I'm setting up a dedicated 30 gig MP3 machine and was wondering what search/download engine you use. More important do you like it and would you recommend it? At present, I'm using WinMX v3.22 and it has really been kick ass.

Kazaa Lite, Kazaa without the spyware is what the Lite version is, it works better and faster than all of them, better than the old Napster, also very easy interface to use.

Yep Kazaa Lite for me too ... just make sure you don't get the nasty worm-infested full version though.

I believe Kazaa is amongst the largest P2P networks around at present.

WinMx, here, too:beer: Haven't trie the Kazaa.:dunno: I've managed to, in just a short time, find about a Gig of blues and R&B stuff.:guitar:

I even found live versions of "don't Bogart That Joint", and "APolitical Blues" to complete Little Feat's "Waiting for Columbus" CD. Also the studio version of "Fat Man in The Bathtub", nissing from the "Dixie Chicken" CD. Um.........can you tell I'm a 'Feat fan?:yippy:

I'm tempted to download the Kazaa just to compare it with WinMx. If I do, I'l report back with my $.02:nerd:

Meanwhile, I have a good batch of tunes to start with. I have a gazillion CD-R's to fill, so here goes.....................

:D Happy Listening:cool:

Where can I find a copy of Kazaa lite? I found something called diet kaza as an add-on but no individual program. I am in a little of a rush so I didn't search too hard. This shows promise as for some reason WinMX isn't working real well right now (firewall is acting up).

Folks,

Pshaw. Spend a month in the USENET newsgroups. With the old @Home speedy service, I was downloading over a gig per day. That's like a whole album every two minutes. Burned onto hundreds of CDR's (over 400), by rough estimate I'd say I've got around 300 gigabytes of MP3 files.

You don't have much control over what you'll find, but over a few months, it's hard to say that you couldn't find something you wanted. And (especially so if you've got speed), browsing through USENET groups sure helped me find a bunch of cool stuff I really didn't even know existed.

I played with Napster just a little bit, but it was pretty painful compared to the speed I could swallow MP3's via USENET. I probably never downloaded as much as one CDR-full of stuff from Napster or any of the newer stuff....

Anyway, works for me. Worth checking out. If you don't have a decent newsreader (and Outlook Express isn't a decent newsreader), head over here and get Gravity for free:

Yes thoots but with Kazaa, like napster, you can search by song title, or artist, check and see the size of the file as in if the song is 700kb long than it isn't the whole song, and you can make sure the song you DL is at least 128kbps. With broadband you can DL most songs in under a minute and you can DL like 30 or 40 at a time, of songs you know you want ;) Instead of just trolling and getting whatever.

Did I mention you can DL movies, software, games, and pr0n too ;)

Son,

I've been in the newsgroups since damn near before you were born! :p:

I've downloaded a few things other than MP3 files, that's for sure! :p:

Let's see before Napster there was newsgroups :D
Used them alot before going to WinMX. The cool thing about WinMX is you can download the same song from multiple site at the same time. This increases your speed and shortens the download time. Very trick.

Kazaa does the same - it will simultaneously dl the song from multiple sources in order to maximise bandwidth.

At the end of the day the software is pretty similiar, it all comes down to which has the largest community and I believe Kazaa is the largest there.

Kazaa is defunct I believe.

LimeWire is the way to go these days.

Kazaa network traffic is really regulated here on the COX networks. Some days I'm unable to connect, and search results are less than acceptable at times. I snagged Limewire pro. it was worth the money, its fast as hell, has a flexable search, and is just overall kickass.

WinMx and parent company Frontcode Technologies Ltd. died in September when they killed off the central server which held the users' IP addresses, when they were threatened with an RIAA lawsuit. I've switched to Shareaza 2.x with superb results. :thmbsp:

Another vote for Shareaza here. Connects to G2, G1 (same as limewire/bearshare) and edonkey2000 (use razorback 2.0 or 2.1 servers!) for great results. Also shareaza has security filters you can get from the shareaza forums that block known spyware/virus/fakes and make searching easier. Add peerguardian2 for blocking more nasty stuff. Of course bittorrent rules all for speed if you find what you are looking for.

For kazaa, i stay away from that network as something like 96% of the riaa lawsuits are from the kazaa network.
