View Full Version : Teac A-4010s
Howdy,
I just picked up at a thrift store an immaculate looking TEAC A-4010S. Excellent wood case, it plays, FF, Rew and hopefully Records. The VU meters need some work, the lights come on and they move but they don't seem to be very sensitive to the tape? dunno.
anyway, i'm juiced about it and can't wait to get it all cleand up and purty looking. Anyone know specifics about this model?

thanks...i've sent you my email. I appreciate the manual very much.
there was another gentleman looking at it when I walked into the place, he thought it was broke but he didn't have a tape to spool up. lucky me, I found one.

A Plan:
Clean & Demagnitixe the heads...
Lube the pinch roller mechanism...
Lube the motors.... Follow the manual...
Probably get a new belt for $ 15.00 or so from theteacman@earthlink.net

I got a couple of parts machines if you are looking for something specific. I need to clean out some of that stuff.

"The VU meters need some work, the lights come on and they move but they don't seem to be very sensitive to the tape?"
------------------------
On playback, the meters respond to the range of the playback adjustment knob on the right; the higher the pb level, the more movement from the VU meters.

yes, that works somewhat but they still are "slow" might be that is just the way it is for older vu's? don't know. one certainly only reads half the value of the other.
thanks for all the insights

Take a very close, very critical look at the heads. Worn heads will reduce the audio output.
Symptom-wise, you'll get good deflection on the meters in RECORD mode, but get weak response in PLAY mode.
Most 4010S's that have actually been used over the years will have worn/dirty heads. Clean them VERY thoroughly. Then inspect with a small magnifier. Look for deep 1/4"-wide grooves in the REC and the two PB heads, and look for a widening of the gap area. If there is significant deterioration of the heads, it may be to your benefit to move on.

Hi Spok,
This was mentioned in another tape thread closely on the heels of this one, but it bears mentioning again. Dirty or oxidated gain controls can really screw up the baseline response on a lot of these decks. Currently, I have hauled out the pre-amp of a 6010-SL that I'm getting together for someone - two of the dual potentiometers (or rheostats) are flaking out. The Line Input gain control is so fouled - that one channel is completely out 95% of the time. The main gain shows a disparity of 33% between channels - only occassionally popping back for an even read on a Dolby tone.
Oxygen is not your friend in these matters. Here's hoping your heads are well.
