View Full Version : I took a chance on a Teac A-6600 Reel to Reel

I picked up this Teac TC-6600 auto-reverse deck at the Salvation Army store for 29.99. It was an impulse purchase. Cosmetically this deck is very nice, however, It does not seem to work. The deck powers up. When I hit play I hear a click, the reel looks like it is trying to spin, but it doesn't. Fast forward works, but the brake does not engage when I hit stop.
Is there anything simple I should check? If not, is the deck worth repairing, or should I just part it out?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Is the pinch roller moving up to the capstan? If not, the grease on the pivot has hardened.

hi fellow Ak'ers; I myself once had a Teac A-6600....and i learned a LOT from two technicians when i went into Portland to find out why it would try to play but was so d***** erratic....answer! this machine has several highly sensitive sensors to verify correct tape speed and tape tension..and those circuits fail after age....also, if the pinch rollers are not in really good shape, and almost identical, it wont play....this is a dual capstan three motor machine... if the tape tension against the rollers is not precise it wont play. Mine would play but constantly disengage the pinch roller then play a bit further...then disengage again,, in play and record....after lots of research and visits to tekkies..i gave it up for parts to another Teac fan....its very complicated and has several delicate tape sensors in it..all of which MUST be correctly adjusted and working properly or the A-6600 will NOT play. One drive motor powers both capstans via belt. .... dc motors....finicky operation....hard to work on....good luck...
blooeyz Give me an A-6300, 4300SX or 7010GSL instead.,

Thank you for the replies blooeyz & Nakdoc.
Here is what I found out so far. I took the backoff and found the capstan belt had fallen off. I put it back on only to have it fall off again after 10 or 15 seconds. Is it still possible to find a belt?

Teac is great for parts. Contact them. I would get the servive manual as well. These decks are complicated.
The belt has nothing to do with the brakes not functioning. You need to measure the voltage going to the brake solenoids.

I just had to replace the capsten belt on my A-6600. Teac no longer carries the part (marked as discontinued when you call them). A couple of Teac sites here in the US also did not seem to carry the belt. It must be an odd size used only by this model.
I was able to order a replacement from Kawashima Audio Service in Japan. Ordered on Monday and had it in my hands on Thursday. Cost was about $30. Their website is http://www.openreel.net/index_e.html Highly recommended!

Surprised at that. Teac still has belts for the 2300, 3300, 4300, 5300, 6100/6300 series.

unclebort, like the old saying, you get what you pay for.I would just use it for parts.I realize your post was about 4 years ago.Unless you know a great tech that can repair it at a reasonable price. On the other hand, from time to time, they have all kinds of decks on Ebay. The great ones to me are the Teac A4010S,SL and the GSL,A6300,and the X10R.There are some great A6600's on Ebay from time to time. Also, all kinds of belts and manuals can be found on Ebay where as you couldn't find them elsewhere.I've found all I need at Ebay.Al
