View Full Version : $210M golden-handshake. What Mac gear would you buy?
Number 9 01-04-2007, 12:49 AM (Ex) CEO of Home Depot walked away today with a $210 Million golden handshake (Ridiculous ain't it ... all the starving people in the world ... how can one person be given so much??? I'm gonna boycot Home Depot from hereonin)
If you had all that spare change jiggling in your pockets... what Mac gear would you buy? Would you go all out or be kind of modest?
mike175gr 01-04-2007, 01:26 AM The former CEO of Columbia/HCA was essentially fired a couple of months ago, his total package was added up to just over $1B. The number that the Home depot guy received is paltry in comparison!
Sort of a MAC1900 vs. XRT2000!
rca2000 01-04-2007, 01:31 AM AND am ALWAYS shot down for it. Sure, we all want a lot of money. BUT ..SERIOUSLY....WHO couldn't live FOREVER on 20 mil?? How many cars, boats and vacation houses does one need anyway??
kcollins4 01-04-2007, 01:51 AM The stock price for HD was lower than when he took over!!!! "Honey, I've got good news and bad news. I quit my job, but they paid me 210 million bucks!!"
Arkay 01-04-2007, 02:15 AM Compensation is relative. When a top guy SUCCESSFULLY manages a large company, he is responsible for creating and/or sustaining employment for a lot of people, which translates into families that get fed, housed, educated, entertained, medically treated, transported, etc... He protects and creates wealth, not only for himself but for many others.
He is also tasked with giving good value to people who buy the company's products: the stuff bought from Home Depot improves and enriches the lives of many tens of thousands of people. They wouldn't buy the stuff if it didn't represent good value to them.
All of that is rightfully worth a lot of money. Is it worth $210 million? Well, that may be debated, but it is sure worth a lot more than just the work of a handyman or someone who fixes ONE thing at a time.
:scratch2: Hhhmm...HD's stock price went DOWN during his term, and he still got that much money? Stock price is not always the best indicator of a co. leader's performance, but it is generally one of the better ones, as it represents a lot of other people's opinions of the value of the company. It can be mis-leading because sometimes a good company leader must make decisions that are bad in the short run but good in the longer term, and the market usually doesn't want longer-term returns. It also is affected by other factors affecting the stock market but not necessarily the company in question, but still it is generally indicative and better than most alternative measures. It suggests that in this case, this guy was probably over-paid.
Still, you can't blame the guy for taking it... I would, too, if I were in a position to get it, and so would (probably) 99+% of people. Of course, the measure of whether he "deserves" the money might not only be what he did to earn it, but also be what he does with it, afterwards... that' can be Karma, too.
Getting back to the question: With THAT much money, I would get something simple and modest, much like Masterlu's system with a small dose of additional steroids. :D Why not? As has been pointed out already, you can only listen to one stereo at a time... so why not go for the best one you can, when "money is no object"?
(Ridiculous ain't it ... all the starving people in the world ... how can one person be given so much??? I'm gonna boycot Home Depot from hereonin)
I hope you are saying this in jest.
Anyway, I would get an XRT2K system to use outside for pool side entertainment. Maybe another one for the garage too.

i would pay Ivan to manage my money then when i got rich enough i would buy him out and move in!
Sandy G 01-04-2007, 08:55 AM $210 million ? OK, the gummint's gonna get half of it...but that still leaves you $105 million...I'm 50-almost- I figger I have about 25 years left, I think that would do nicely. Shit, you could give Ivan the $105 million, tell him to invest it as he thinks best, I'm sure he could keep you pretty happy just on the interest...But Ivan, I WOULD wanna come to yr house & play w/yr Goodies every once in a while...if only to expend a little drool...<grin>
jmorgan32 01-04-2007, 11:36 AM I would fly MasterLu to Ohio (first class of course) and pay him by the hour to completely design my HT. (identical to his of course.) All of the gear and furniture would be the same, except for the 6500 in the Master Bathroom. (I could live without that...............maybe..........):music:
Number 9 01-04-2007, 12:01 PM I hope you are saying this in jest.
No I do not jest. I've got two business degrees, and have spent 25 years in business ... Fortune 500 companies and small-startups. As I get older, I have become more opinionated as to what I think is "ethical" in business, specifically public companies. Its something that is sorely lacking.
I guess when I was 21, I would have rationalized it exactly the way Arkay has done above. Makes sense I guess. But now that I am older, I just see it as criminal and unethical, and question the "reality" of the board members of HD to throw away money like that. I have a choice, and frankly, rather do business with a more "ethical" company. I hold no shares in HD, but if I did, I would be livid in throwing away MY money in such a way. Really ... think about it. Just because its going on elsewhere is no excuse IMO. Those who say why not? I guess ... at some point hopefully you will get a conscience.
I'm a bit of a lone wolf in this regard. I'm not anti-business (or a communist) but hate corporate imperialism in "public" companies. If HD was private, well, that's different. Go for it - its your money and not someone else's.

