View Full Version : Green vinyl?!?
tdst51 11-24-2006, 10:15 PM Hey guys- I just picked up an album today at the local hippie thrift store. It's "Breakfast in America" by Supertramp. I had to go directly to work this evening and haven't been home to play it yet, but it appears to be in pretty good condition, including the album cover. BUT THE VINYL IS GREEN! I've heard people here talk about colored vinyl, but I haven't a clue. Is it something special?  Thanks for any info!!

big1daddy 11-24-2006, 10:18 PM Dave,
I have Audioslave, "Out of Exile" on blue vinyl.
I thought "If it's too loud, you're too old." was a Ted Nugent quote?
Colored vinyl re-releases were quite common in the late 70's. A&M and Capitol really pushed them. I have several on colored vinyl, including one best of the new wave on A&M that looks like swirly blue and clear water. Picture discs were all the rage then too.

Wow, I've never seen that album in green but I'm not a die hard fan. Typically, colored vinyl pressings were limited edition. I sure hope someone more familiar can respond.
Danger Boy 11-24-2006, 10:39 PM I think over the years i've seen just about every color of vinyl at some point. Green, yellow, orange, red i believe are the most common.

big1daddy- When I was a kid back in the 60's in Thousand Oaks, CA, I worked for this guy named Homer Jenkins cleaning up bars, car dealers, etc. and he used to use that phrase. Never forgot the phrase or the man's name...I'm sure it wasn't his original quote, but I thought it went along good with his name.

Tubejunke 11-24-2006, 11:40 PM I think clear would be cool. Anyone ever seen that?
Scorpion8 11-24-2006, 11:46 PM Not clear, but I do have a yellowish-gold clear release of Styx ~ Pieces of Eight.

That's cool. I believe Ted had it on one of his album covers, "Free for All" I think. So I'd say Homer had it before he did. :)
I did a quick web search and didn't find anything.

Have seen clear, blue, red, orange, yellow, swirly, white, grey marble, etc. on both lp's and singles. A&M even laser etched patterns onto two Split Enz records. Color records have been around the entire history of records starting with Edison's Amberol cylinders, some of which were blue and hot pink. In the 50's when RCA was pushing their 45 only players and records, the Red Seal 45's were pressed on transparent red vinyl. Radio stations were often sent colored vinyl promo copies in an effort to capture the programmers attention. For instance, I have a copy of "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane on white vinyl (RCA Victor) and "Reflections" by The Supremes on red vinyl (Motown). My brother has a very rare pre-release of "Abbey Road" by The Beatles that was sent out before the jackets were ready. Came in a plain white sleeve with a note from Apple records, directing the programmer as to which were choice cuts for radio play. It's pressed on very dark green vinyl and "She's So Heavy" is broken into two bands so the DJ can cue a shorter version.
cubastreet 11-26-2006, 04:44 PM Hi, I have nirvana in utero on clear, as well as one of the split enz etched discs. Also a smiths 12" single which is a true single - song on one side and etched picture on the other. white stripes elephant is on 2 discs - 1 red, 1 white. I also have quite a few picture discs which are pretty cool. I remember my brother having an ep picture disc by goat at school that was cut on a piece of vinyl shaped like a goat's skull. All pretty cool, but to me they don't sound as good as black vinyl.
jonman 11-26-2006, 04:57 PM A rare colored Vinyl record to watch for is Elvis Presley-Moody Blue on red vinyl. I have heard it going on Ebay for over four grand

Moody Blue is not a hard LP to find and almost always found in blue vinyl. Anything other than blue is a tough find. In a collection I have been buying from over the last few months one turned up in black and now sits on my shelf. Glad to have it.
Terry
I have a collection of at least 400 LPs. I have every color of the rainbow, including picture discs. Anything you can think of. Go to eBay, go to the records area, and type "colored" or "picture" and see what comes up. They even have shaped vinyl. I have one shaped like a Christmas tree.
redd6054 11-27-2006, 08:22 AM Hi I guess that I'm lucky as I have moody blue in both Blue and Black vinyl. I also have Beatles albums in red, blue,[compilations] white [white album],marble [Srgt Pepper] and gold vinyl [love songs]. I don't play them though as I heard the vinyl is softer, but I don't know how true that is.
cheers Wolfgang
steveb 11-27-2006, 11:49 AM I have a Dave Mason LP that is all different colors in kind of a swirl pattern, don't know if it's rare but it's a nice play.

