View Full Version : I would do anything for love, but I won't do that........ jeffn 11-24-2006, 12:41 AM What was MeatLoaf talking about with those lyrics? I hate to think.............:whip: VinylHanger 11-24-2006, 01:16 AM Those lyrics are an inside joke with my wife and me.I say they mean that he will do anything for her except lie, she says it makes no sense, then I say I took poetry in college so I have an idea what it means. She gives me a dirty look and I slink off into the corner. starkiller 11-24-2006, 02:07 AM no idea, and the video for that song is pretty strange too...but, just got done listening to bat out of hell on the ar-9's and am pretty worn out :D jonman 11-24-2006, 02:32 AM Donate all his vintage stereo stuff to Goodwill and buy a Bose Wave? luvvinvinyl 11-24-2006, 07:30 AM I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That) And I would do anything for love, I'd run right into hell and back I would do anything for love, I'll never lie to you and that's a fact But I'll never forget the way you feel right now, oh no, no way And I would do anything for love, but I won't do that, I won't do that Anything for love, oh I would do anything for love I would do anything for love, but I won't do that, oh I won't do that Some days it don't come easy, and some days it don't come hard Some days it don't come at all, and these are the days that never end Some nights you're breathing fire, and some nights you're carved in ice Some nights you're like nothing I've ever seen before or will again Maybe I'm crazy, but it's crazy and it's true I know you can save me, no one else can save me now but you As long as the planets are turning, as long as the stars are burning As long as your dreams are coming true, you better believe it That I would do anything for love, and I'll be there til the final act I would do anything for love, and I'll take a vow and seal a pact But I'll never forgive myself if we don't go all the way tonight And I would do anything for love, oh I would do anything for love Oh I would do anything for love, but I won't do that, no I won't do that I would do anything for love, anything you've been dreaming of But I just won't do that (repeats 3x) (Solo) Some days I pray for silence, and somedays I pray for soul Some days I just pray to the God of Sex and Drums and Rock 'N Roll Some nights I lose the feeling, and some nights I lose control Some nights I just lose it all when I watch you dance and the thunder rolls Maybe I'm lonely and that's all I'm qualified to be There's just one and only, the one and only promise I can keep As long as the wheels are turning, as long as the fires are burning As long as your prayers are coming true, you better believe it That I would do anything for love, and you know it's true and that's a fact I would do anything for love, and there'll never be no turning back But I'll never do it better than I do it with you, so long, so long And I would do anything for love, oh I would do anything for love I would do anything for love, but I won't do that, no no no I won't do that I would do anything for love, anything you've been dreaming of But I just won't do that (repeats 7x) But I'll never stop dreaming of you every night of my life, no way And I would do anything for love, oh I would do anything for love I would do anything for love, but I won't do that, no I won't do that [Girl:] Will you raise me up, will you help me down? Will you get me right out of this Godforsaken town? Will you make it all a little less cold? [Boy:] I can do that! I can do that! [Girl:] Will you hold me sacred? Will you hold me tight? Can you colorize my life, I'm so sick of black and white? Can you make it all a little less old? [Boy:] I can do that! Oh oh, now I can do that! [Girl:] Will you make me some magic, with your own two hands? Can you build an emerald city with these grains of sand? Can you give me something I can take home? [Boy:] I can do that! Oh oh now, I can do that! [Girl:] Will you cater to every fantasy I got? Will ya hose me down with holy water, if I get too hot? Will you take me places I've never known? [Boy:] I can do that! Oh oh now, I can do that! [Girl:] After a while you'll forget everything It was a brief interlude and a midsummer night's fling And you'll see that it's time to move on [Boy:] I won't do that! No I won't do that! [Girl:] I know the territory, I've been around It'll all turn to dust and we'll all fall down And sooner or later, you'll be screwing around [Boy:] I won't do that! No I won't do that! Anything for love, oh I would do anything for love I would do anything for love, but I won't do that, no I won't do that tentoze 11-24-2006, 07:37 AM Ernie- as a reward for that post, please ban yourself for a week. Anybody else got a mental image of Ernie dressed up as Meat Loaf, belting out that tune? :D Sandy G 11-24-2006, 08:35 AM I never could decide if I liked Meat loaf or not. On one hand, there was the thing that he was most assuredly NOT a rock'n'roll prettyboy, he was from Texas, IIRC, & not disco, at that dreadful era when most everything was. On the other hand, there was something kinda "Eeeeuuwww !" about the whole schtick... ozmoid 11-24-2006, 09:21 AM Anybody else got a mental image of Ernie dressed up as Meat Loaf, belting out that tune? :D No. Absolutely not. :nono: I don't have an image of him doing the "Alice's Restaurant (http://audiokarma.org/forums/showpost.php?p=900181&postcount=16)" cover photo shoot, either. jaymanaa 11-24-2006, 09:35 AM I never could decide if I liked Meat loaf or not. I'd rather