View Full Version : Pioneer P-D70 - Extremely rare auction

There is a P-D70 on eBay. Not very common, but you see them from time to time.

What is rare - no, extremely rare, is that this one has the wired remote control, the JP-521. This is only the second one I have ever seen, and I have one.

And, what makes this even more than extremely rare, is that the auction includes the original box. And, it includes the original owner's manual.

One potential drawback - seller has low number of feedback, but 100%.

Someone is going to be pleased with this auction.

Doc,

Do you have a product brochure scan for that particular model you could post? What was the MSRP in 1984?

Dr. Strangelove

Yes, here is the remote control and the P-D70. Available 1983 to 1985. MSRP: $630

I have no experience with vintage CD players...Are they a good bet? Laser pickups do wear out. Can they be obtained for these units? Do vintage CD players sound as nice as current ones? Are they consistent and reliable, or finicky and sensitive?

Enjoy,
Rich P

Don't know the answers. I can tell you that mine works great, as well as others I have spoken with that have them. Axel probably has more info in this area. The common problem most seem to have is the mean green light over the CD tray doesn't last long. I have replaced mine.

I have had my P-D70 for about two months now and can confirm that it works great. Fantastic lights and a logo that looks like the old Cinerama logo. It is simply lovely to behold.

Memo to Pioneer: Reissue this piece of gear!!!

Problem is, 'cept for getting up to change the stereo and doing 12oz curls I don't get any exercise.

It's a conspiracy, I tells ya! :D

Love the solid drawer, it looks like a nice unit.

Would love to find the wired remote for at least one of the two I own.
Both of mine work great, only one required a new lamp. I have had them for at least 4 years now and still going strong. Sound as good or better than any I have had or others that I own.
Fits so well into any PIONEER silver setup.
Some say that newer players have better DAC's and sound but I will stick by the build quality of the P-D70 until a laser goes or I die which ever comes first.:scratch2:

Could you post a pic of this light?

Dr. Strangelove

The light is on the inside of the tray enclosure, above the center of the tray. It is a small axial lamp, with a green sock over it.

Sorry for the bad photo.

We have two of the PD-70 CD players. Got them both this past summer and there is nothing I don't like about them. Seems to have it all for me, looks, sonics and, so far, dependability.

I could be wrong about this but I thought I read here on AK that our dgwojo (Dave) has a replacement for that green lamp. I need one for one of our machines. Just haven't had the time to write him. Maybe he'll see this thread and let us know.

Yes, the DA503 is 8v/55ma axial leads, I'm out of that one, the closest I have is 8v/100ma, it runs pretty cool so it might be an option? Dave. :scratch2:

That would be cool if you could. The remote was optional, so this would have been a great way to get folks back in the sales room.

Well it's been my belief all along that Silver Pioneer can be credited for high price tags for these P-D70's among other items but I think this thread has just blown this particular auction through the roof. Doc, I think you should get a commission on this one. Thanks for all those super cool scans BTW, I always look forward to seeing what your up to next.

There is a very nice headphone jack right there on the front of the unit, with a volume slider...

It looks like that one needs a little attention to make it work. Probably will not draw much of a price. Could be a deal for someone who knows how to fix it. Or, it may not even be repairable...

Ummm, being an OLD CD player..... isn't it likely that the laser will go kaput some time in the near future and spares will be impossible to find?........

Personally I would avoid them. Most, if not all, of the drawer parts are un-available. Same thing with the lasers. What I can't believe is it went for MORE than my new Marantz "A" rated player. :scratch2:( which sounds better than my old Lux tubed unit, that cost $1500 in 1987 :sigh: )
In my experience, the older players suffer from "digititus", and sound unacceptable, but there are exceptions.

Must be a different one, as Im going to look at it in a few hours. Anything specific I should check for? I plan on bringing a set of headphones and a CD to test it. Just wondering if there is anything else I should be on the lookout for? Looks like a cool player, will fit in nicley in my rig, although I only own about 10 cd's!

I would just make sure it works since parts are hard to come by, if you get there and decide you don't want it for yourself, I'll buy it. I could even use a parts unit too for that matter. Good Luck!

just picked it up. its nice and clean, although not 100% mint. the level slider is broken, looks like an ea y fix. appears to be stuck on the lowest volume setting, as I can hear it playing the cD very faintly. good news is the broken slider wa worth knocking 50 bux off the price! will post up some internal pictures when I take it apart to fix it for anyone interested.

IMO a great CD player. Crack the case and you find it packed with boards and electronics. Possibly some over building seeing that CD technology was new to the public consumer back when. Some say that newer players have better DAC's and I am not here to argue that point. I just feel that the P-D70 can hold its own and sounds damn fine to me! The fact that is was manufactured in 84' yet plays CD-R's is amazing.
The shear weight, looks and performance of the 70 is great. I like em' so much I got two!
Great deal especially if they knocked off $50 WOW!:thmbsp:
Does the green light glow inside your machine?:dunno:

Does the wired remote use a plug in connector on this model?

If it does it would be a pretty simple DIY project to build a infared remote receiver to decode a standard sony remote control to activate the controls on this CD or any wired type remote. My guess would be around $20 in parts + the remote and it would be the size of a cig pack or smaller. Needed would be a matching connector (this might be the hardest component to come up with) for the remote access socket on this player and a service manual showing the pin out connections of the connector.

The magic component is a programmable micro controller chip called a picaxe avalible from an educational firm in England. It comes in several device choice depending on number of I/O pins needed. The development programming software runs on a PC and is free. It is programmed in the basic language and they have build in infared receiver and transmitter subroutines in their features. There are a few domestic sellers of these chips on E-bay and just a few US and Canadian distrubutors.

Here is a link the Picaxe home site for those interested in learning more about this low cost entry in DIY programmable devices.
