I sent Mike a KT-917 in fair condition. What I got back is probably the best vintage tuner in my little collection; far, far better than it was before.
Sonically, it seems to be almost, but not quite, equal to an Accuphase T-109V, and seems to outperform the 109V on reception. The 109V still seems quieter, and has better bass, and seems more real-sounding on good stations (not that I've got many). The two are fair competitors now, where before Mike's work, the 917 wasn't in the same league.
Compared to a Sansui TU-919, modded by APS, it's got better sound, and better reception, and the TU-919 outperformed the TU-9900, also with APS mods.
Now, the 109V is still my favorite tuner, because it's got a good remote that allows my lazy ass to stay in the chair. But, once I'm on my feet anyway, the KT-917 is a lot more fun to play with.
Bottom line, Mike did a superb job, as always!
