View Full Version : Help me put together a system for my son.
I'd like to put a system together for my son. He is turning 15 next summer and really likes to listen to music (like his dad :thmbsp: ) and I'd like to surprise him for his birthday with a McIntosh system (I know, I am :screwy: but he is a great kid, gets excellent grades in school, active in sports and doesn't give me grief, so he deserves it!). He takes great interest in my system and loves to listen to it any chance he gets. We even go and audition different gear together at different stores. He really digs the B&W 800D speakers! First thing he said after listening to them "Dad, I'll buy them FOR YOU, when I graduate from college.... Made me smile, what a generous, selfish-less kid!
While the easiest way would be to just buy new or used modern gear, I thought it would be much more fun for us to do some research together into some vintage or few generations old gear you guys would recommend and hunt around for it. The upcoming McIntosh book would be a mandatory read for him, me too actually. I'll admit, I am not up to speed with the older macs, shame on me! Anyways, what gear would you recommend that is not too vintage, so there won't be any need to do any serious restorations or re-caps involved? Something simple and honest, not too expensive, just the sweet sound of mac with no frills. Thanks for your input!
PS I am saving my 201/275 for my youngest son, who is less patient and likes immediate results but is no less deserving. Wow, I hope I have money left over for their college...:D
Victor 11-30-2006, 07:55 PM I always thought MAC receivers are just plain cool. I came close to buying a MAC4300 for the bedroom, very good tuner. :music: The down side is the last MAC receiver was made 13 years ago, how old is too old?

skippy_ps 11-30-2006, 07:56 PM For a cdp, a 7005 or later. I have 2 7008's and these are nice players although any of the older players may need new belt(s). Not really a big deal to replace them.
C-32/33 and 2205 would be a nice combo. An Mc-2105/2100 would be nice although a C-26/28 (matches the 2105) would be adequate, these are more likely to need work. Or, substitute an MC-2125/2155 for the 2205 for a little smaller amp but still really nice.
The next generations of gear I'm less familiar with and they seem to get less press here. The 7XXX series of amps seem to get a lot of nice reviews although they're 50% more. A lot of nice pre's in the 30 series - take a look at RR's site.
I'm assuming that there isn't going to be a tuner.
The MA-6200 is probably the all-time champ of vintage integrateds so don't overlook it. That or one of the later integrateds teamed up with any of the vintage cdp's would make a great combo.
Sounds like a fun deal. Happy hunting. :music:

Forgot to mention, his current system is a sony cd player with an Onkyo receiver. The Onkyo receiver has a sentimental value attached to it. We were visiting my in-laws recently and I saw this Onkyo receiver sitting in their closet after they moved to a condo. I took it out and my wife says, "My God, that is my old stereo, I used to listen to it when I was your age" she says to my oldest. Long story short, we took it home, I had to take it apart and clean all the contacts, luckily they were just oxidized, we cleaned them together with my son, it didn't need any parts, the receiver works 100%.
We set it up in my sons room and the tunes were "cranking", surprisingly good I must add, my youngest comes into the room and says, "Man, that is soooo old school!" My oldest looks at him and says with pride in his voice, "Mom used to listen to it when she was my age!", the youngest just nodded his head in approval, well if Mom used it, then it must be "cool"! My father in-law is a sentimental kinda guy so he was real happy to see it working again, when he came over one day, brought back a lot of memories I am sure, I think he wiped a tear off his eye.
My son has used it for the past year, it has developed some distortion and is noisy, so I think I will have it repaired some time in the future and store it, to preserve it for my grandkids, then they can say "My Grandma used it". :thmbsp:
skippy_ps 11-30-2006, 08:35 PM Great story about "family gear." My older bother still has the first integrated and tuner (Pioneer) that I bought brand new in 1970 at the China Fleet Club in 1970 in Hong Kong.

