View Full Version : Johnny Winter
big1daddy 11-24-2006, 10:15 PM Having some beverages and listening to Johnny's "Nothin' but the Blues". I have some of his other stuff also and a LOT of blues. I love his guitar work, but I keep getting hung up on his vocals. After several songs they grate on me like my father-in-law did yesterday at Thanksgiving dinner.
I like him best when he's backing Muddy.

big1daddy 11-24-2006, 10:33 PM I definitely will. thanks!
Tubejunke 11-24-2006, 11:56 PM First I will address the original question. I have never had a problem with Johnny's voice. For the Blues I think it works pretty darn good. There are times I could live without the parts of some songs where he kind of moans or hums the notes he is playing. Kind of a jazz thing I think.
As far as recomendations go I would say the self titled album is great. "Captured Live" is another great one along with "And Live". If you want a challenge try to find one called "The Progressive Blues Experiment". Not very common unless they have released it on CD. SUPERB
If you give a RATS ASS about good old ass kickin, boogie woogie, foot stompin, air guitar prompting, freak flag flyin, speaker pumping, Texas Blues, then you NEED the albums I mentioned in your library.
opt80 11-25-2006, 01:34 AM I have to agree about the vocals but do check out his latest entitled Bluesman.I find his vocal much better here. His other recordings pale in comparison

jonman 11-25-2006, 02:20 AM I think along with his fantastic guitar work he is one of my favorite vocalist in blues and rock. Listen to him and his brother Edgar on Please come home for Christmas. Gives me chills when I hear them working out towards the end

Yep, it's on CD. I got it and it's great!
big1daddy 11-25-2006, 07:51 AM "Progressive Blues Experiment" sounded familiar, so I just looked in my stack of LPs waiting for a bath and a play. Sure enough. I have it. I'll give it a spin tonight.

My favorite Johny Winter LP:thmbsp: Cool guitar on the cover too.
doctorbongo 11-25-2006, 12:47 PM I like everything about Johnny Winter. He's true to the music, his vocal phrasing is great, and his guitar playing is out of this world. His version of "rock 'n' roll hoochie koo," trimmed down and played straight, is still the best, though the hopped up one with Rick Derringer is fun. Oh, and he looks cool, in a bizarre kinda way...
doctorbongo 11-25-2006, 12:54 PM addendum: voice preferences are a strange thing. I have never been able to get beyond Bobby Zimmerman's voice for more than a song or two, but I have no problem listening to several Neil Young albums in a row. Had a sisterinlaw who hated Gordon Lightfoot, and I never quite figured out what she didn't like. I detest when people sing up in their throats and sinuses, like the lead singer for Molly Hatchet. Also not much for the bleaters, the women mostly who sing like sheep: Stevie Nicks leads the flock. I'm figuring some of it has to do with subconscious triggering of memories of voices we don't like, such as your fatherinlaw's. My final vocal sin is emoting. Celine Dion may be able to sing in 7 octaves or whatever it is, but her lack of restraint is notable in all seven. Heard a famous voice coach talking on NPR recently, and she named her fave. Now this is a woman who coaches very popular and even operatic stars. The answer is Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and AudioSlave fame.
Groovey Records 11-25-2006, 12:57 PM I saw johnny a few times back in the day.
First time at the Filmore East white hair flyin pink eyed albino freaked me right the fuck out, he was wailin Rock an ROLLLLLLL at the tope of his lungs. I was trippin my brains out sitting in the front row. His hair started to fall out. Then he starts to singing Highway 61 and goin at IT. This was a trio him and Bass and Drums.
Gawd Damn.
It was years later Johnny and Edger, Rick Derringer and Steve Paul put Blue Sky Records on the map. It was Johnny made sure Muddy was comfertable in his last years and got it down right. Best set of rerecordings of originals by the original Artist I EVER heard.
I live up in the Adirondacks and Johnny is coming to Saranec Lake December 16th I will be there its a small venue and I understand James Mongomery is his back up band.
I love Records but Live is where Rock and Roll Lives

Bongo, Excellent point. I love Neil Young yet find Dylan to be whiney and unlistenable.
LOVE Cornell. With Soundgarder, solo, and especially with Audioslave.

Andyman 11-25-2006, 07:50 PM I like him in small doses, like songs under 5 minutes or so.
Not anything against his music at all, but on the longer cuts, especially live, he just loses my attention. At least that's the way it went when I saw him in the Johnny Winter And power trio days. I've got a few of his LPs though and enjoy them just fine.
And this from a Jerry Garcia fan :lmao:
big1daddy 11-25-2006, 07:54 PM OK kids, I just spun "Progressive Blues Experiment" a couple times in the Rumpus Room and it is amazing. Obviously great guitar, but the vocals are much better to me, one notch down - let's say on 9 instead of 11. I'm not a performer and don't know what I'm talking about, but for me he has a limited vocal range and he can still growl and be real while staying within his limits.
Example: "Drinkin' Blues" from "Nothin' But the Blues" doesn't work for me.
"Tribute to Muddy", Bad Luck & Trouble" and "Help Me" from "Progressive..." DO work for me.
Tubejunke 11-26-2006, 09:23 PM What format do you have "Progressive" on? I have wondered if it was out on CD yet because the LP usually is pricey. I actually have an 8 track that got chewed up real bad once by I loved it so much I painstakingly rewound/repaired the tape by hand. I need a better copy!!
gearhead 11-26-2006, 11:59 PM CD Universe has it on CD.
jimfet 11-27-2006, 09:39 AM Saw Johnny many years ago. I was in high school, in Fayettville NC. He was his brother, Edgars' special guest that nite. Ronnie Montrose was Edgars' guitar player for the band at that time. Very good show. Dan Hartman was his bass player at the time too. He wrote the famous NFL song "instant replay"

I saw him at the Fillmore East too, but before he sang about RnR. The first time I saw him it was strictly the blues. He was the opener for Terry Reid and BB King. Awesome guitar player and not a bad vocalist but as mentioned, his voice can grate on some songs.
BTW, it was Steve Paul who brought him to NYC for the first time at Unganos I think.

Tube,
I picked up the LP over the summer sometime. LP is near mint, but the front cover has ringwear and there are a couple of stains on the back. After seeing the cover, I was very surprised at the condition of the LP. I believe I paid around $12 for it.
Good luck!
Tubejunke 11-28-2006, 09:36 PM Great find! I wish now that I had picked up a good copy for $10 at the annual Hillsville, VA flea market a few years ago. I was trying to be thrifty and rather than get that album I was able to get the rest of the stack that was packed with great stuff, but cheaper. I walked away with a special edition Michael Bloomfield album and a good copy of Canned Heat "Hallelujah" to name a couple. I figured what the hell, I've got the 8 track still. Now I have one of those CD recorders and I have plans of turning a lot of my tape to CD. Some LPs as well to eliminate wear as they become more and more valueable. I still want to JAM them. Got to do something....
The PBE is just harder to find than I suspected at the time...
