For me, if I see ABC-The Lexicon of Love at a garage sale I buy it. Have 3 now.

Is there something you buy because you just can't pass it up?

How many of the same do you have? (this thread closely parodies the "how many of the same" hardware thread going on in another forum in here.)

No, but several have multiplied when I wasn't looking. I have three copies of Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull, which as fate would have it is one of my favorite albums. I also have three copies of Soft Parade by the Doors, which as fate... oh, you already heard that rap. I have two GORGEOUS covers of Morrison Hotel, which is one of the best albums ever.

I'm at work so I'm guessing but I'd say I have about six or seven copies of "Highway 61 Revisited" by Bob Dylan. Can't seem to get enough of that one. Some are U.S. copies, some are British. I believe a couple of them are DCC Gold Discs. All sound good to me!

Who's Next
Over the years, I've had 4 or 5 LP copies (all US Decca and MCA) and 3 different CD versions (the original US reissue, the remastered/expanded US version, and the Canadian midline Steve Hoffman reissue).

Someday, maybe a vintage UK vinyl...

It is the single best R&R album of all time, IMNSHO, so I don't consider this extravagant.

There are 2 albums, I can't seem to get enough of...

1. Frampton Comes Alive. (8 copies)
2. Gary Wright - Dream Weaver (6 copies)

..and for some reason, unknown to me, I have 6 copies of Asia - Alpha.

If I see a copy of "After Bathing at Baxters", or "The Late, Great Townes Van Zandt", I'll probably get it.

The Rolling Stones' "Aftermath." I have the DECCA LP in Stereo and the London LP in MONO. I have it on CD, too. BTW, the DECCA Stereo LP is the best version.

Only two AJA's at my house: original MCA and MoFi half-speed. Both are very, very good.

I'd buy a mint copy of Throbbing Gristle's LP entitled "Sacrifice" - not to be confused with the double LP "Thee Psychick Sacrifice".

Throw in another copy of the compilation "Ohrensausen" on white vinyl.

Uhh, I'll take another copy of the 7" by Leather Nun entitled "A Slow Death".

I will take another copy of Flora Purim's "Stories To Tell".

Off the top of my head, these are what I'd want. But this is a loaded question because if I really think about it, there are several 100 LPs I'd love to have a 2nd copy of!

Not really. I still do, but it's because I forgot I already had it. Very rarely, I will buy the remaster of something if the album is sufficiently important to me and/or if I distinctly remember that my copy sounds bad.

I just bought my first copy of Lexicon of Love -- went straight to the deluxe edition.

Too many first copies of albums I need to get.

For some reason, I had 4 mint-ish -- minty :-) -- copies of 52nd Street. No idea why: I assume three of them were dump finds, since my wife had one when we got married and I could think of no reason to acquire another copy involving the exchange of actual money.

We're down to three copies now.

I guess I'm a slappy for Brubeck's "Time Out", I've got several copies already and most have issues somewhere, but hey the LPS are over 40 aren't they???
Maybe I'll make that clean tape of them someday.........

Actually, I have quite a few doubles/triples. Since they usually are around a buck or so, I just snag them if they look clean and hope it's an upgrade over my current copy.

Not really but if I see a mint copy of Tull's Thick As A Brick I'd probably buy it despite having 4 lp copies and 3 cd copies. The original Reprise that I have is nice but I'm always hopeful for something just a little better. I've always enjoyed Tull (I have roughly 100 ceedees and 50-60 lps) but the lp artwork for Thick As A Brick is very unique and to my knowledge has never been replicated like that again. The stories within are clever and humerous. The whole album is jibe at the pretentiousness of progressive music during that time. A classic even if you don't like the album or the band for that matter.

Cheers

I always pick up LPs in garage sales. If like them and they're in good shape, I buy them. For years, starting in the 80's, I collected anything by Glenn Gould (I know, classical). The interest was threefold: he recorded hundreds, they are usually well recorded, and they are relatively rare. Hardly any in garage sales, mostly in used record stores, but now these stores have practically disappeared (in Montreal). I remember flying to Santa Fe in 1989 for a two day trip and walking out of a used record store with 15 Goulds. The trip was for business, but the highlight was the LPs. Now with Ebay, collecting them is too easy. I could find all the missing ones in less than 6 months, but why bother.

Well, as you can tell from my name and avatar, I'm a Rush nut. :nutz:

I'm 29, and got into them when I was 14, and they have been my favorite group the whole time. :D I have seen them live every chance I have had (5 times now and hopefully 6 in the spring/summer/fall of '07, if they tour again with their new album) as they are just phenomenal live, the best act I've ever seen by far.

So being that I got into them and music seriously around 1991 when I was 14, I really missed the record and tape era and started my "serious" collection of music with cd's.