I'm assuming that there isn't going to be a tuner.Actually, he does listen to FM quite a bit, he says it sounds more pleasant, he doesn't like the highs from the CDs??? His speakers are kinda crappy so I guess I can't blame him for not liking the tizzy-fizzy highs. He actually spends more time listening to my system when the 275 is in rotation, come to think of it too. Hmmm, could it be he has an early audiophile ear? He does play a little guitar and piano. Maybe tubes would be the way to go?
Victor 11-30-2006, 09:09 PM Maybe tubes would be the way to go?
If tubes are the way to go, how about a DIY kit? Imagine the fun of building a tube setup with your son. Then the look on his face when you turn it on and it actually works.:D
There are many good complete kits to choose from. Many times I have thought of building a tube amp kit just for fun. You could spend some time in the tube or DIY forum, I'm sure they would be glad to help out.
Victor
Victor, although not a bad idea, I actually got them electronic lab kits a while ago, they both enjoyed them tremendously and had fun building the projects. I think he is still a bit young to tackle a DIY tube project (high voltages) which would mean, I would do most of the assembly. Besides, it's about the McIntosh brotherhood, like father like son type of a thing...:thmbsp: I guess I could give him my 275 but that would be too simple no research, no hunting...
wajobu 11-30-2006, 09:17 PM Well "Dad", you could always get me a Mc 4100 :D
Well "Dad", you could always get me a Mc 4100 Oh boy, I always suspected my turbulent youth would one day catch up with me, Ok, I'll see what I can do!:D By the way "son", what is a "Mellotron"?
Murray and Victor, thanks for your input! I will do some research with my son into the gear you mentioned so far. Keep them coming guys, I need some time in advance of his birthday to hunt this stuff down.

Fathers often underestimate sons. I bet he could do more of the project that you think. When I was 13 I attempeted my first stereo circuit mod, soldering and all. I will admit it did not work but that is a different story.
Most of the tube DIY kits are not much more complex than electronic lab kits, the difference is soldering. From the reviews I have seen of many of these kits they usually are 2 day projects for someone motivated. Check out the article on building the phono preamp kit on page 8 of issue 2 ToneAudio magazine (banner at bottom of page for ToneAudio). I know you would not be building a phono preamp but the article gives an idea of what is involved in a DIY kit.
It is nice for him to tell everyone "my Mom listened to that when she was my age" imagine him saying "me and my Dad built that". :music:
Sorry if I'm too pushy.:)

Oops I did forget that. High voltages should definitely equal adult supervision.

Before the days of the digital sampler, it was (and still is) a keyboard operated tape orchestra machine...with wonderful samples of strings, choral, flutes and many others...used by the likes of Moody Blues (Knights in White Satin), Beatles (Strawberry Fields), Genesis (Watcher of the Skies), King Crimson (Epitaph), Tangerine Dream (most pre-1978) et al.

Also known as a Chamberlain and Novotron.
Ok, I must be dense or something but I still don't understand what it does! Can you elaborate on the function and use of this thing?

Its my favorite vintage mac cdp.
wajobu 11-30-2006, 09:54 PM It's a keyboard, like an organ or a piano, but instead of internal generated sound from strings it comes from pre-recorded tapes. Each key on a Mellotron activates a tape across a separate playback head and plays a note equivalent on a scale like a piano, but instead of a pure tone it plays a chorus of male voices, an ensemble of flutes, horns, strings or whatever tapes are loaded at the time. Usually a Mellotron had two or three different tape effects loaded at once.
I think, IMHO, the most effective user of a Mellotron was the keyboard player of Genesis, Tony Banks. His skillful use of this instrument along with a Hammond B3 organ and other early Moog synthesizers produced a unique "wall of sound".
Gettin' warmer?

I hope to own one...someday!
I would prefer to buy the gear from either members on this forum or a store like Audio Classics. The advantage of buying from a store is that you can audition it before buying which is fun in itself and if not, I would be dealing with the awesome members of this forum not some stranger from ebay.
Wajobu, thanks for the explanation, fascinating stuff, you learn something new everyday! :thmbsp:
wajobu 11-30-2006, 10:05 PM Agreed...have had good experiences here buying AND selling...now let's buy some McIntosh gear! :D

