Nice amp. How many watts & how much they want for that big dog?

I wish I was rich. :(

I heard this amp w/ McIntosh Speakers (The XLS 360's), and a few minutes later I heard a McIntosh Amp w/ B&W (tHE 802's.. they were the Big B&W's) and I concluded w/o a doubt, The Mc Speakers had the 802's beat. I have listened to Ribbons (Apogee Duettas) for the past 15 yrs, and believe me I have a good fix on how music should sound. It was no contest. B&W are really good Speakers, but I have often wondered why people settle for their lack of bass response when bass is being mixed (in some recordings) down to 16 hz? Anybody heard the same components? If so, what was your conclusion?

The MC275 MKIV will get you within a Db or two of the same place. No cool meters of course!

i have this amp (MC2102) and i truly love it, it is so smooth.. i have a pair of QUAD 988's hooked up to it currently, they are only a few weeks old. the other night i was listen to them (60% volume; Lyle Lovett) when one made this deep popping sound just as a large blue arc of electricity was visible through the front grill. for a split second it was amazing to see then fright engulfed me as it sounded as if the speaker had ripped. after about 20seconds the sound resumed to normal and the speaker plays fine although i am paranoid to turn up the volume. does anyone have an idea of what this was? and will it happen again or what the hell....???

Humm, that was an arc over. I would ask your dealer about it. Beats me.

Do some research on Quads this is what happens when they are driven too hard. Quads are great speakers but when you get to their maxium sound pressure output (which is smaller than conventional box speakers) more power will not make more volume they will arc. When this happens it will burn a small hole in the thin mylar? diaphram which should not hurt the speaker, but you want to keep the arcs to a minium. I have seen older 63s that had close to a hundred burn holes from arcing that still sounded great.

The only thing which could increase the spl output would be more speakers, it was a common thing to get 2 pairs of ESL57s and stack them or you could trade up to the 989s. If it was me i would keep the volume a little lower and just enjoy your great speakers. :D

That is why you should go with martin logan because this cannot happen but both speakers do sound different.

I do not believe arc over is an issue with the new quads. Some are using MC402s with them without arcing. Again, ask your dealer about this.

Ron could be right, my research was on the Quad ESL63 and ESL57 speakers.

i contacted the QUAD rep and he said there are 4 horizontal panels in each 988 and most likely then 2nd one is the problem, so they are looking into it. thanks again everyone.
FYI- i did try the Martin Logan's as mentioned and they are an amazing speaker, but i preferred the sound and aesthetics of the QUAD vintage 988. i am sure i wouldn't have the porblem i have had i picked them up instead..
thanks again everyone

If a Tube amp is 600W @ Ch @ 16 Ohms, does that mean the power is automatically half that at 8 Ohms?

Depends on the design of the amp.

If the 600 watt amp has an 8 ohm tap it should be 600 watts into 8 ohms also.

Ron - are you saying that the watt output remains the same no matter whether you choose 16, 8, or 4 ohm tap? I have always thought there was a decrease or increase depending on the tap. Thanks for the clarification. Also, I've owned a 2102 for about 6 months now - I love this amp, not only the incredible sound it porduces but the aesthetics of the amp itself!