I bought all the original, un-remastered Rush cd's in high-school (as this was before they even started to remaster their albums). And then, later on, when they came out with remastered versions of their albums starting in the late 90's that now covers all of their catalogue up until '96, I bought all of those as well. :D

So I now have all of their catalogue to date of 18 studio albums, 6 live albums, and 5 compilation albums, as well as 2nd copies of the 16 studio and 3 live albums that have been remastered (everything pre-'96). I basically have 2 copies of every Rush album up until '96: the un-remastered and the remastered versions (as well as 3 DVD concert sets, shirts, posters, tour books, key chains, bumperstickers, pins...etc). :p:

I have also picked up serval used records of their albums that I found in a place called Vintage Vinyl, but as I have no record player (or even a tape player!), I haven't really listened to them. :(

But I just joined this site to help remedy that, as well as to get a moderately priced vintage receiver (I've long wanted one, I had a friend in highschool/college who built his own speakers and raved about them), to replace my 14 year old entry level Kenwood  as I have recently gotten a little inheritance and so have some money to spend in order to get a decent stereo now. (And I bet the warm sound of Exit Stage Left would sound awesome with a vintage receiver!) :D

So I'm looking forward to finding out more about all things vintage stereo! :thmbsp:

Are you talking about the girl you can see a tiny bit of her panties? I don't think looking at the photo carefully that she is actually holding the skirt up it is the lenght of the skirt and the angle of the camera that reviels the panties.

I basically have 2 copies of every Rush album up until '96: the un-remastered and the remastered versions...Hey, I've been wondering -- is there a significant difference? There's another forum (sh!) that are really against remastering of older CD's...many of them believe that one can obtain significant improvement just by EQ'ing the older CD.

Oh, and welcome to the forums. Rush is one of my favourite bands, too. Definitely in my top 10, and if you look at my favourite artists, none of the others that I like more qualify as a "rock and roll band", so they're probably my favourite rock and roll band.

Well thanks, good to be here, and good to meet another fellow Rush fan! I hope to learn a lot about receivers and stereos in general, as I am really painfully ignorant of them (I don't really know what ohms do, for instance) :saywhat: and have just a basic stereo consisting of a Kenwood KR-A5040 receiver that is about 14 years old, some JBL E50's I just got for 1/2 the suggested retail price online, and a 10 year old or so Pioneer PD-F1007 301 disc cd player.

So saying that, I am no audiophile and so I really have no expert opinion on if the remasters sound better than the originals. But my non-expert opinion is HELL YES! :D To me there is so much more depth, texture, nuance, subtly, clarity, and just loudness to the remastered Rush cd's (Presto, for instance, is so much louder and has more of a bottom end) that I don't even listen to my original ones anymore, even the ones that came out in the mid-90's, and just keep them for nostalgia, and, well, because they're Rush cd's!

So I would say they are a worthwhile purchase, especially since you are a big fan as I am. Put it this way: Rush has been known for a long time for their recording expertise and awesome sound of their albums (with a few mistakes here and there, Vapor Trails, for instance :sigh:), so take that already great sound and enhance it, and that is what the remasters sound like. :thmbsp:

So I have a question for you now: does Rush sound good on vintage stereos? (I'm assuming you have one). I'm a little worried that their somewhat cold and clear sound (on some of their albums like in the 80's), won't transfer so well into the warm sound of an older receiver, or that it won't play them as loud as I would want (and Rush is meant for playing LOUD!). :D

Anyway, perhaps I'll see you at the next Rush concert, be looking for a new album from them in Spring! :D

So I have a question for you now: does Rush sound good on vintage stereos? Of course, they do: they're Rush.

Seriously: I've only gotten into "audiophilia" within the last 6 years or so, and've only gotten into vintage...well, I've been into vintage since vintage wasn't vintage...but I've only recently (like within the last year) gotten "back" into vintage, and haven't really settled on a system yet. My SX-5590 needs work, and I'm waiting until January to take care of that. And I'm only just getting my main speakers in the next couple days -- I'm not a collector like some of these guys, although I do have a couple different pairs of speakers.

So, short answer: couldn't tell you.

PS Louder doesn't mean better. You should compare them at the same listening levels. Specifically, sometimes louder means more compressed, which is bad. Although I don't agree with everything that is said on that other forum, that is one thing I do agree with: too much compression is a bad thing. I have a mix of Rush CD's -- some are the new remaster, some are the older master. So I don't have any one particular one to compare them on.

And yes, I've seen them a few times. They were my second ever rock concert. And still see them, although I skipped the last tour. I wish they would play all of La Villa Strangiato again.

Good point.

I have compared them at the same volume levels, and the remaster's are always louder, as well as clearer, more textured, more depth...etc. I don't know how I could tell if they were more compressed or not, but given that I feel they have more nuance and subtly than the original cd's, I would guess they're not.

And they were my first ever rock concert (Counterparts tour when I was 16), and I hardly have seen any other bands live as I know they can't compare to Rush (I've never heard another band's live album sound as good as a Rush live album), and because there just aren't many good bands to see anymore anyways; I missed out on the 70's and 80's great band and great concert era. :sigh:

Did you see them on the Vapor Trails tour? They played all of Strangiato on that one, and it is the best version I've heard, live or studio, imo--Alex just goes nuts, and the sound is so loud and clear. I'm still waiting to hear The Camera Eye live.