drink poison than hear that one song again.:thumbsdn: Definately Eeeeeeeuuuuuuuwwwwww! luvvinvinyl 11-24-2006, 06:34 PM Then I guess I have your understanding, when I tell you that my wife's current musical playlist consists of Barry Manilow and Meatloaf, both in heavy rotation. Sure explains a lot, doesn't it? ozmoid 11-24-2006, 10:25 PM Then I guess I have your understanding, when I tell you that my wife's current musical playlist consists of Barry Manilow and Meatloaf, both in heavy rotation. I'm assuming that's an accurate representation of the real thing? :scratch2: tentoze 11-24-2006, 10:27 PM Then I guess I have your understanding, when I tell you that my wife's current musical playlist consists of Barry Manilow and Meatloaf, both in heavy rotation. Sure explains a lot, doesn't it? She's a hell of a nice lady, Ern, but I'd be divorced in a Windsor minute.... Mark W. 11-24-2006, 10:36 PM STOP is the answer your looking for he would do anything for love BUT STOP And you guys are whimps my stuck in the head image of Meatloaf is him and Tim Curry In "Rocky Horror Picture Show" which the wife just bought on DVD and we watched the other day. OH MY WOULD I HAVE LIKED TO HAVE Susan Sarandon in 1975 when she was just a babe of 29 of course her boobs wer smaller then! howed that happen. Sandy G 11-24-2006, 10:42 PM Sing Along w/Mitch..."Michael Rennie was ill The Day The Earth Stood Still..." Woops, wrong thread !....<grin> That song would have been even more awesome if Meatloaf had sung it... rulerboyz 11-24-2006, 10:43 PM I'm certain that Tentoze will be disappointed to hear that Jim Steinman got shot down when he originally suggested that this song should be 15 minutes long. Perhaps if we read the lyrics that got cut from the song, it might help solve the "But I won't do that" puzzle. Well here goes nothing: "I'll never forget the way you feel right now ..." "I'll never forgive myself if we don't go all the way tonight ..." "I'll never do it better than I do it with you ..." "I'll never stop dreaming of you every night of my life ..." Jimmy always said, "You know what? Nobody's gonna get it." And he was right. -- Meat Loaf Jim Steinman, in an interview, states that the definition of "that" is fully revealed in the song in each of the several verses in which it is mentioned. He intended the "that" reference to be a "puzzle" which would be ambiguous at first, but which could be solved by attentive listening to the lyrics. Filmboydoug 11-25-2006, 01:59 AM he would do anything for love BUT STOP Oh. I thought he was talking about an anal tongue dart. fotno 11-25-2006, 05:44 AM Jim Steinman, in an interview, states that the definition of "that" is fully revealed in the song in each of the several verses in which it is mentioned. So that's why I never understood it. jeffn 11-25-2006, 05:50 AM And I would do anything for love, I'd run right into hell and back I would do anything for love, I'll never lie to you and that's a fact But I'll never forget the way you feel right now, oh no, no way And I would do anything for love, but I won't do that, I won't do that Anything for love, oh I would do anything for love I would do anything for love, but I won't do that, oh I won't do that So its obvious he means that he'll "never forget the way you feel right now..... no I won't do that" ok........ I think I liked it more when I thought it was "I'll do anything for love but I won't do :yikes: THAT" luvvinvinyl 11-25-2006, 08:05 AM She's a hell of a nice lady, Ern, but I'd be divorced in a Windsor minute.... She has many other redeeming qualities... ...and I have the Almarro system, at the other end of the house. opt80 11-25-2006, 08:27 AM I thought it meant he'd never go to Sears with her!:scratch2: Alan Dusty Chalk 11-27-2006, 03:38 AM If you watched the Storytellers episode, you would see that this really is a stupid question. The "that" refers to the immediately preceding line in every case. For example, in the line where it says, "...But I'll never forget the way you feel right now, oh no, no way; And I would do anything for love, but I won't do that, I won't do that...", he's saying that he would do anything for love, except forget the way [she] feels right now. And then: But I'll never stop dreaming of you every night of my life, no way And I would do anything for love, oh I would do anything for love I would do anything for love, but I won't do that, no I won't do that. It's this one that makes it particularly hard to figure out: But I'll never forgive myself if we don't go all the way tonight And I would do anything for love, oh I would do anything for love Oh I would do anything for love, but I won't do that, no I won't do that I think that one means that he won't forgive himself for love, but...ugh...it's really awkward English, to say the least. tentoze 11-27-2006, 04:10 AM I'll never forgive him for unleashing it on the world. doctorbongo 11-27-2006, 04:20 AM Jim "meatloaf" brickman may not have been good at brevity or clarity, but he had the market cornered on obtusity, pomposity and longwindedosity. So man words to say absolutely nothing at all ... doodledog 11-28-2006, 01:10 AM If you think Meat Loaf's pompous, try Steinman's solo album, "Bad for Good." Might be the world's first self-reviewing album title. They've actually re-released about half of it as Meat Loaf songs on "Bat 2" and Bat 3." But try to picture Steinman's lyrics with a voice that is, shall we say, somewhat less operatic than Meat Loaf's. Not pretty, but one of those that's so bad it's kinda fun in a dumb way. |
