View Full Version : Anyone ever heard of Audiomagnetics RTR tape?? analog addict 01-12-2007, 11:19 AM Someone trying to sell 7 unopened 1800' reels locally. Never heard of it, but they're only asking $20...Comments? dshoaf 01-12-2007, 12:06 PM I seem to remember those folks as a remarketer of tape from various sources. IIRC, they made a big splash with cassette tapes but broadened their market to the then-dying open reel tape market. They offered excellent margins for dealers to take on the line, if that's any indication. The product itself wasn't all that bad, necessarily, but they had a problem with consistency of quality. The name disappeared rather quickly, too. Hope that helps. Cheers, David OvenMaster 01-12-2007, 12:29 PM I had some of their cassettes at one time. Disposable... so I disposed of them when they shed like crazy. Tom analog addict 01-12-2007, 12:57 PM Suppose I'd rather light a cigar with that $20, among other things.... Thanks! A.A. cableguy2 01-12-2007, 10:53 PM I just can't buy used tape anymore when I can buy new Quantegy tape. It's too much of a risk. goldear 01-12-2007, 11:03 PM I just can't buy used tape anymore when I can buy new Quantegy tape. It's too much of a risk. Ditto. Except substitute Emtec for Quantegy. pioneervato 01-12-2007, 11:12 PM I had a cassette once back in college during the late 70's when they first came out. Pretty good sound and a lot cheaper than Maxell or TDk at the time. I guess they didn't last long in the market. cableguy2 01-13-2007, 12:47 PM Ditto. Except substitute Emtec for Quantegy. Goldear, where do you buy the Emtec? Thanks. goldear 01-13-2007, 01:14 PM Goldear, where do you buy the Emtec? Probrbly tasted better than they sound) Lasted a few years, absorbed into Columbia Records, became their pre-record tape plant.:music:    :thumbsdn: dr*audio 01-14-2007, 10:21 AM Just to clarify, there was another brand, called "Audiotape" mfd by Audio Devices, Inc., that was a pretty decent tape. If you find those on the used market they are worth picking up for $2.00 each. They will make decent recordings and don't shed. About the equivalent of Ampex 641 or Scotch Dynarange tapes. mhardy6647 01-14-2007, 11:35 AM Audiotape was the one I thought of too. From the olden days... http://reel2reeltexas.com/catIndex.html http://reel2reeltexas.com/vinAd58Audiotape2.jpg http://reel2reeltexas.com/vinAd56Audiotape2.jpg dr*audio 01-14-2007, 09:43 PM Thanks, Mark, those ads are cool! One thing I really liked about AudioTape was they had colored reels sometimes, red, blue and yellow. I used to collect them. Ampex had them, too. |