I sure wouldnt be afraid to buy from that guy--100% positive and its $1.5K cheaper than the one on audioclassics.
vincentinvasion 11-30-2006, 10:14 PM I use to run an MC250 and MX112 with kimber interconnects and cables ran to B&W matrix 804's and for the price that vintage equipment was hard to beat. Any decent cd player will do. I found the vintage solid state to be less troublesome. I do recall those Matrix 804's sounding really good with that MC250.
skippy_ps 11-30-2006, 11:29 PM An MC-240 would make a realitively inexpensive but super tube amp but I wonder if that would be long-term as interesting as a more powerful ss amp, especially for a teen. I was surprised that your son seemed to be more interested in your 275 than the pair of ss amps. Just speculating here, I'm sure that you'll make the right decision, not matter which way you go.
OTOH, a tube amp would be somewhat more educational as the works are right there - pt, opt's, pre-tubes and pwr tubes. Well, maybe.
I'm not sure where you're located but don't forget about checking in with Terry for vintage and somewhat more modern Mc gear. Take a peek at what's available at his web site.
Oh. An MR-73 would make a great "starter" tuner. There's a few updates that Terry does to these with great results (I have one). AM too.
Murray
mike175gr 11-30-2006, 11:56 PM I don't know what you really want to spend, or how old or new you want to go, but I really like the MAC1900 that I bought for my spare bedroom. I had Terry go through it and it is really a nice unit. It has a great tuner section and a lot of power to spare for relatively small speakers. You coul eget a used pair of Klipsch forte or heresy speakers, and he will be able to really have some nice sound!
CarlV 11-30-2006, 11:58 PM Since this would be a bedroom system (?) I would think a receiver may suit the situation best, a 4100 makes a lot of sense to me. In essence a MA6200
with a MR78 tuner built in is hard to beat in sound and performance overall while keeping in to a single unit size. The older cd players are all priced about the same so I would go with a MCD7008 or MCD7009 as they have 20 bit chips, earlier ones are 16.
MCD 7009 has 20 bit and 3 beam lasar, but a single play unlike the MCD7008 which is a changer.(me likey changer :))
That would be my suggestion. Nice fun topic!
Carl
A receiver would be a very good solution, like I mentioned FM is important to him and it would help to keep the cost down so we can get better speakers. Maybe I'll pick up Victors XLS320's for him, wouldn't that be a wonderful combo? Which receiver would have blue meters for him to be hypnotized by?
skippy_ps 12-01-2006, 12:48 AM Carl's kybrd aim must have been off a little when he posited that the 4100 has an MR-78 tuner in it. I think it's either the 75 or 74. Or something but it isn't the 78.
None of the receivers have meters although the 4100 has led indicators for power - more lit means more juice.
Only the later integrateds have meters which would still be cool.
MA-6500 that I nabbed off, umm, the internet.
Murray
cfoster 12-01-2006, 03:36 AM I would go with a MAC 1900 receiver as they are available at reasonable cost and I think, sound wonderful. For speakers, you might want to consider AR 4X. Like the 1900, a lot of bang for the buck. Any McIntosh Cd player except the 7000, due to the lack of repair parts. Finally get him a good TT and get hin into lp's. Maybe a Thorens TD 160, 165, 145 etc. Again, available at reasonable cost.
Everything I have suggested, I already own so I have first hand knowledge about sound and cost; since I am a collector on a budget.
If you have an audio dealer near you that sells pre-owned McIntosh, you and your son could go shopping together. Now that would be great quality time spent together, since he already tags along with you when you are shopping for yourself. When I was his age and just getting into this, I had to go it alone and then lug the stuff home on the bus. Though I will admit that when I made a major purchase, he did drive me to Allied, though he had no interest in what I was buying.
Best of luck on your quest.
Clyde
CarlV 12-01-2006, 09:04 AM Carl's kybrd aim must have been off a little when he posited that the 4100 has an MR-78 tuner in it. I think it's either the 75 or 74. Or something but it isn't the 78.
Yep, MR75.
Carl
elling 12-01-2006, 09:27 AM Where are you located? Would a father and son trip to Audio Classics or Terry DeWick be possible? This would allow your son to see the alternative pieces of equipment, and provide you and your son some quality time pursuing a joint interest.
Terry is a little too far to drive to, I am in Pa. Audio Classics would be a nice 3 hr drive.
CruzBay 12-01-2006, 06:56 PM The C-33 and 34v had built in amplifiers. The amps were sweet sounding, put out 20 watts/ch and had power guard protection. This was often overlooked, although it made them essentially low powered integrated amplifiers. A pair of efficient speakers would stave off the inevitable power amp purchase.
An MR-77 with one of those would be a good starting point. In the future, a 2200 or 2205 could be added.
For a CD player, the MCD-7007 is a great unit, the 7005 is close.
Buy him a Shadow Gallery CD, their first is my fav.
Mike
Thanks for your input so far guys! What are some of the websites that would have pics and descriptions of vintage/older mac gear?

