Any thoughts on the Pioneer Pl 71 Turntable. I most likely will be buying one tomorrow along with a Pioneer SX 650. She want's $50 for the Turntable, and $35 for the receiver. I will offer $65 for both. I am curious about the turntable. I read that the tonearm is not that good? I will make an educated decision when I see the unit, but some input would help. Thanks -Mark-

Mark, if you can get both for $65 more power to you, but I think it's $95 is a steal. The PL-71 is a gorgeous table that has fetched well over $100 in recent sales I've noted. Back in Dec. one sold for $142 on ebay plus shipping. You'll be very pleased with the sound quality, I'm sure. Just be aware that it's fully manual. Curious as to where you read that the arm isn't that good--compared to what? And the SX-650 for $35 is a no brainer IMO.

And don't forget you get a cassette deck of unknown make as a thrown in with the purchase of the table and/or receiver. It doesn't hurt to ask I guess, but you may wind up insulting the seller with your offer so low. Good luck.

I did get everything for $80. I should have asked her if she would take $60. I think she would have. The Cassette Deck is Pioneer. Everything is dusty, and will need to be cleaned. The Turntable's Strobe Glass looks like it fell down inside the housing, otherwise needs just a good cleaning. I don't know if I will keep any of this or not. The Arm on the Turntable does look mediocre to me. We will see. I like the fact it has RCA Jacks, instead of fixed wires. I may keep the Table. But the Tone Arm?

The arm is actually very good, though it is a high mass arm, (why aren't people using these for the MC carts?) these days medium mass is in fashion. The arm was built by Jelco who made the arms for many companys under many names. Of coarse finding out who out-sourced parts for audio gear is like finding out ICBM launch codes.

Okay. Thanks for the info. The Cassette Deck is a CT-F650. Has some kind of heavy plastic and metal cassette with it. Some sort of head cleaner? Everything has really nice cosmetics. This lady was an older professional that lives in the Annapolis area. As long as she got some money for this stuff I doubt she really cared. She said it was a just out of College System. Everybody I have bought stuff from has money, been very friendly, and just wants to get rid of this stuff.

This has turned out to be a very nice Turntable. Cleaned up nicely, and even the cheap emprire cartridge, and needle are in good shape. I do prefer the look of my Luxman, but this is very nice. I don't like how the speed adjustment screws are inside the unit. I kept having to flip the unit over till I had the speed screws set for pitch. But I guess once done, why should it need to be done again. It was spinning very fast when I first tried to set the pitch. It is a very attractive unit, and for what I paid for it, I am very, very pleased.

I just purchased a late '75 PL-71 off Ebay a few weeks ago. This thing is pristine. I love the looks, and it's built like a tank and it fits atop of my '76 1250 like a glove, and of course the woodgrain is a perfect match! At my age I don't need all the bells a whistles of an automatic. Basic functionality and design are the most important things to me in audio equipment. :thmbsp:
