View Full Version : HPM-1500's... advice please
ekmanning5 12-15-2006, 11:50 AM Earlier this fall I purchased a pair of HPM1500 speakers at the local GW. I finally got them back last night from their refoaming odyssey. Got them hooked up in the basement (only room in the house Mrs. Manning will let me crank in) and they sound great! The problem is I only have relatively low wattage receivers to pair them with (sx-737, sx780. sx-3700, etc.). I'd like to stay with either a Pioneer or Yamaha receiver or integrated amp. What should I be looking for? What will do justice to these HPM's. I have a line on an sx-1250, but the price ($500) kind of turns me off. Or am I being unrealistic thinking that's too much for a unit to pair with the speakers? Any and all opinions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
ToTo Man 12-15-2006, 11:58 AM I just scored a SX-1250 for $450 and it's worth every cent in my opinion!
Retro Stereo 12-15-2006, 12:09 PM So, it's either powering your $1000 pair of speakers with a $50 receiver that kicks out 30-50 watts per channel, or, powering them with a $500 - 160 watt per channel receiver. Hmmmm, can you give a couple of days to think about this one..... :scratch2:

Surfacetension 12-15-2006, 03:08 PM If the money for a 1250 scares you a bit ( And yes it's worth all of that) Take a look at the 1050 orSX1080 120 watts and sometimes you can steal one for cheap BUT if I had 1500's I would go with a SX 1250/1050 Or a SA 9900 , I think they would want at least 100WPC , Nice speakers good luck let me know what you get

Personally, that's the way I would go too, but then you're talking $800 to $1000 for both of those beauties.

motorstereo 12-15-2006, 03:39 PM Can be done much cheaper than that. A kenwood rack system c2 and km209 with 200 rms can usually be had on the cheap. Cheaper than a 1250 for sure and that's the combo that made me sell my old sx1250 and not regret it. Separates for some reason seem to command less money than recievers even though they easily trump them in the sound department.
Brudha 12-15-2006, 04:18 PM Do yourself a favor and get a four meter setup (SX-1280) to go with the 4-way speakers....
Tripqzon 12-15-2006, 05:05 PM The 1250 rocks. Get it right now and be done with it. :tresbon:

pustelniakr 12-15-2006, 05:53 PM SPEC-1/4 combo...It'll hurt a bit, but you will be back singing its praises and thanking us profusely
Enjoy,

theblackknight 12-15-2006, 05:55 PM Save up and buy the 1250. It will give you a lifetime of enjoyment.:thmbsp:
TheLordofPain 12-15-2006, 05:57 PM I like my Yamaha stuff but I don't really have much experience. Just saying.
Andyman 12-15-2006, 06:55 PM Are there pre/main outs on those receivers you have? If so, get yourself a power amp in the 100wpc or better range and hook it into the receiver.
averagewhiteman 12-15-2006, 07:18 PM That has been my combo for the last 4 years. I agree with everyone so far....DO IT. You will love it.
In the meantime, buy at least a 100wpc anything, and you can flip it on that auction site when you pull the trigger on the SX-1250.
I also have a 1050 in the rotation, and the difference between the two is minimal in the sound dept.. But the SX-1250 is a once in a generation build. They got everything right. Fully shielded, torroid tranny surrounded by four HUGE caps, wraparound heatsinks, A REAL BEAST with CLASS.
tentoze 12-15-2006, 07:45 PM Please refrain from linking to active auctions in open forums.
theblackknight 12-15-2006, 07:48 PM Sorry. I didnt know we couldnt. Why not?:scratch2:
Im certainly not selling it.
tentoze 12-15-2006, 07:49 PM Dollars & Sense forum is active for all things ebay and more. The rules are posted.
PioneerGuy85 12-15-2006, 10:57 PM I come with advice.
HPM-1500s suck, they are absolutely horrid speakers.
I will collect them for you, free of charge, and dispose of them properly.

motorstereo 12-16-2006, 05:06 AM Gee what a nice guy you are Pioneerguy. I'll bet you'd like to get ahold of my panasonic thrusters to. Sorry they're one of my most cherished possesions; well then again maybe not. Back to the subject there seems to be a lot of votes for the sx1250 to drive those 1500's. I wonder what I overlooked in my former 1250? It had been brought up to spec by a good tech. Maybe I was expecting more from it because of it's sheer size. I'd still recommend going separates over any reciever though. A spec system would be near the top of my list for those guys.

Go for the Sansui :music: G-8000/G-9000 then. You'll finally find that missing piece you've been lacking from the Pioneer......

Yep; I have a g-8000. There was no big let down with that reciever. I know this is a pioneer forum but the 1250 is long gone and pretty much not missed at all. The big g will never ever leave my possesion. Those units will drive those 1500's very nicely indeed
ekmanning5 12-16-2006, 07:45 AM I'd like to thank everyone for the great advice. Mrs. Manning however, settled the issue by bringing in my Christmas present early. A Pioneer SX-1250! This is one wife who DOES understand. Will post a pic and tell the whole story later.
ToTo Man 12-16-2006, 08:08 AM Whoa, what a present!!! :yikes:
You must have a very loving and understanding wife! :thmbsp:
Out of interest, how did she physically acquire it? Its one heavy beast to move about!!!

Back in early November when we discussed Christmas presents I had mentioned how much I'd like to, one day, get one of the BIG Pioneer receivers. Mrs Manning was full of questions and I kind of knew she was on the hunt. One evening two weeks ago she suddenly announced out of the blue that my haphazard manipulation of our schedule had screwed up hers and she needed to go check on a Craigslist item she was interested in. The cat was pretty much out of the bag. Off she went with our 13 yr. old son. She informed me that the deal had fallen through due to damage of whatever it was she had gone to see. I continued to check e-bay and CL religiously and even made a trip to Chicago to check out a couple of stores for that monster we were looking for. She played along even going so far as to bookmark several receivers in her e-bay acct. After reading many posts and a lot of back and forth I said last night that I thought we should definately get a 1250. There was one in CA. and the auction was over in minutes. Well when that one went for about $400 I decided to go for the BIN on another 30 or so miles from here. At that point she felt the game was up. She disappeared next door and 15 min. later walked in (with help from our neighbor's son) with the most knock out present I've ever gotten. Of course it was the one from CL. What a woman.:thmbsp:
88gibson 12-16-2006, 12:06 PM You can't go wrong with that combo! I love my hpm-1500's and my sx-1250's. I'll never part with them! My wife has been very understanding. My gear and my wife are keepers. Sounds like you have a great lady as well!

theblackknight 12-16-2006, 12:09 PM WOW! Thats incredible. Most people that I heard about have wives that hate their audio hoddy.
Tripqzon 12-16-2006, 12:13 PM That's what I call true love. :thmbsp:
CrazyTrain 12-16-2006, 05:55 PM You could pick up a SX-9 rec. which has 125/wpc @.003%THD for cheap price to get you by till you can afford SX-1250
ekmanning5 12-16-2006, 09:45 PM I promised a picture...here it is

motorstereo 12-17-2006, 07:04 AM You sir are a lucky man. I hope santa brings her something nice as she's been a good girl to get you a beauty like that. Merry Christmas indeed.
Texas42 12-18-2006, 05:43 PM I'll be getting my Spec 1/4 combo back from Echowars in a week or so and look forward to hooking them up to my 1500s. I'm surprised how well these speakers sound compared to the multitude of high end speakers I've owned in the past. Pioneer definitely got it right with these, in my opinion...
