Just given free Akai X-1800SD R2R - now what?

Thanks all! I don't have an 8-Track handy (nor do I have any deoxit) but I did clean the heads. Moving the volume controls around did clear it up a bit, so it might be as many have said: pots and switches just need to be cleaned.

    Klipsch The Fives

I *think* they're supposed to be like (or similar to) the Sixes, but with more HT-friendly connection options. The Sixes only have RCA, Optical, bluetooth, and 3.5mm inputs, and the RCA is switchable between LINE and PHONO. The FIVES seem to add an HDMI to the mix. I have The Sixes in my...

Cannot find replacement stylus, AT MG-35V

Yes, it is actually perfectly straight and of consistent diameter end to end. LPGear offers the same green stylus (above) as the replacement, with the following "upgrades" mentioned also: Upgrade Stylus Options - Higher fidelity stylus: LP Gear ATN12XE - Excellent fidelity stylus: LP Gear...

Anyone using or heard The Sixes and have an Opinion?

I'm happy with what I hear over BT, but have not tried anything on the USB or optical inputs. Some of the reviews I read said the DAC was pretty good.

Anyone using or heard The Sixes and have an Opinion?

I have these, connected to my JVC turntable via a Schiit Mani phono amp. PROS: They look pretty and are extremely loud. Sound is actually quite full (and can be boomy) despite what some of the online reviews say about being too trebly. Plenty of connection options: BT, PHONO / LINE, AUX...

Bitten by the vintage audio bug and now I'm here

I played around with the Mani some more (its only a few days old for me) using a MIDS heavy record (ZZ Top) to try out the different settings. I *thought* I had mine set to 59dB, but it was really set on 48 dB. Tried 42 dB and the mids came back, but 30dB was too thin sounding for me. I did...

Bitten by the vintage audio bug and now I'm here

Actually, mine are quite boomy! I can't imagine any scenario where I would want to add a sub-woofer (like the manual says). I wish they were brighter, honestly. Maybe I'll play with the Schiit some more and see if lowering the gain does anything...

    Minimalist System...Speakers size...Exposure Integrated

I have just pretty much taken the same path after spending much time working with new / old receivers and new / old speaker combos. I've been ragging my brother about his turntable + powered monitors setup for over a year now, only to conclude that (for me at least) it might be the best option...

Bitten by the vintage audio bug and now I'm here

I'd be interested in your opinion of this setup... I just replaced a vintage amp and pair of Polk Rti bookshelf speakers with a Schiit Mani + Klipsch Sixes -all hooked up to my JVC VL8 TT, so almost an identical setup. The JVC has a Hana SH cartridge (high output moving coil). Schiit is set...

Huh? Questioning cartridge recommendations for my JVC VL-8

I have no doubt that it would cost me thousands to match it's capabilities AND aesthetic qualities. Very happy with my JVC.

    Best MC cartridges under $900

I'll throw in a vote for the Hana (though mine is the SH or high output one). It's got great mid-range and bass and sounds great with just about everything from classical to metal. At $600-$700 (ask around ;)), you'd save a couple of bills as well. This cart was recommended to me *over*...

What makes a good phono stage (on an integrated receiver)

I guess I should have called the thread: "Disappointed that vintage Tandberg was beaten by $249 Sony receiver from Sears." I had it in my mind that the vintage amp would "win" (it still might after proper service).

What makes a good phono stage (on an integrated receiver)

En anglais: I don't have a sound lab so should just let my ears pick what's "best" Thanks for the input!!

What makes a good phono stage (on an integrated receiver)

In another thread reviewing a Hana SH cart I just bought for my turntable, I had to stop my review because the Tandberg receiver that my TT was hooked up to overheated and automatically shut down. Subsequent attempts to "try again" would result in (near) overheating, even at moderate volume...
