View Full Version : Question about Sansui 5050 receiver
DogOfDooM 02-02-2007, 11:36 PM Hi all,
As I understand it, the 5050 is quad capable with an adaptor. My question is, what adaptor did Sansui produce to go with this receiver. If I pair the 5050 with a QS 500, will it produce an actual (not synth/matrix) quad signal.
As always, Thanks much.
Russ
jpdylon 02-02-2007, 11:43 PM Nope.
The purpose of the QS series 500/800/a was to provide a separate amplifier just for the rear channels as well as a synth/decoder. The receiver itself does not produce a quad signal. It is the material which you are playing. The QS 500 will decode QS material, but the synthesizer will be used when converting 2 channel stereo to 4 channel.
The QS-500 is a passive device in a way. Connect it as you would an equilizer. Tape out from the 5050 to the input on the QS and output on the QS to the tap input on the 5050. Then when you engage the tape on the 5050, the QS-500 now becomes the volume and balance for all four speakers (front on the 5050, and rear connected to the QS) If the 5050 has the 4ch- adapter in/out you can use that instead. If you want to use a discrete 4 channel device like a r2R or 8 track, then just connect it to the tape input on the QS-500.
If you like what you hear with the QS-500, consider a QS-800a. Better channel separation in the decoder, and beefier amp section
DogOfDooM 02-02-2007, 11:57 PM I understand what you're saying. I'm still a little mixed mixed up.
The 5050 has a switch for "4 Channel Adaptor" on the face, the rear has in/out for left/right "4 Channel Adaptor".
What is the adaptor, and does it run the four speakers?
Sorry if I'm being dense.
Russ
jpdylon 02-03-2007, 12:08 AM you're not being dense, these are good questions.
The QS has a built in amplifier. This serves as the amp for the rear channels only. Your 5050 amp will serve as the amp for the front channels. It also has a decoder to decode QS matrix recordings, and a synthesizer to turn 2 channel signals into 4 channel signals that are fed to all four speakers.
The two work together to make a complete 4 channel system. The QS does not drive all four speakers, just the rears
DogOfDooM 02-06-2007, 11:05 PM Hey Jordan,
Thanks for all the info. Would a 5050 combined with another receiver be Quad capable. For instance, A 4000 with a 5050?
Thanks again.
jpdylon 02-06-2007, 11:11 PM If you were only using discrete sources like a 4 channel R2R. However if you wanted to play anything encoded in CD-4, QS, SQ, RM, etc you would be out of luck.
The adapters were a neat idea for those who didn't want to spend the bucks on a quad receiver, but in the end, its better to just by a sansui QRX receiver than to fiddle with multiple receivers, adapters, etc.

Yeah...I'm goin' for a QRX. I can get a minty 5050 for cheap...I'm gonna get that too and just add it to the collection.
Thanks much!