Also I got a chance to listen to a MA6200 and it was great. :music: I would love to get a MA6200 for my bedroom, it would be great for your sons system.
Victor
elling 12-03-2006, 02:34 PM I'll second the opinion that the MA6200 is a very nice sounding integrated amplifier. Since you mentioned that your son likes FM, I'll suggest considering a 4300 receiver. Going the 4300 route would have two advantages. First, you are getting some economies from having the integrated amplifier (the 4300 basically has the MA6200 amplifier section) and tuner in one chassis. Second, you get remote control with the 4300 but not with the MA6200. Based on experience with my 18 year old son, I'd recommend sticking with remote controlled equipment --- not having remote control is culture shock for teenagers.
My son finally has a McIntosh system. :thmbsp:
I've mentioned that he loved my 275 and he enjoyed listening to it the most, I figured, why not? Let him have some fun with it, I don't use it as often in my second system anymore along with the MCD201. Problem was with speaker selection. Floor standing speakers would be a poor choice for his room as they would have to be really close to the wall. Bookshelf speakers were in order for his room augmented with a small sub. I choose the Onix Reference 0.5s. I've heard many good things about them but have not heard them in person. I figured for $300, I'll take a chance. The speakers really surprised me, for $300, quality rosewood veneer and a solid cabinet that is virtually free of any vibrations that I could feel or hear. Excellent speaker for the money. :thmbsp:
After only 2 hours of hammering them with my favorite break-in CD, "Dis is Da Drum" by Herbie Hancock, they really opened up and lost their congested, nasal quality they had straight out of the box. I don't know if it's all that subterranean bass on that CD or what but I have had great success breaking speakers in a great hurry with it .
Ok, so the system is MCD201/MC275MKIV and Onix 0.5s. I hook it up with my son, we leave the system on for 2 hours on repeat with Herbie at very healthy level, I give it another listen, tweak the toe in and the distance from the wall, the speakers are sitting on his dresser and he goes into his room for a listen. He emerges 2 hours later and says, "Is there a name for this sickness", I say "what" exactly? He says that he was totally absorbed by music and could not get enough of it. Staring at the tube glow and the green "McIntosh" letters on the MCD201 had him transfixed and mesmerized. He loves it!!! Hah, "McIntitis" has set in at an early age. ;) I just hope he doesn't develop the love for the blue meters and expects me to give up my 501s any time soon.

Hey Serge, why not?
This is a good reason for you to start thinking about the MC1201's + SF Amati Anniversario's or Stradivari Homage and/or maybe even the MC2Kw Reference system.
Well, I would and hope my kids would just give me the excuse. BUT .... there is still this naggy thingy called budget ... and I sure wish and hope lady luck would bring me the truckload of cash for this to happen, ...........
And of course, like Howie puts it, we have a NEW member, Serge Jr, to give his constructive views.
Cheers!

Does he like Bathory? No Carl, I am the one who is lucky. He listens to contemporary and classic Jazz and classic Rock as well as some modern rock. Stuff that I actually like and don't mind hearing throughout the house. His favorite are Rippingtons and Led Zep. Had it been 50 cent or Eminem, his door would be bolted shut. :D

sounds like youve done a good job- my daughter is 7 years younger and has been trained to disrespect rap and lesser forms of music, if you can call it music, but isnt as keen on the jazz as I would like... some of the classical is growing on her though, thanks to her awesome music teacher at school and her recorder practice ( yes I can tolerate her practicing !)

To complete the system, his dream believe it or not is to get a turntable but we would also need a preamp with phono and a small musical sub. I would definitely go with REL- they win everything in the UK when it comes to subs- their smallest/inexpensive line is the quakes. I have a paradigm PS 1000 which slams real good for movies but is not musical at all...

I always liked my MA6200 integrated amp. I see them come up for sale from time to time on the gon and ebay. And maybe the boys at Audio Classics get them from time to time. That and a pair of Magnepan MG1.6s or older KEF Reference series would be sweet. I know you're a Sonus Faber fan, maybe some older Concerto's or Concertino's?
I agree about RELs being musical, I've heard the Studio III, bass down to 9Hz, :yikes: and the B series, also very nice and integrates very well but never the smaller guys. I'll have to look around for one.
Thanks for the suggestions Salm, you must have missed my post on page 3. The system is already in place. Now just need Rega P2, a preamp and a small sub.

Excellent! Looks like a great system and it sounds as if it certainly has him hooked so far.
