Hey all: My Technics RS-740US quad reel deck finally arrived today. The owner said it didn't move in play, but would fast wind in either direction. Oddly enough, what it actually does is run for a couple seconds, then come to a quick stop. Not a HARD stop, but it takes maybe 1/4 second to roll to a stop, like there's an IC telling it "stop, but carefully." Ideas? This happens in play, rewind AND fast forward. I haven't cracked this thing open just yet. Anyone have a service or owner's manual? I'd like to save it since it's the only Technics quad reel deck I know of. Most people don't even know it exists!

Oh man, I never thought of it, but you're right! It does look like an Akai. The knobs & switches, though, remind me of my Teac A-1250.

The one I have does the same thing, forward for 2-3
seconds then slow stops.I'll read the whole manual
to see if its supposed to do this.same thing in reverse.
the brochure/spec sheet of the RS-741 is really cool.

All right peeps. After waiting for so long, I finally cracked this thing open and it looks like one of the idler wheels is stuck. If you'll look at the pic, the silver pulley is supposed to engage with the idler and make it spin, thus controlling the capstan. But the wheel doesn't move, even when it's disengaged and I try to move it by hand, it's REALLY stuck. Ideas? Getting to the back of the idler is going to be a pain, so any thoughts from the front are appreciated. By the by, I already removed the clip that holds it in place, and that didn't help.

I'd try to blast some spray cleaner into the bearing to see if the bearing grease has just become frozen up or solid. If it won't move at all by hand pressure then look for other possibilities like a brake thats not releasing.
