Why would you make a move down the food chain of audio? Magnevox 9301s are fun because you can get them for free and make them work for about a Benjamin and convince yourself that it was a good time. They're not great amplifiers and if you're going to spend the dough, use it to move up the food...

Short of buying a full new set of tubes, there aren't any good ways to do this that don't require some measurement. If you can’t perform the measurements, take it to someone who can. Otherwise you'll be left to guess and you'll be leaving performance on the table.

I'd stick to using a preamp as a preamp. The SCA 35 has some out of this world quality output transformers on it. It would be a shame to run them into a load that can't possibly let them show their true stuff. My advice, buy the SCA 35, for the transformers and keep looking for that tube preamp...
