to my friends or my family and they look at me as if I had lost my mind. That community that I am describing at AK is why I am here too. Thanks to all for creating this great forum. MarkAnderson 11-13-2006, 11:25 PM they did now and theres at least one vote there. :D Sorry, that was me. So still 0, really. I hang around here just 'cause there's one or two of you fellas that don't completely suck. Alright, maybe three or four..... Sandy G 11-13-2006, 11:30 PM Well, THAT'S damn charitable of you....<grin> MarkAnderson 11-14-2006, 12:54 AM Well, THAT'S damn charitable of you....<grin> :lmao: AudioKeith 01-10-2007, 01:33 PM ALL the above, but #1 is that the friendly people here make all the other choices work. ToTo Man 01-10-2007, 01:38 PM I wanted to vote for three, but I could only vote for one :(. My tri-vote goes to Technical Knowledge, Friends, and Sharing Experiences. joekid 02-10-2007, 09:01 PM QuadBob told me about this site, that the folks here share my sansui interest and there is alot of information, running around here. He was wright . This is a great place. Joe Sansui QRX 9001,Sansui SP X9 and Pioneer CS 99A speakers, Teac A 6300, Sansui RA 500,Sony CD player,ADC Equaliser,Dual 704 turntable and a Teac AN 180 .Am working on the Fisher cassette player Twenty20Man 02-10-2007, 11:03 PM There are three reasons I am here: #2. Thanks to everyone here for making this place an online home and community. Regards from Tom I could not have said it better myself:thmbsp: marantzfan 02-10-2007, 11:25 PM Came with an interest in vintage audio. I am now trudging onward with a snowballing obsession for vintage audio..Thanks alot guys! :gigglemad merrylander 02-11-2007, 09:20 AM Strange, I thought I had posted here and it did not ask me to vote so that seems to indicate that I did. A few years bck Pete (bully) told me about AK (I had been posting in AA) so I dropped in and lurked for some time. Finally saw a thread where I felt qualified to comment and have not looked back. As Rich noted, it is quite a bit about keeping good stuff out of landfills and about the satisfaction when you succeed. Main reason for staying is the friends made, even though I have yet to meet many of them face to face. Rob onepixel 02-11-2007, 11:18 PM Wandered in looking for some help...got shackled by the kindness of strangers, made friends and now I'm totally hooked. Wigwam Jones 02-11-2007, 11:22 PM I'm an undercover fed, keeping an eye on you guys. Oops. Ah, never mind. spaceman 02-13-2007, 01:57 AM All I wanted was a cup of coffee, & STILL no waitress in sight. :D I think it's already been said pretty well, came for info, stayed for the people. I do find it interesting to learn about the original monetary value of gear, but only to pat myself on the back a little, if I get a nice deal. :smoke: Mark B 02-13-2007, 02:16 AM The people of course! doctorbongo 02-13-2007, 02:57 AM :thmbsp: Voted for Friends and Such. But I might change my mind, based on what I'm hearing out of these AR-3As Dnewma turned me on to. Polls indicate (very good attribution here) that people care much more about the people they work with than the work or certainly the company. That's because people are generally pretty cool, and you get to use exponents on that statement here. Arkay 02-13-2007, 11:01 AM Like many here, I found this site because I was looking for information and knowledge, and that is what I got while I lurked for a few months. The more posts I read, though, the more I appreciated the people here. After I started posting, sharing my experiences also became a factor. There aren't very many places where vintage-audio nuts can converse with people who share that interest. I have some locally (Hong Kong), but they are all Chinese-speaking, and I prefer English. :D As I got to "know" the people here, it became more and more about the attitudes and sense of community among the people posting here. I had to vote for that, and in retrospect, I'm not surprised that over 70 percent have voted the same. This is one "special" online place! MrZero63 02-18-2007, 03:22 PM I came for the brussel sprouts but stayed for the beer and late night antics. :D Wigwam Jones 02-18-2007, 03:35 PM All I wanted was a cup of coffee, & STILL no waitress in sight. :D I think it's already been said pretty well, came for info, stayed for the people. I do find it interesting to learn about the original monetary value of gear, but only to pat myself on the back a little, if I get a nice deal. :smoke: "All I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me. Just a Pepsi." Institutionalized - Suicidal Tendencies Sometimes I try to do things and it just doesn't work out the way I wanted to. I get real frustrated and I try hard to do it and I take my time and it doesn't work out the way I wanted to. It's like I concentrate real hard and it doesn't work out Everything I do and everything I try never turns out It's like I need time to figure these things out But there's always someone there going Hey Mike: You know we've been noticing you've been having a lot of problems lately. You know, maybe you should get away and maybe you should talk about it, maybe you'll feel a lot better And I go: No it's okay, you know I'll figure it out, just leave me alone I'll figure it out. You know I'll just work by myself. And they go: Well you know if you want to talk about it I'll be here you know and you'll probably feel a lot better if you talk about it. And I go: No I don't want to I'm okay, I'll figure it out myself and they just keep bugging me and they just keep bugging me and it builds up inside and it builds up inside. So you're gonna be institutionalized You'll come out brainwashed with