    Roadside finds

Well I'm not in the habit of hunting for roadside treasure but I'm not about to drive by some and not at least stop to look. Driving in the falls Saturday with the GF on the way to the casino when I spot a set of speakers at the end of someones driveway. Quick inspection to assess the condition...

    Marantz pre/main jumpers?

Need a set of pre/main jumpers for a 2226. Anybody know where I might easily locate a set? Or is there a simple substitute available? TIA Mike

3 Grammys for Plant and Krauss

Just have to say I was so happy to see Robert Plant and Allison Krauss win 3 Grammys last night. It gives me hope that todays music isn't all about rap and hip hop and top 40 radio. Some of the collaborations you see at the Grammy Awards show really are fabulous. However sticking Stevie Wonder...

    Xindak cables?

Anybody had a chance to audition speaker cables from Xindak? They show up regularly on that auction site we all know and love. My real wish is for a set of Nordost blue ribbons but I can't justify the cost no matter how nice they sound in my rig. A fully terminated 8' set of pretty cool looking...

    Remote contolled stepped attenuator

Any of you DIY gurus have an opinion on a nice relatively inexpensive ( less than $200) remote controlled stepped attenuator. I'm getting lazier and lazier in my old age and really want to add remote volume control to my custom built tube preamp. How involved might it be to install one of these...

    Deja Vu....Vandy 1C's

Quick background story. My online audio journey began more than 6 yrs ago with a post inquiring whether I outta make a trip to pick up a set of Dahlquist DQ-10's and the rest is history. Been a junkie ever since. I'm asking the same thing today. I've always loved the look and overall sound of...

Quick heads up for anyone in Niagara Region

The Electronic Depot on Lundys Lane in N.Falls is unloading their Arcam DV-78 DVD players for $299 CDN. Unbelievable deal for Arcam quality. As a CD spinner it's untouchable by anything under $1,000 and probably a bunch more. For those who don't know Arcam is a small British firm who make all...

    ClassIX amp and pre..pic

It's been a long time since I've posted any photos of my rig so here's a quickie. Custom made by a local friend. Pre features touch sensitive switching and is also tubed. Amp is self biasing and makes about 25 watts per. Mike

    Yamaha YSP-800 SCORE

Went shopping for a TV stand for my plasma set yesterday cause the wifey hated it wall mounted. Well lo and behold, sitting on the shelf we liked at the store was a Yamaha YSP-800 digital surround bar. 23 seperate drivers all with their own amplifiers and built in DTS and Dolby surround...

    Almarro K303A...pic

Since I have my custom amp and pre on display at a local store I figured he might as well audition my speakers too. He tends to live on a steady diet of Totems and IIRC he has the Arro's at home. Nothing wrong with those speakers but he wanted to hear just what 2 4" fullrange drivers can...

    Decware HDT...pic

Fellow AK'er Rick( Shelby1420) finally completed these Decware HDT speakers. They feature a modified Fostex FE206EM driver with a phase plug. Extremely efficient at 96dB/1w/1m 8ohms. Also feature 2 passive radiators. Me, BigErik and Rick got a chance to audition these for about an hour.

    Monitor Audio Platinum PL100's

I don't know if any other AK'ers have had a chance to hear the new Platinum series from British speaker maker Monitor Audio but later today I'll get a chance to audition a set of their bookshelf sized PL100's. Unbelievably beautiful from what I've seen in the brochures and for nearly $12,000...

    Rogers LS6 bookshelfs...need value

I need an AK'er with an Orion Bluebook to hunt down the value of a set of Rogers LS6 bookshelfs. These are circa mid to late 80's. TIA Mike

    Maggies and tubes? Bad Idea?

I really really want to try out a set of Magnepan SMGa's. Anyway, I can snag a rare set ( Mocha and bronze finish) and am itching to get them. I know these are rated at 86dB/w/m at 4 ohms. My intention is to drive them with a PP EL34 based amp with roughly 30 watts per channel. Is this doable...

    Anyone tried these phono pres?

I'm on the hunt for a nice but not stupidly expensive phono pre. I would prefer tube but might end up settling for SS. I checked out the link for phonopreamps.com My question is does anyone have any experience good or bad with their TOTL phono pre ( $73 USD) My table is a relatively new...

    Pic of new preamp

Finally got to snap a pic of my new preamp. As mentioned in my previous thread it took me a loooooong time to get this made to match my custom made amplifier. Still haven't taken it home yet, that'll be sometime this week. Anyway, without further ado, here she is. Ignore the dust on top...

Good things come to those who wait?

I think maybe I should reintroduce myself. So many more members have joined since I was a very regular visitor and contributor at AK. I was one of the very first Ak'ers back in the infancy days here. IIRC I was member #6 and spent way too many hrs surfing AK before other hobbies got in the way...

    Need to locate a headshell...

Hey fellas, I'm itching to listen to some of my vinyl again and just happen to have a Yammy YP-800 collecting dust in my basement. What headshell can I put on this puppy? Any suggestions for a cartridge would be handy too. I don't want to spend a fortune but I'd like it to sound nice. Mike

This is more fun than watching...

Link to a great time waster and much more fun than actually watching 22 grown men chase 1 ball all over a huge field and rarely scoring any goals. BTW I wish Zidane or Matarazzi would admit what it was he said to make him lose his marbles. Anyway here's the link.. Game Mike

The Sopranos semi sucked this season

Easily my favourite show on TV, but for some reason I found this last season disappointing. Perhaps it was the lack of violence or something but I kept waiting for something "big" to occur and was left wanting. 2 episodes of Tony in a coma didn't help things either. Luckily the new season starts...

Just how "bad" is Chinese iron?

I ask this question due to a little tete a tete with my friend and tube amp builder extrodonaire(sp) Now he's always built my stuff relatively cheaply but nowhere near as cheap as much of the stuff I routinely see on Ebay. So I asked him what is the deal with those Chinese amps? I know he buys...

    Windows Genuine Advantage?

    Wife friendly rig.... 2 imgs

Thanks to Rick for the armoire but now my wifey hid my gear inside it. I actually do like the fact you can close the doors and keep the little fingers away from the gear. I decided to audition my DIY speakers for a while, parked on some Target stands. Mike

    Question re: 6C33C output tube

I have one question related to that 6C33C output tube used in the Almarro 318A and B. My amp builder tells me there is a finite supply of this tube and no one is manufacturing them anymore. If this is true, what happens when the tube is unobtanium? The reason I ask, is I am trying to persuade...