I think these go for about $35 a copy if in very good shape. I have one also. I also have a red mono record of Nazz's first release.
pmsummer 11-27-2006, 04:02 PM First time I played Dave Mason's "Alone Together" (1969 swirling marble looking disc... on Blue Thumb), I thought I ruined the record because I couldn't see where to put the needle down.
Yeah, there were other reasons, too.
Micropassatman 11-27-2006, 04:46 PM I've got a Japanese Import copy of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper in yellow-orange vinyl. Also have a plethora of Iron Maiden picture-discs, and a white vinyl copy of Dio's Sacred Heart.

Hence, this is why the Red vinyl Elvis-Moody Blue went so high. The blue is the most common followed by the black. THe red was only used in special promo package released in limited numbers before that actual release.

I've still got that LP and still play it frequently. I've always liked Look At You Look At Me a lot.
freddyfender 11-28-2006, 09:26 PM anyone ever see any shaped discs? Rhino put out a bunch 10 or so years ago.
Micropassatman 11-28-2006, 09:27 PM Yes. I have a few Iron Maiden and AC/DC 'shaped' picture discs. The few I have are for singles.

freddyfender 11-28-2006, 09:45 PM leave it to Texas.........
Tubejunke 11-28-2006, 09:46 PM anyone ever see any shaped discs?
Yes round....:D
Sorry!! I had to do it..Just kidding!:thmbsp:
Now there were some cylindrical records in the early days. I have never seen any other "shaped" discs.:scratch2: Seriously!!

Yep. Still a great LP!
Tubejunke 11-28-2006, 09:51 PM The pics of the "shaped" disc came in while I was posting. Even though I see the idea (Texas) I dont see how the thing would play. I am guessing only in the solid center section.
freddyfender 11-28-2006, 09:56 PM oh, i forgot! what about "shaped" cd's? I wish i could get a quick shot of my Ramones/New York Dolls split. The Ramones song is "I don't wanna go down in the basement". any guesses as to the shape?

The grooves are cut for 7" playback (like a 45 rpm), but it's a 33.3 EP.
KB9KXH 11-29-2006, 01:42 AM Not only were records pressed in colored vinyl but also picture disc were pressed.

Ewwww - green! :yuck: Must've gone bad! I can take it off your hands if you like... :D
Great score! Supertramp is awesome! As for the shaped picture discs - I came across a fish head (Barnes and Barnes) picture disc many years back and got it for $2 (I guess its popularity waned after Dr. Demento's show was cancelled on many stations). My kids always liked looking at it (more than hearing it ) and also enjoyed looking at the other colored/multicolored vinyl I have. (:sigh: sorry - no pics as I am over 8,000 miles away from my collection). I even saw my vinyl lovingly hung on my son's wall! Though I must say that I generally don't play the colered stuff much because they are usually duplicates of the stuff I have on black vinyl.

Tubejunke 12-02-2006, 12:54 AM Not only were records pressed in colored vinyl but also picture disc were pressed.
Picture discs are cool.:smoke: I have a Rock Sagas-Led Zeppelin interview picture disc that I bought in Germany back in the 80's. Great shots of Plant on one side and Page on the other.:thmbsp: I wish I knew what mine was worth as I have never seen another for sale, or at all for that matter.:scratch2:
thedelihaus 12-02-2006, 04:10 AM I think clear would be cool. Anyone ever seen that?
I've got a Sonic Youth record in clear. An Odetta record in red. Lots of Cramps records in red, yellow, ect. A few blues records in blue, used to have a yellow Beastie Boys record, and have an Orbit record in Pepto-Bismo pink. Lots of picture discs (Robot Wars, Paul Stanley solo album, ect...).
fun stuff!
SkyLounger 02-05-2007, 09:18 PM The weirdest I have is a 1986 opaque pink vinyl version of the ''Pretty in Pink'' OST. Wonder if it's worth anything?
namahealani 02-05-2007, 09:25 PM The best version of The Beatles White Album you'll ever hear is the UK white vinyl. Be prepared to pay about $100.
If you can't get a 1st UK pressing of Abbey Road then try the green vinyl, sounds very, very good!
ampegdan 02-05-2007, 10:14 PM My daughter collects colored vinyl and at least half of them are Robert Rheims' Organ & Chimes Christmas album. Oy. I have a clear blue copy of the second half of the Capitol Beatles anthology from the 70's (y'know, the one where they took the same hotel balcony pic 7 years apart-what hotel I don't know). Unfortunately for the album (and me) I had it as a 12-yr old and well....you know how good most kids took care of records.
Another odd one I found was the soundtrack to "The Deep" movie, which is blue with a standard Casablanca label.