bloodshot eyes You won't have any say They'll brainwash you until you see their way. MIKE! And I go: What, what's the matter And she goes: What's the matter with you? I go: There's nothing-wrong mom. And she goes: Don't tell me that, you're on drugs! And I go: No mom I'm not on drugs I'm okay, I was just thinking you know, why don't you get me a pepsi. And she goes: NO you're on drugs! I go: Mom I'm okay, I'm just thinking. She goes: No you're not thinking, you're on drugs! Normal people don't act that way! I go: Mom just give me a Pepsi please All I want is a Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me All I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me. Just a Pepsi. They give you a white shirt with long sleeves Tied around you're back, you're treated like thieves Drug you up because they're lazy It's too much work to help a crazy I'm not crazy - institutionalized You're the one who's crazy - institutionalized You're driving me crazy - institutionalized They stuck me in an institution Said it was the only solution To give me the needed professional help To protect me from the enemy, myself I was sitting in my room and my mom and my dad came in and they pulled up a chair and they sat down, they go: Mike, we need to talk to you And I go: Okay what's the matter They go: Me and your mom have been noticing lately that you've been having a lot of problems, You've been going off for no reason and we're afraid you're gonna hurt somebody, We're afraid you're gonna hurt yourself. So we decided that it would be in your interest if we put you somewhere Where you could get the help that you need. And I go: Wait, what do you mean, what are you talking about, we decided!? My best interest?! How can you know what's my best interest is? How can you say what my best interest is? What are you trying to say, I'm crazy? When I went to your schools, I went to your churches, I went to your institutional learning facilities?! So how can you say I'm crazy. They say they're gonna fix my brain Alleviate my suffering and my pain But by the time they fix my head Mentally I'll be dead I'm not crazy - institutionalized You're the one who's crazy - institutionalized You're driving me crazy - institutionalized They stuck me in an institution Said it was the only solution To give me the needed professional help To protect me from the enemy, myself It doesn't matter I'll probably get hit by a car anyway. grumpy 02-19-2007, 09:43 AM Mike Muir rocks ! donoghue 02-22-2007, 11:52 PM "Drug you up because they're lazy It's too much work to help a crazy" "They say they're gonna fix my brain Alleviate my suffering and my pain But by the time they fix my head Mentally I'll be dead" TONEPUB 02-23-2007, 11:35 AM Being an audio reviewer, you would think I would get enough of this stuff! Zinker 03-02-2007, 11:14 PM Came for the info, stay cause you all put up with my silly questions...... Thanks,   Manitoulin 03-02-2007, 11:23 PM A lucky link from a web search pointed me here, and I have been a proud member ever since. rlwagoner 03-06-2007, 03:48 PM I stumbled on the site quite by accident. And I have been rewarded 1,000 times fold! Although I do not get the opportunity to view or post very often, I do spend the time I do have browsing the various forums for varied and general information. I like the "Live Chat" only because it's "new" technology to me (yeah, I'm a little behind) and I can get rapid response to a problem or question I may have. I can't think of any real criticism of the site nor of any of the members. Everyone has been most kind and gracious. My biggest fault is that I am not technical, not even a little, and I am becomming more and more uncomfortable investing in this type of equipment and not being able to have it repaired. So, I'm currently at a crossroad as to keep "collecting" or go into a holding pattern until I can get over this hump. jimmy666 03-06-2007, 04:46 PM i came here for knowledge in the first place. but stayed for the enjoyemnt of the people and well knowledge Cpt_Kaos 04-16-2009, 07:40 AM I have put together 5 or six fairly impressive (by hillbilly standards) systems over the last 30 years and thought I knew something till I came here. I like it here because the people make me think. This is where the tricks of the trade (hobby) hang out. People here actually do know something. Most important, it's fun! I just wish I had more time. dokblues 04-24-2009, 12:00 AM I originally came here for Information and knowledge. And I have stayed because. This is The Best Audio Site on the Web!! And the natives are friendly too. :D Captain Scary 04-24-2009, 12:05 AM We're all here cause were not all there..................... m4rz 04-24-2009, 12:22 AM I searched out AK when I was told that I had to use a "budget" when trying to build a 2 channel listening system. Just so happens that I stayed here. Everyone I have met here is non-judgemental when I ask questions and there is such a plethora of information. I don't normally join forums, actually this was my first and only, so to me it really proves how good the people make AK. MarkAnderson 04-24-2009, 01:11 AM Honestly, I don't remember why I came here.....and I sure as hell don't know why I've stayed. I mean, "people" like Justen hang out here... Wolverine 04-24-2009, 06:16 AM May I suggest an "All of the Above" selection to the poll. I first came here looking for info on some thrift store piece I picked up along the way and have stayed because of the people. So many people here have so much more technical knowledge than I have and are so giving of it and their time. Thanks again to everyone in the AK community for everything over the past couple of years!! |
