I am looking for opinions on which one of these to try? I am currently using the Shure M97, but am wanting something a little more open and detailed. The Shure is nice and smooth, and laid back. It kinda sounds congested at times, I am looking to hear a more cleaned up clearer sound.

Get an Audio Technica AT440ML . That'll really open up the treble.

I don't know much about Grado, but I like the idea of supporting his company. It's out of Brooklyn, I'm thinking possibly Williamsburg area.

That said, before I knew more about Grado, I picked up an Audio Technica AT440ML for $130/$140. Great piece of kit.

While not one of your choices, I would suggest you look at the Ortofon Super OM-10 or 20. I prefer the sound of Ortofons on my Dual 1219 (I currently have three available for mounting Super M20FL, FF15XE, and an OM-10). I also have an older Grado equivalent to the Grado Silver or Gold on my Dual CA606 that sounds very nice as well. If you decide to try a Grado, check the post for the Grado hum database as Grados will hum on certain turntables.

I've had both...I like the AT440ML. Tracks better, fuller sound, microline stylus...can't beat it with a stick.

www.lpgear.com usually has the best price on them...good service, I've ordered from them a couple times...

I was under the impression that the 440MLa is even better than the 440ML. It's supposed to have a very wide soundstage, doesn't have the peak between 10-12khz that the 440ML has and it has a more usable, lower output too.

I vote for the Ortofon Super 10 or 20.

The Grados work well . . . but be sensitive to the fact that on tables where there is a strong field around the motor the unshielded Grado cartridge body is susceptible to hum pickup.

Audio-Technica also makes excellent cartridges -- and frankly all three brands have been superb performers these many years.

Now . . . the really important question: What turntable are you using, and with what arm? Often the real question is arm/cartridge/stylus compatibility.

Best,

I have both a Grado gold and an audio technica 440mla, and they both are grate carts, but for the money the 440 wins hands down. It is a realy great cart and you cant go wrong with one.

And let's not forget the Goldring 1012GX - superb little beast! :thmbsp:

That Goldring goes for 2.5-3x as much as a 440MLa or M97xE though. I should hope it's superb.

I also have both, the Grado sound great but my TT does get a bit of the hum, the 440ml is awesome.
