Funny,

I spent a few hours in a Quincy (Mass) Goodwill, and walked out with a nice stack of excellent condition classical vinyl for $2 a pop- no one buys the classical- the clerks told me- thank lordy, and (very) good for me.

Later in the month, I spent time in a Cambridge (Mass) Goodwill, only to be bombarded and assaulted the hour I was there, and only turning up tons of scratched "Red Seal" vinyl, and other once delightful rarities, all beat and scratched to heck, and just one singular unscathed copy of "the Nutcracker"... and even then, I left it, too frustrated to deal with the store lines, the situation there with the beastly folk.

Well, I was back there today, only to find, to my delight, a decent haul of near-perfect vinyl resently stocked, and priced nice- .50 cents per record. I got a bunch of sealed classical duplicates, they'll be up for grabs at the east coast AK get-together I'm hosting.

Thank god, in a way, I guess, for the popularity of MP3s, and fans of Chingy, Paul Wall, and Bubba Sparxxx...

Oh, and a girl overheard my hunt for that "Nutcracker" record I left behind- she turned it over short-order to me- it was placed out of reach for me.

Happy holidays!!!

It's always a joy to come home with some good vinyl. Glad you had some good hunting. My last few trips have been pitiful other than the .99 CD's (they had way too many and needed me to take some) The vinyl on the other hand has been the same stack I have looked through the last 4 visits.

Although it's been a while (and now that my mother-in-law has moved to the other [MIT] side of town), I used to enjoy my trips to Stereo Jack's in Cambridge on Mass Ave (back when she lived on Arlington Street). Not only did I pick up vinyl, but I was able to fulfill my needs for ol' shellac Victors for my two Victrolas (one upright and one "trench" portable--both vintage WWI).

Is Stereo Jack's still there?

Oh...and nice going Deli!

Every now & then, I go through a serious sweep of classical LPs at GW/SA. There are, in general, tons of unraided classical LPs. If Symphonies are your game, there's plenty to go 'round. Good stuff is not hard to find for pennies on the dollar.

Cheers Paul!

Every time I meet someone into that type of music, I make sure and ask if their lame-o parents have any useless stacks of those "record things" laying around. Then I find out if they are unemployed and need a few bucks to go get the new Ludacris CD.

I get a lot of good vinyl that way.

Now this is a curious thread. I don't think I will ever get deep enough into it to have a full appreciation of this type of music. But there are some Composers such as Bach, Beethoven, an Mozart that I do occasionally listen to. I see many of these at the thrift, but from my knowledge of labels, most of what I see that would be worth buying for monetary gain, as well as listening, is shot. If I found anything on a foreign label, or something from the 40's, or 50's I might buy it. But it is always shot.