If I did have that kind of coin, I would go for:
A C45 preamp, a pair of MC 275s in mono, an MS300 server hooked up an MDA1000, a Slimdevices Squeezebox hooked up to the MDA too. This would be driving a nice new pair of Klipsch Cornwall IIIs. Duplicate the system in a couple of rooms perhaps.
Ivan's/Masterlu's system is very nice, entirely at another level, but I don't listen to music in such a critical way to justify that kind of performance. But I can sure understand, with someone with different listening priorities, going for that level of performance.
If you had all that spare change jiggling in your pockets... what Mac gear would you buy?If I had that kind of spare change you would find me permanently retired, somewhere on Bora-Bora, snorkeling and scuba diving off my new 40ft Searay. As far as mac gear, my place would probably have either Wison WP8's or B&W 800D's driven by my beloved pair of
501's. As far as the CEO of HD walking away with that kind of compensation, well, the board of directors approved it, what you gonn'a do? Good for him I say. http://www.rssc.com/rss/ships/PAU/PAU%20Destinations%20DL/Bora-Bora.jpg
mike175gr 01-04-2007, 12:57 PM PHC1,
Now that is a great dream!
Number 9 01-04-2007, 12:58 PM Hey, that's from Moto-Tapu island looking out to Bora-Bora! I've been there.
Unfortunately, no electricity on Moto-Tapu ... you would need a long extension cord to hook up the 501s.
Unfortunately, no electricity on Moto-Tapu ... you would need a long extension cord to hook up the 501s.With that kind of dough, I should be able to afford a nice size generator. No TV's, no radios, just music, reading books, boating, snorkeling and relaxing. Of course I would make it a point to visit an "internet caffe" once in a while so I could keep in touch with you guys!
Sandy G 01-04-2007, 01:07 PM I'm a firm believer in the capitalistic system-despite all its obvious drawbacks, IT WORKS-but w/that said, it seems hard to justify some of the compensation packages given these CEOs of outfits that aren't doing so hot. I would think Home Depot could be bumping up against market saturation, at least here in the Southeast-we have at least 7 HD stores within a 2 hour radius-and they could be better spending their resources like re-doing older stores than giving their top Big Dawg a gazillion-buck bye-bye present...
I actually have a love-hate relationship with Home Depot. First, they drove all the local mom and pop hardware stores out of business.:tears: Second, I never seem to be able to escape from there without spending an arm and a leg and get a bunch of stuff that I didn't plan to buy in the first place... Of course the selection and availability of just about anything you may need is awesome. Finding the stuff you came for in the endless isles is another story.
CarlV 01-04-2007, 05:14 PM I saw that on TV news last night. 96,000 per day they said it worked out to. My local one is so bad I go to one further away and it is not too bad. Certainly not convenient though. So they do not see much of my money.
I would certainly be buying a 2 channel dream system with this pittance, no doubt about it! :smoke:
Carl
With that kind of money in the bank, everything becomes one simple statement - "just give me the best there is today", ........
Others work a lifetime and get paid peanuts
While some monkey around and get paid in gold!
Well thats life's story ............. Cant be too envious ...........
Cheers!
Shhhhh, listen .... the numbers for this week's top lottery are ........

Sandy my friend, the capitalistic system died during the Eisenhower administration. What we have now is the Jack system.
Screw you Jack I've got mine:D
